      You don't need a flame, you only need a spark from that fire stick and it will light the gas.

    I grew up with Dearborn heaters also, I'm 65 now. There's no reason not to use a Dearborn heater. I think it was all a marketing scheme but HVAC companies to scare people into buying they're super expensive central air units that cost one hell of a lot more money than a Dearborn heater and a couple of window unit air conditioners. There is a little more convenient with the central air unit if you want to spend a heck of a lot more money. We have all learned as we grow up and get older how advertisers manipulate what they tell you and hide the things they don't want you to know just to make you afraid of whatever. I know several people still using their Dearborn because they never ever ever wear out or have all of the problems such as capacitors going bad fan motor is going out Freon leaks and so on and so on that requires an expensive repairman to come to your house and fix. As long as you keep them cleaned up every year before you start them and crack a window just a hair to keep fresh air flowing they will be trouble free for your entire life. And when you have a power outage in the winter you stay toasty warm. There are no hot exterior surfaces on the heater and you can put your hand on top of the heater at any time and it barely even be warm. All heat comes out the lubbers just below the top. This is one of the things that we learn about as little kids at an early age that starts us on our way to adulthood of proper use and what things do or don't do. Kids these days really don't have a clue a big game responsible around machinery and equipment and a very young age.

    Thank you...you showed me the problem with mine. It was getting too much air and stayed tiny blue flames. I closed the vent most of the way and now it's heating up the bricks like it should with an inch orange flame.

      You don't want orange flames. Orange flames will cause black buildup over the heater and can also transfer black soot to your ceiling. Orange flame is a sign that it's not burning correctly and will put out more CO2

    If you could help me out or lead me in the right direction ….. my grandmother recently bought another dearborn heater , similar to yours. But where you open the door on the right and open the small vent to let air flow in ( you losen that flat head screw to let is open) it has a blue flame on it. Not sure of thats something to worry about ?

    • @toxiccat310
      @toxiccat310  หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@cierragonzalez7838 seems like you have a leak or hole in your system. I would run it a while to see if it burns out the gas and goes out. As long as it's a small blue flame it's burning the gas off. It may be getting too much air flow so just open your air flow to a small, maybe to 1/4", opening. It's still contained in the burn chamber but I'd keep an eye on it. Let it heat for an hour or 2 and check it again. Feel the floor under the heater to see if your floor is hot. I'm no professional so if it doesn't feel right, have it checked out. Also you may want to get a cheap plug in carbon monoxide tester for the house. Hope this helps! 🙏

    Hi, I have one of these heaters. Thanks for the video you've taught me a lot already!
    I lit the pilot and the heater, and when I turn the heat off using the white knob, the pilot stays lit. But the pilot will not relight the burner jets. I must relight them by hand.
    Once lit, no problem. I'm in Houston, TX, and we just had the first freeze of the winter. I left the heater on all last night and most of the day. I turned it off when I left the house, but like I said, couldn't relight using the knob -- even though the pilot is lit. I vacuumed the inside as shown in your video. Do you have any ideas?

    • @toxiccat310
      @toxiccat310  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The pilot, most likely, is not hight enough or there is not enough air flow for the pilot to catch the jets to relight. It's not awful, I have to relight mine sometimes also.
      When you relight, do all the holes have fire in them?
      As long as the pilot stays lit with stove jets off it's ok.
      Hope this helps!

      BTW, if it's going to be above 50 I always turn my pilot and gas off, just in case the pilot goes out. I just put extra blankets down for my pets. Better safe than sorry, and they warm up my place in a hurry when I get back home, since I have 4 in my old house!! ❤️

    I just bought three old Dearborns that had been in storage for years. All three are stuck in the "on" position. We tried turning the handles, but they flat will not turn. I don't know if they're corroded to the point they won't turn, or what the problem is. I've used Dearborns my whole life and never seen this. They're completely unusable. Have you ever seen this and can you offer a solution? Thanks.

    • @toxiccat310

      Are you talking about the handle that turns on the gas?
      I've never experienced that. But could be corroded. Don't use any kind of oil on them that is flammable. I'd maybe try to heat up the metal that actually turns and see if that'd free it up.

    • @toxiccat310
      @toxiccat310  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your pilot or actual flame? If it's your actual flame just turn the knob up, like the white handle on mine. If there is still not enough flame try both the restrict/open air vent. If that doesn't work it's probably clogged gas vents or there is a hole in the gas line to the heater, which is dangerous. You can check for holes by get soapy water in a spray bottle and spray the line and look for any place that is bubbling. If so, replace line.
      Hope this helps!

    • @toxiccat310
      @toxiccat310  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Leave the pilot on definitely! I live in an old home so I'm not too worried about carbon gases. If it would make you more comfortable with your kiddo get a couple of carbon detectors in your home. I'm in my late 50+'s and I've never had problems with them as long as I clean them after winter and before I start them back up. About every 3-4 years I take them to a gas company and get them serviced. I have animals and my cats worry me the most, they like to get really close to them. When it's really cold out I leave them on low all day and slightly turn up at night. They do dry the air out so maybe a humidifier for your home if you have sinus problems.
      I believe in God so I pray every day to protect my home, keep it safe and my animals safer.

      My mothers people were from North Carolina, most people had heaters like this to heat their houses. One in each room, or one big one for two rooms. Many people also had a gas fired ceramic log in the fireplace. I never heard of anyone getting burned on them, everyone watched the children, and instructed the children to stay away from the heater. These type of heaters were very common and the nice thing is they do not use any electricity to work and they put out a lot of heat. I'd think if you are really worried about little hands, get a big heavy fireplace screen to put it in front of yours. You can also do, how a lot of people do with small children - hold their hands in front of the hot unit, till they get the message it is hot, not so they get burned but so they know to stay away from the lit unit. The same way you teach your children not to play around the hot cook stove. My grandmother had these in her house , with small children and grand children since the 1940's and I never heard of a fire being started or anyone getting burned.

      @@victoriahensley3419 possibly may be clogged or have some pin holes in it. Definitely change that out. You can buy a new one probably at a hardware store, just take the old one with you. It just screws off on both ends.

    Hmmm, but the white knob doesn’t need to be on to light the pilot?

    • @toxiccat310
      @toxiccat310  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, the white knob just regulates the low/high flame of the fire. IF, you cannot get the pilot lit, turn the gas on, turn white knob on just a little then light the jets. That'll light the pilot if it is not clogged.

      Not sure which valve you mean. White handle turns flames up and down and butterfly looking knob controls pilot light.

    If the fire goes out the gas will continue to flow How is that not dangerous?

    • @toxiccat310
      @toxiccat310  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is IF the fire goes out without turning the jet off. In a normal situation the fire will stay lit until you turn it off.

    At least have your things ready, i.e. lighter, before you make a how to video. You turned the gas on without the lighter in your hand, then, turned the gas off and your lighter didn't even work? Wow! Didn't even see the stove light up? And that folks, is how not to do a "how to video". You should consider re-recording that whole thing...just sayin
