    Honestly can't believe I'm watching and learning this for free, this is so valuable for people who are into production, mixing and mastering. I've said this before in a comment but it is truly amazing the work you put into making these videos for people to learn. Also very humble by the artist to give out the stems for people to practice. Everything in this video truly made my day. Keep up the good work!👏

    Like countless other people I wanna join in and thank you for all the videos! It's especially awesome that these lessons apply to pretty much any genre one is producing (I'm mostly doing spacey ambient music, sometimes even electronic rock). Although loudness and compression specifics is a bit different in those genres, the basic ideas are same.
    In a matter of days my mixes and masters have become way more clear and juicy, thanks to your vids! (tho in my case it's often been "putting out fires" as my source files and sounds can be from years ago and are crappy quality, so I'm not dealing with subtleties but rather major ugly frequencies lol)

    Hi Michael.
    Great video. :)
    I have a question that might be a bit unrelated. At the end of the session, when all is done and accepted by the artist you print the final version.
    Your session is in 48kHz 24 bit and you convert it to 44,1kHz 16bit with RX. All fine. Here's my question.
    What is the difference between printing the song at 48kHz from your DAW and using outside program to convert it and just printing the song from your DAW again with 44,1kHz and 16bit ?
    This is one of the things that keeps escaping me. Is there a significant difference or is it just a matter of personal preference?
    Thanks :)

    • @inthemix
      @inthemix  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Mainly just a workflow preference, however, I find some plugins do work better at higher sample rates (even though many deliberately oversample) and that working at 48k can sometimes lead to fewer issues. This is often purely anecdotal and I don’t always have proof of it definitely sounding better than working a whole project at 44.1k.
      After all the processing is done I find that an external SRC and dither is very reliable and easier to control than running distortion plugins at a different sample rate in the session.
      These sort of choices don’t always lead to a better sound but I find they help me create a consistent sound where the artist cannot tell the difference between the 44.1 and the 48 versions (which is the end goal!).
      Sorry for such a long reply, I hope that made sense. If anything is unclear just let me know :)

    • @RudalPL
      @RudalPL 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@inthemix Thank you so much.
      So, basically... It's better to print the final mix and then convert it "outside of the session" to prevent issues that may (or may not ;) ) arise during downsampling with all the plugins running within the session, yes?
      Thanks :)

    I have a problem with mastering. So i have a track where the build has no bass and the drop has and when i try to master it and push the track as loud as i can.. The build ends up louder than the drop. Like the bass in the drop makes the whole drop quieter than the build. So how can i fix that and push the track as loud as it can get while maintaining dynamics to make the drop hit harder and make it louder than the build?

    Love your teachings bro, But something can be confusing sometimes. That is, you done so many tutorials on "Mastering" : some with stock plugins and third parties. There is another one with Ozone and you said you used that because it is what you used to. And other mastering videos, different plugins. Finally, what should i now rely on that is best? Different tutorials with different plugins, which one is best and which Tutorial is more reliable? Or is it that some of those plugins are not quality enough that's why you come up with different teachings with different plugins? Kind of confused... Because I know I don't need all these plugins for just one single song. What Ozone can do, I think Maximus too can. Please help, lost

    • @inthemix
      @inthemix  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for the question. All the videos I have made are still fully reliable and trustworthy. All the things I have taught are still applicable no matter which plugins you use.
      I choose different plugins in each video so that I am not giving the impression that one brand or company is essential. You are correct that the stock and free Maximus plugin is suitable for mastering.
      Another reason for making a few different mastering videos is to use songs in different genres and with clients who wanted different results (super loud vs dynamic. Clipped and distorted vs clean).
      Many videos on TH-cam are only relevant in the few days or weeks after posting, however, I aim to produce videos which are still relevant and useful many years into the future.
      Does that help?

    What about the whole -14lufs thing? Is that have the mix sit at-14lufs FOR mastering or AFTER mastering?? I'm trying to figure out what numbers I need to aim for in general and it's been a journey -.-

    • @missingn.6663
      @missingn.6663 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      -14 is the lowest you should aim for since it’s the loudness of some streaming sites. If you go lower the services will apply their own limiter to match the loudness to other songs. If you go higher they will simply turn your volume down without any sort of limiting, so that’s better.
      I would suggest looking at volume levels of professional tracks of your genre and try to match that.

  • @mbproject704
    @mbproject704 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thank you for the video Michael. I really don't see the point in mastering above -14 lufs if it's going to be turned down. Is there a difference when it's turned down to -14 as compared to mastering at -14? If I turn the dbs down on a loud master will that give me an accurate representation of the sound when the streamers turn it down?

    • @inthemix
      @inthemix  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Marlon. Excellent question! There is a big difference in the sound between mastering at -14LUFS or mastering much louder and having it turned down to -14LUFS average. Sometimes a master will sound better or worse with either approach. Many artists love the dense and energetic sound of a heavily limited master and they actually want to hear thier song with less dynamic range because it sounds like a "record" to them. This is completely okay if the artist wants it.
      I have experience with loud masters being turned down on spotify and also having -14LUFS masters sounding quiet and I've come to the conclusion that you should probably master to -14 average as an absolute minimum and then push it until it sounds best to you. Remember that the -14 is a integrated value over a whole song. It's possible to have a chorus at -10 and still be -14 overall :)

    • @mbproject704
      @mbproject704 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@inthemix Thank you Michael. I feel it could be best to master loud and compress yourself instead of having the streamers compress for you. This way you know how it will sound. Also, I just heard about "equalizer tool" inside the edison in fl. Image line has a short tutorial. It looks like it could give more control of the frequencies. Have you used this tool? and what do you think about it?

    @elzurixmusic 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    This is a super great video but it has left me with so many questions because it's such a different approach to mastering from the last video
    Firstly, if the bass is the problem, shouldn't we reduce it during the mixing process? essentially reducing the bass means changing the frequency content of the song, which is as far as I know something you need to do during the mixing process, and even tho it might be something you can fix, do you really want to change the mixing engineer's vision of the mix? (as for changing the frequency content he was aiming for)
    Second, can't you just link the bass to another channel and add it after the compression? so that the bass won't be a part of the compression and that it'll only affect the instruments.
    Maybe you can use a separate compressor on the sub as well, but considering the fact that usually, the sub-area is consistent, why would it be a problem to the whole mix? it's essentially like adding a consistent signal to the mix, not including the kick.
    Lastly and it's about the limiter itself, I've seen loud tracks that have a ton of bass, while still sounding clear, there has to be a way to achieve it without sacrificing reducing the bass level (and no the tracks were not distorted), maybe they've used just a better and a more transparent compressor, or limiter?
    Despite all of these points, I do know that usually Synthwave tracks like yours tend to have less bass, so it might be the reason why you did that, and if it is it makes total sense, and it was super informative to see that approach to mastering.
    Every walkthrough you make brings in something new to learn, so keep doing these, it's awesome :)

    I have a question, what's the reference file format(quality, bitrate etc) and from where do you source it? Are the levels of the reference track before uploading or after uploading to streaming platforms? Now a days, it's harder to get a high quality reference tracks. And the low quality references are just useless in terms of mastering.

  • @aiyka_music
    @aiyka_music 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Wait so if the track loudness is reaching -6 LUFS and spotify limits down to -14 LUFS isnt it going to sound very different when streaming? What exactly happens to parts of the song that are way above -14 lufs when streaming on spotify ?!

    • @inthemix
      @inthemix  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Spotify doesn’t limit down to -14. Only on some playback systems where the user has selected loudness compensation will some gain reduction be applied. On most systems I tested, this plays back at the full loudness on Spotify.

    Hey man, how do i colour multiple recorded clips on playlist in a way that i get to see the those " coloured clips" in the the channel rack to group them easily before sending them to a muxer track?

    Long time subscriber. Fantastic demonstration! That mix was really well balanced to begin with though. That helped a lot. I hardly ever get mixes like this. Bravo!

    This is incredible. When I have some free time I am super excited to download the stems and practice along. It’ll be extremely valuable to first try and imitate what you’re doing then try and make some adjustments of my own to see what sounds good.

    Hello In the mix I've been following you since I started producing my own songs last March, 2021. Your contents helped me alot understanding the basic mechanism to complex functions. Thank you so much❤

    Not a professional engineer so these help out a LOT and learning all this for free is truly valuable, so a big thanks Micheal! Your efforts are really appreciated. Clo Sur, Solo Ray, Andy Toy and Chris Szczech, great track guys and big up to ye for supplying the stems!
