Believe it or not, this tank is actually way better than it used to be. At one point it had only high explosive ammunition unlocked by default when you started playing the tank which had like 7mm of pen and it was too small of an explosive shell to cause any crew damage. You actually had to grind the tank by taking hits and surviving to get xp. Its been buffed such that you get actual shells now and there is a lot more squishy targets at BR1.0 like all the armored cars than there used to be

Thing is french reserves used to be so, so much worse. the APHE they had had so little pen it was unusable. and when it did pen, by some miracle, it had so little filler you might as well have used solid shot.
Don't forget the reload on the hotchkiss and such were about double what it is now. Sooooo painful to play.

France was the tree I started grinding 2nd. I quit playing soon afterwards because "vehichles fundamentally incapable of doing their job" kind of laid bare the rest of the shitty design this game has
the doctrine for this tank was just to waste enemy ammunition.
It's like whoever originally designed the cannon for that tank had no concept of shell velocity at the time. The fact that it can't rip through a BT-5 is impressive considering the BT-5 is made out of paper.
Fun fact: now u have to unlock french tier 2 to start researching this
You know your tank sucks when you need more than 5 shots to kill a Stuart
despite the fact that in Var Thunder the AMX-40 is a bad tank OO in World of Tanks for the enemy it’s a pain
I remember that this tank was able to pen half the tanks you fight, before the shell change. And players new to the tech tree now will have it easier.

I used to play so long with controller, got up to the Tiger IIs, and had an insanely negative k/d, 2 kills per game was joyous. Then I got a keyboard for my xbox, and second game with it I got a nuke, and have refused to go remotely near this game with a controller again.

Well Malzi I would argue the FCM 36 is NOT the worse tank low tier in war thunder since it's turret is trolly and can turn on a dime. The H.35 is WORSE since it has the SAME gun and the WORSE turning system I think in the game. AMC.34 YR has a even worse gun but it's fast and can sorta angle.

I can confirm that FRANCE is the WORST grind 1-2.7 BR. Slow tanks and bad ammo. Farmed all the camos for France and was thinking about quiting the game.

The French tech tree only starts to get better on 5.0
It's wrong. With h39, S35 and D2 I finished the game with on average 7-10 eliminations
The two ARL 44s, the FL11, the AMX M4 etc. are also good tanks and I forget some

I have all the unlockable camo for all French BR1 tanks. It's like playing as a particularly fat infantryman armed with a potato launcher fighting against actual tanks. But I did it all the same.
