    Hi Mr. David...my name is Joshua. My Grandpa was Stan Holloway, he was a really well known bee keeper here in Florida. We lost him last year from Agent Orange from Viet Nam a long time ago. He always took our phones and stuff and made us watch your videos. The things he tried to teach us went pretty much the same as what you do. He said to watch your channel because none of us boys could pay attention to what he was saying. He had hands like old callused ham bones and when one got the back of your head, you paid attention. At least after your head stopped spinning. Anyhow, this year we sent over 2000 boxes to California, we started splits and making queens in February. Just wanted you to know that we all still watch because he told us that when you think you know everything, go back to the beginning and try to learn it all again. Then try to use your head. God gave it to you for something besides a target for me...a lifetime of knowledge that was shared with all. So anyhow, we're still all watching you. Thanks so much...we still keep all his TH-cam stuff...

    My bees came yesterday. I put them into their new home almost at dark. Came home tonight to put the top feeder on. Bees were going strong, even though it began to rain. These are good bees...though, I don't thing they were

    Did a second inspection on 8 frame double deep. Last week saw drone cells and stacked with capped and uncapped brood. Yesterday they are a little noisy and poppin of the frames. Lite smoke or heavy just seemed to make them pist off. Any suggestions? Drones have hatched out. Even saw larvae pulled out of hive by worker.

    I enjoy your videos and I'm very grateful you share so much information. I did my very first split this evening and I'm hopeful all goes well. So I never have been able to find my queen, i see eggs and larva though. So after some neglect and procrastination I checked yesterday and my girls were packed and had three queen cells and one capped! I took the frame with the capped cell and a frame of stores and a frame of brood and just moved them into the nuc. Then gave them 2 empty frames to build. Also I shook a few frames into the nuc (I looked and looked but never spotted my queen). Then moved the nuc about 20 feet and faced it the other direction. Be brutally honest... anything I should have done differently? Anything I need to correct tomorrow?

  • @claytonosborn50
    @claytonosborn50 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    David, why don't you let the new colony with the most bees make the new queen? In other words, why not let the three fames of bees make the new queen? Sure that one frame had a good population on it with new workers emerging, I'm just wondering if you wouldn't get better bigger cells from the larger colony. Also why not flip the new entrance 180 to encourage returning foragers to go into the new smaller colony?

    I’m afraid to split right now because our temps are fluctuating so much. Freezing at night, highs in the mid to high 40’s during the day. Still light snow. How much die off do you have after you open a hive up when it’s colder weather? I seem to get a lot more than normal after opening up a hive to inspect it.

  • @dingeesbees2369

    Why cant you let them re queen themselves instead of introducing a new mated queen? Besides being faster of course.

    • @tifreire1
      @tifreire1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Well the time factor is a pretty big deal if you're trying to make a bunch of splits. If he didn't add the queen eight hours later and just allowed them to make their own it would be over three weeks until a new one started laying and three more weeks until those eggs emerged as bees. Also another frame with eggs, in addition to the frame of capped, brood would be required so they could make a queen. And all that would be for nothing if you didn't end up with a laying queen after three weeks. I make splits like that if I have to and don't have a queen available but adding a laying queen can really improve your odds and you don't lose all that build up time.

    • @HothamsApiary
      @HothamsApiary 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It may be a problem if the split you moved (the one without the queen) didnt have a lot of bees in it. The reason is, the foraging bees will return to their "old" location. You just have to be sure that the split has enough food until they have their own foragers. Hope this helps
