Your lectures always help. During pandemic, learning from textbook is better when enhanced by someone detailing cognitive psych.

The geons remind me, very literally, of the composite shapes you are taught to "see" as an artist. When you are quickly sketching out figures, scenes, or moving objects, you're advised to capture the essential parts. All of the base shapes we were taught can be found on list of geons.

An artist here, I have thought the exact same thing as we were presented with this Recognition by Components theory.

VERY NICE EXPLANTION OF PSYCHOLOGICAL THEORIES

This object recognition by geons reminds me of medical terminologie where word fragments are used to create new words.
Example itis, cardio, dermato etc. A breaking down into reusable fragments ( geons ) simplifies recognition of objects. So to speak reduces human CPU usage in object recognition.

So we come back to gestalt theory? When the human mind recognises objects by just the outlines or incomplete pictures it is reverse engineering the object by using geons that fit?

Thank you! It was quite interesting. I wonder how the brain disassembles more complex shapes into these component parts.

Hello! I was wondering if Biederman's theory is a top-down process or a bottom-up process? Thank you for the explanation btw! I have to do a report on this for school and this really helped me out :))
