  • Goddess Bhadrakali after defeating Mahishasura, in order to calm herself down, descended on the Deviramma Betta (mountain) right next to the popular Baba Budangiri and Mullayanagiri peaks or mountain ranges. After her rage subsided, she came down the mountain, and made a particular place near the foothill as her abode. This place is now a popular shrine for the people of Chikmagalur and other nearby villages.
On the day of Naraka Chathurdasi, nearly a crowd of 1 lakh (hundred thousand) visit the Deviramma Temple at Bindiga village. The temple has an annual event that takes place on Naraka Chathurdasi where the Idol of Goddess Chamundeshwari is taken in a procession to the top of Deviramma Betta, seated there and worshipped by a huge gathering of 1 lakh strong people.
The very next day, the goddess is brought back to the temple for regular worship. It is said that since people would face hardship in traveling 9 km to the top of the hill braving strong rains, walking through forest conditions for worshipping the Goddess on a daily basis, it was decided to construct a temple at the existing place. Though one can find a new temple premises, the actual temple is believed to be 870 years old.
This temple is 21 km from Chikmagalur, 33 km from Kadur, 170 km from Mangalore and 270 km from Bangalore. It is well connected with rail and road transport. If you prefer to fly, please remember Mangalore is the nearest airport. For one's stay, there are plenty of hotels, resorts, homestays etc to suit everyone's budget.
The best season to visit this temple is October to March. June to September this part of the world receives very high rainfall. It receives a staggering 1800 mm rainfall annually. There are many people who come to Chikmagalur and nearby hill stations just for enjoying the rain. The western ghats offer very scenic spots that can change our lives and our thought process.
