The Lizard's Tale 104: The Origin of Anole Species

  • Speciation is the process by which barriers arise between populations that prevent them from inter-breeding. So how do anoles recognize their own species? One way is through the colors and patterns of their distinctive dewlaps. To scientists, this is a clear sign that physical features play an important part in the speciation process - and now, they’re devising experiments to help us understand what drives this crucial part of the evolutionary process.

But what about here in Florida where we have both the invasive Bahaman Anoles and the native green anoles? As far as my understanding is, the Bahaman anoles have decimated most of the indigenous population of green anoles, and I have definitely seen males from both species fight each other. If you go farther up north there are more green ones because I believe they are more cold tolerant. I’m in mid state FL and it is a rarity to see a green anole here, and old timers tell me that there used to be tons of them.

The definition of species is not this simple. Plenty of separate species can hybridize and produce fertile young

You can't just assume they see in color. They might but they could also just see a different shade. There could be so many things. I don't know enough though I'm sure a quick Google search will tell you the truth

If they only fight with their own specie, then why would the one anole that had its dewlap colored to match another specie still fight with that different anole specie? I would think with that experiment, it cancels out the theory that anoles only fight with their own specie.
