I grew way too many big onions this year. I have been pickling them, dehydrating them and garlic. My wife is going to kick me out if I keep stinking up the house. I tell my wife it's Travis' fault he taught me how to be successful in growing and I got the recipe for the pickled onions off his website.
That's funny! Do what i did. Get a medium freeze dryer. $2400 roughly but it pays for itself if you're into prepping food for when the shtf. Average 25-30hrs and its bone dry to last 20 years
Lazy Dog Farm is still the Grand Poobah of Onion Experts. Starting from seed in Feb. for Michigan is quite the commitment for many of us. You have to have a light for that time period. Can’t go outside. I have been seeing onion slips from Bonnie Best at Lowes and Home Depot in June. Buy those over the “sets”/bulbs. And onions are survivors. They just want some dirt to grow! They are my funnest plant to grow. I get my slips from Dixondale, Tx. Grow ONIONS!
Grew bunching onions this year for the first time. Evergreen and heshiko, which seem to be 2 common varieties. They 100% divide at the base and can be divided and replanted.
I also started 4 short day varieties on 9/5. DP Sweet was the first ones up on 9/11. Second up was Candy Onion on 9/13. Waiting to see if the Chanti and GA Boy pop up, First time onion grower using your excellent advice. Thank you Travis!
Thank You. Have a variety of onion seeds, but other than Long, Med, Short Day, I had not put it all together. Perennial -vs- bunching just went over my head. -- 💌🍒
I live in the intermediate section of the country and I put my onion starts in the fall. Yes sometimes if a cold snap comes through it can set back my plants for a little bit but then they recover. This year I started my onions seeds a little earlier so that I can get them out before the at least a good month month and a half before the first frost date so they have time to establish the root system and I think that will help keep them from getting Zapped if a cold snap comes through
As far as short day onions, I don't know of any sets available. However, there are intermediate day onion sets available that will make good bulbs in Zone 6-8. I planted a bag of Conquest sets from Tractor Supply that made nice large bulbs in 7b. I've also planted a bag of Super Sweet onions that are supposed to be the variety Candy. They made large bulbs but more than a few went to seed. To be honest, I'll never order onion plants again. I've ordered from several companies but I always get overpriced, half rotten or dried up plants that take weeks to start growing.
Jeff from East Tennessee! Question: I started some DP Sweet. I planted these seed on July 26. I planted them this early because I wanted a bigger plant. They came up and looked beautiful. They got about 6 inches tall and some of them started to form what looked like a little onion ball right at soil level. Now should I plant these onions?? Maybe I started them too early!! I was hot!! They were outside in some good shade!! Can they try to bulb?? Has this happened to you before???
Yeah they'll sometime form a little bulb at the bottom, I suspect due to the day length at the time. But it usually doesn't affect the long-term performance of them.
Quick question for Lazy Dog-in the spring my local feed store out here in the boon sticks of Alabama sells small red, yellow and white onion bulbs. They come in huge burlap sacks and u just dig out however many u want for about a dollar a pound. Do u consider these “baby bulbs” the same as the bulbs in the big box stores ?? I end up getting some fairly nice slicers so I’m confused what the difference is between the box store bulbs u say not to buy and the bulbs in the burlap sacks at my local feed store.
Same thing. One of the big issues with the ones in stores is that they often don't say whether they are short-day, intermediate-day, etc. So gardeners buy them and they often underperform because they're not suited for their region. But if the ones you buy are making decent onions, keep doing what you're doing.
When you say "buy onion plants", what size/format are they going to be in? Are they in pots? Bags? Boxes? I'm not sure I've ever seen anything other than seeds and bags of onion sets up here in Ontario Canada
My walking onions have yet to start walking. They have made duplicate bulbs under the soil. How long does it take for them to start walking? Mine have been in the ground since October 2023. Thanks.
There's different types of multiplying onions. Some do it from the top bending over, some multiply at the bulb. It sounds like you got what's called a potato onion.
I use those onion sets every year with no issues whatsoever and get fantastic crops from them, those in your hand are tiny in comparison to what I get. I just planted up a full raised bed of Senshu after prepping the beds over the last couple of months since I harvested them all, a lot of Blood Fish and Bonemeal and plenty of chicken manure pellets then covered with layers of cardboard to encourage the worms to come up and help mix it all in. Why you are anti Onion sets I don't know but please don't put people off from trying them, not everyone has the space or time to grow from seed then transplant the tiny seedlings.
Your past onion videos inspire me .your onions look amazing and huge in your videos
I am so inspired to grow onions because of yall!
Thanks
I planted my Egyptian Walking Onions from Lazy Dog Farm today in zone 7b... truly enjoy your videos.
Thank you! Clear and concise!
I grew those packaged onions from Home Depot and harvested very large onions. I have great success with them year after year.
I can’t wait to get my Egyptian walking onions in 😊 Thank you 🙏🏻

Dehydrate them outside then no smell in the house. If you have a garage or out door covered area do them there. 😂

I purchased some off Amazon but the company canceled on me. I'm glad they did

I plant my onions in the biggest catering pans I can makes it much easier

They're more "bare root" -- just plucked from the soil, trimmed, and wrapped with a rubber band usually.
Where can I get my hands on some Luiseana shallots?
We usually have them in stock in late summer. But they go fast.

Aww, man. I bought those onions.
You bought the small onion sets? Use them.
