This is just great! The performance showed that there is so much more than MET and ROH and celebrity singers, there are opera houses like this one in Modena doing a great job with young and upcoming singers. And yes, you can make a beautiful show without rats, motorbikes and flying objects on the stage.
As Puccini completed the final scene of La Bohème, he was so moved that, as he later wrote, ‘I had to get up and, standing in the middle of the study, alone in the silence of the night, I began to weep like a child. It was as though I had seen my own child die.’ Lo spettacolo inizia a 12 minuti 35 secondi.
We all know that the ending will eventually come. We all still shed our tears at the very end, as if it is the first time, every time the end comes. *goes on ugly-crying*
What a relief seeing a real traditional performance instead of all that contemporary junk. Magnificent 19th century opera taking place in the 19th century. And an extraordinary cast of beautiful young voices. Singing and acting with passion and beauty. More like this will drive me back to the opera in a second. Puccini’s enduring masterpiece.
I haven't seen a performance of La Boheme for decades, this had me in tears in every act. I liked how he audience was clearly drinking up every moment with pleasure. The singers and orchestra were good, the production clearly made with love. Thank you, a ray of light in these grim times..
Happily surprised to see such a beautiful production and lovely singers. The end of Act I was poetic, as Puccini intended, with the soprano taking the high-C, and without a tenor trying to outshout her!
It was the first opera I saw live in 1980 at Covent Garden, Mirella Freni was indisposed, Kiri Te Kanawa stood in with Peter Dvorsky as Rudolfo, a memorable experience.
By any standards this was a superb performance , I think that Pavarotti would have been hugely impressed with the acting and singing of these young singers in his home opera house . The settings , costumes all very simple and traditional , I believe Leo Nucci's directing brought the whole show together and alive , made the singers become real people , no famous names of the past could have done any better . Complements to the beautiful orchestra and conductor . I especially like seeing the chorus being brought up front and given a bow , they are an essential part of the performance and I love to see the assortment of people they are . Congratulations to All !!!

Magnifique version de La Bohême, de jeunes chanteurs tous très talentueux, une mise en scène intelligente qui ne cherche pas la relecture de l'œuvre, l'émotion est intacte, les larmes toujours présentes à la fin...

Enthralled by what I am watching! It seems to fulfill the great composer's vision. Great singing actors who capture the flippant spirit of starving would-be artists in Pigalle guarter. I adore their reckless energy. The mood swings captured by Puccini are an amazement.
Pardon me for offering a correction. According to the libretto, it is based on "Scènes de la vie de bohème" (1851) by Henri Murger, the action taking place from 1837 to 1838 in the Latin Quarter of Paris (today's 5eme arrondissement). La Sorbonne (1253) being its most famous institution and remembered today for the 1968 student uprising. Pigalle would have been far too distant and transport too expensive for young people and will become an artist hot spot along with Montmartre between 1880 and 1900.. It may be helpful to look at a map of the period to see Paris before the Haussmann urban revival (1853-1870). Historically, it is taking place between the 1830 and the 1848 revolutions that are affecting France and several other Europeans countries. Like today, the center of the capital is vibrant and expensive but students and artists don't mind sacrificing comfort and privacy to convenience. Thanks!
