Music that stands the test of time ... check out The Mary Wallopers version on Jools Holland's Hootenanny 2023 ... although the Bold O'Donaghue appears to have upped sticks from Keady to Dundalk town 🍻
I think this vid is from the International Cafe series which played on Channel 11 WTTW in Chicago. I remember these shows were my first exposure to Irish folk music at the age of 10 and I vowed at that time to marry Tommy Makem and never listened to anything but their music 'til I was grown up. Looking back even now I can see why I fell for Tommy M. He was a flirt AND a sexy as hell singer. Great memories. Thanks for this vid!
Tommy Makem is a marvelous vocalist, and eventually became a consummate showman. In this early video, though, he seems almost shy. Is anyone else seeing that, or is it my imagination?
Hmmm....I wonder. I have what I think is a clear memory of the show. Of course, that was many decades ago. Maybe they were similar shows shown in different parts of the country.
@luciaatherton I think he appeared more reserved than shy....like he was brimming over with good stuff but keeping it hidden 'til the right time. LOL....I always had a great crush on him!
@johndcorr I don't think he was shy, I'm pretty sure he was flirting with every girl in there while he was singing this. You can even see him chatting up a lady at the beginning of the song.
At the first part of this the annoucer who I believe is Don Ferris, says, "Tonight On Festival." Wonder if it's the same show under a different title or what?
You notice Tommy hands his flute to a girll and says "keep it warm"? Then a bit into the song he peeks over at the crowd and tips his head down for a second, and what I'm wondering is: Just where did that girl put that flute to keep it warm? Awesome song.
Tommy Makem exudes charm and confidence in this performance. Class.
He's anything but shy! He's made the song lyrics fit - mentioning his home town of Keady and watch those expressions! he is marvelous!
Nearly 60 years' old and sti the best version. Can't beat the Clancy s and Tommy Makem!!!!
4 people disliked this how could anyone not like this
Perfection! True musicians
god I love the clancy brothers, havent heard this for more then 30 years
My grandad lived this song
My distant cousin Bold O'Donahue was a wild and great man, he was full of bravery, and he was also a great singer
God, they were incredible!

I love Tom Clancy's energy! Tommy Makem seems somewhere between nervous and bored.
Does not look bored to me.
He did seem nervous in his voice when he sang the part “a word or two.”
He seems completely confident to me. He's looks so nonchalant and in control.
That’s just how he performs
Metal Warrior1916 he sings some lines like that in other songs like O’Reilly’s Daughter
love these guys! ...wish i knew where this bar was (haha)

He's having more good craic than the Clancys put together but he's subtle and genuine. The Clancy brothers tend to be far more stagey than our Tommy.
I see it, too. Our Mr. Makem doesn't seem to be having as much fun as the rest of the lads, does he? =/
