The growl Henk added toward the end was his gift to Floor. When Floor was a child, her singing hero was Henk Poort, and especially with Phantom of the Opera.. Being able to sing Phantom with Henk was a dream come true for her, but knowing her metal career, he added the growl as a surprise gift for her. That is why, when he did it, she had that jaw dropping shock smile on her face. She couldn’t have wished for a better surprise from him.
Henk was adding distortion to his voice for only the second time in his career. He did this especially for Floor. This was similar to the arrangement that Nightwish does in a heavy metal/rock style. Floor states that she is a big fan of Henk. She saw some of the Phantom productions when she was younger. This is the only reason Henk did the distortion. He stated in this show that if he auditioned for a part and they heard any distortion in his singing they would show him the door. Nightwish may have Henk as a special guest to perform this song in Amsterdam in November 2020. Great reaction video Michal! Be well!
This arrangement was done by Michael Fisser, the singers and the band. Although it's not the Nightwish arrangement, it is obviously not the original arrangement, but somewhere in between the two.
The distortion bit for henk is actually true. Floor taught it to him for this song and disturbed version of sound of silence. The key to this show is for well established singers to step out of their comfort zones and venture into new areas of music for henk that was heavy metal and voice distortion
@@erikjansen4298 Well, as good as Floor is, she shouldn't be on this show if that is the key, because her comfort zone is, well...yea. Though, in that vein, it could be said her role in the show, then, would be to challenge and inspire the other singers, much like she did Henk.
@@erikjansen4298 Where did you get that information? I’m pretty sure that I had heard Henk say in an interview that he contacted his own singing teacher for instructions on how to growl. I never heared him nor Floor mention that she tought him. And she probably didn’t, as it was his surprise for her.
What impresses me about Floor ,among everything else she does, is she knows when and how to breathe. Amazing set of pipes and breath control. She's just so good at everything she does.
On Henk's defense i must say that in this show he's getting outside of the box. That's not the way he used to perform it. This is a heavier version in honor of Floor's heavy metal background.
Henk was adding distortion for Floor. He practiced it for his version of Disturbeds version of Sound of Silence, wich he performed for Floor on her day on this show. Fun fact: Henk was Floors idol when she was a young girl. They are now going on tour together.
I love Henk's (tasteful) addition of distortion, same as in his performance of Sound of silence. I never expected that it would sound so powerful, when an operatic singer does this. Most singers in rock and metal music, who use distortion, though they sound aggressive, it's always a little bit thin. But Henk sounds like a "thundergod".
They sounded awesome but you missed the hug at the end. He distorted for Floor and he also did it when he sang Sound of Silence by Disturbed for her. He practiced for Sound .
Great reaction! You mentioned the emotion in her voice, I think this is her most incredible asset. No matter what she is singing, every word in any line of lyrics comes out exactly how she wants it to, however subtle or not, but it all makes an incredible difference. I hope you continue to react to all of her performances on this Beste Zangers show. Her diversity and talent will continue to amaze you. Get through those and then move into the diverse Nightwish catalog.
. The distortion from Henk was really just a bit of a playful joke for Floor. . It was based on his interpretation of sound of silence earlier in this particular series, when he added distortion just as David Draiman did in the hit version. Floor admires Henk and listened to him when she was growing up. . I am a big Nightwish fan and have seen them in person twice and they are amazing and Floor is brilliant, has amazing stage presence, welcome to the Nightwish army, you will be glad that you came. Pft. I Mean Henk is world class at what he does, but distortion is not something he's practice in. He's kinda bad at it here, which makes complete sense since he hasn't praticed it for a long time. It sounds pretty good, but I mean he's nowhere near perfect here. Love him though! Just, let's be real.
Excellent reaction and review. Floor is amazing BUT this show stunned even her most ardent admirers as she sang in different genres and in different languages!!! It became a must watch Saturday night to see what Floor does on this show. She sang everything from a German aria to a C & W tune in English and even a salsa song in Spanish, truly an amazing display of her versatility on this show. Despite her success as a metal vocalist she was not well known at all in her homeland where metal is almost never played on radio so she was determined to demonstrate her skill set and man to say she stunned the Dutch would be an understatement.

Nightwish song - "Song of Myself" live from Wacken 2013 Floor Jansen song - "Winner" also from Beste Zangers - very emotional performance - great song too In case anybody hasn't shared yet: Beste Zangers is a show out of the Netherlands where a number of famous singers get together and perform each other's songs (they do covers) for each other. @@carlossilva7530 I agree with you about this. Marco has apparently written that he's struggling too much with both depression and the music industry generally. Without him it's definitely not the Nightwish I was enjoying when I wrote my original comment.

They were performing Nightwish's version of the song, that's why Henk used so much distortion, to pay homage to the "metal" aspect. He did that for Floor.
Nightwish was already there when the time After Forever was opening band to them. They had achieved that level of immortality when she was invited to replace Anette 😉

Thank you for the great reaction. I am a Nightwish and Floor Jansen fan. The D6 at the end was great. I call Floor, God's gift to the world. But, would you like to hear a G6? You need to see Mary, did you know. Voctave ft. with Mark Lowry. Kate Lott hits a G6 at the very end. And, it's a soft G6 at that.
The distortion part of henk you were talking about was on request of floor actually( nightwish version) its a matter of taste ofcourse but it added even to the duet. Check out henk poort sound of silence i wonder how you would like that
Her sister said in an interview, and Floor confirmed it, that Floor herself used to go around the house when she was younger singing this. And as others have said here, Henk in the last part of the song is invoking the Nightwish version of this song, where bassist Marko Hietala plays a darker more sinister even "growly" Phantom.

Really nice reaction, a bit late to the party but that cannot hurt because its the vocal powerhouse that is Floor (and Henk). ;) Others have pointed out why Henk did add the rasp, and the band used the metal arrangement for the song, so instead of Floor adding her distortion to her parts, Henk took the Distortion role instead. But i get what you are saying, I love it but if you expect a certain thing, it can sound a bit out of place. :) So to get a different view on Henk's vocals, i suggest the song "Vivo per lei" which he sang with Emma Heesters, you will love it. You stumbled on a "dangerous" tv show from the Netherlands with this, it's a show with only singers, doing their craft for eachother, and this season was very enjoyable with many songs worthy of many a playlist. But yeah, "Vivo per Lei" i suggest checking that one too ;) Ty for the upload, it was good fun :D
Hey you did the song... loved to hear the song again.. and love your reaction and your lovely face expressions... next up.. nightwish - storytime. And best wishes from me.. hope you will get well soon.. greetz shay.. (from the netherlands)
Queen to D6. Checkmate! that sums it up pretty much. Let us also pay some tribute to Mikis reaction, profound and to the point. Not sure if all of you guys realized we are privileged to listen to an emmy-award winning artist (you can see the Emmy in the background). After browsing through your channel I really would love you to react to Floor's version of Shallow. I think you will love it, as it has all the things you were missing in the original one from Lady Gaga.
In Disdain she isn’s really growling, it’s more screaming what she does there (which is also impressive). Like the others said Floor’s best growls are in Wild Card.
And then there is Nightwish's Yours Is An Empty Hope. That's slightly difficult to hear until you realize it's actually HER growling while Marco is using clean vocals! Then, of course, it is perfectly acceptable to rewind and give it another listen.
@@treintje1001 the fancam video from MFVF 2013 shows her vocal better, actually. She full growl in disdain, it's so aggressive and beautiful. If you want, check that record *or* TheDrifter65's video with disdain.
As others have said, this was the Nightwish arrangement of the song. As far as I know it was only done with their original singer Tarja and long-term bassist/vocalist Marco. To hear Floor doing it was a real treat. During one of the Betse Zangers episodes Floor and Henk talk about how he agreed to this duet only if they could repeat it with Nightwish when they play The Netherlands later this year. Everyone's hoping this does happen and it makes it onto TH-cam promptly! A live version of Marco and Tarja doing it from the End of an Era DVD is on YT and well worth your time. As for more Nighwish, all the recommendations below which feature more of Marco and Floor singing together would be great as their voices really complement each other's.
When you (and some others) said that this was "the Nightwish arrangement that had only been done by their original singer", you're surely not referring to their rendition on their "End of an Era" live concert in Finland, right? I mean, there's no remote comparison. This was (probably) much closer to the Andrew Loyd Webber original than to the more heavier version by the band
Floor grew up idolising Henk..In his defence he is a lot older now.He agreed to do this if he could do it with her later at a nightwish concert. His rough bit was him meeting Floor on the metal platform
And Floor's interpretation of Shallow from Beste Zangers of course. As you've done a reaction to Lady Gaga singing it, it would make for a very interesting comparison.
Excellent reaction, while you obviously are a voice technique nerd just like Floor - that's what we need, to get a better understanding of why Floor is so damn phenomenal and have that effect on us, the fans. On stage she is complete, the whole package - Toumas's lyrics coming to live in sound, emotions and gracious moves - and you get it at once, and explains it. Well, you are awesome. Please dig in more of Floor and Nightwish like The Poet and the Pendulum from Wembley 2015 (emotional roller-coaster and a masterpiece) - Sleeping Sun from Tampere 2015 - (techniques in front) - Greatest Show on Earth from Tampere - the title says it all - epic and awesome - or Dead Boys Poem, from Buenos Aires 2018 - simply awesome performance. You could also go to your cellar and listen to the songs Floor did in Beste Zangers and pick either Shallow (compare to original) - or Winner..
A bit late but you might enjoy Floor sing 'Oh Holy Night' in Finnish. From the seasonal show of metal musicians doing Christmas music. 2016- th-cam.com/video/ym1Wc5dmUYc/w-d-xo.html & 2019- th-cam.com/video/6asFfKqE2vg/w-d-xo.html
I saw (and heard) your reaction to BESTE ZANGERS (season 2019), esp. your reaction to the Dutch operasinger Henk Poort. I'd like to add somethimg to hear your reaction to a Dutch opera-diva in BESTE ZANGERS season 2018: Maria Fiselier, who works with the German "Komische Oper" in Berlin. She rapt Eminem's LOSE YOURSELF, which is (as you can understand) uncomming for an opera singer. See and hear how she steps out of her comfort-zone - th-cam.com/video/8YyuIkVSx-8/w-d-xo.html And ........ check out more BESTE ZANGERS 2019 (Emma Heester & Henk Poort with "Vivo per lei"), Floor Jansen & Tim Akkerman with "Shallow". Ending with ....... much love from Holland (or the Netherlands) and succes with your channel.
@@kenRoberts1984 I don't want to be a besserwisser but being a real Singing Teacher / Voice teacher (that schools hire) requires education. Commonly a bachelor or master in music. A vocal coach requires nothing more than being able to spell it and is not a teacher. The difference is almost like a Psychologist and a life coach (not saying that all life coaches or vocal coaches ar bad in any way, but they can be just people who think they are qualified just for liking Mariah Carey). And a "Vocal teacher" is some kind of mix that doesn't exist.
You should react to Nightwish Phantom of the opera with Tarja Turunen and Marco to understand Henk and Floor. I think you will enjoy that even more to be honest. It is a masterpiece.
Very nice commentary and technical analysis. Just watched "Dead Boy's Poem" Buenos Aires Live 2018 now my favorite NW song. But don't miss out on Floor's version of "Shallow" Beste Zangers 2019 which she sang as a tribute to Emma Heesters. Better than Gaga's version
for henk it is most likely his first time singing this, which may sound weird, but henk has years of expirience singing the dutch version. transferring to the english version takes, i think, a lot of time to do correctly. however the entire series only spans across 8 days, with at least 7 songs for each person.
One more small comment: Should you decide to delve into these suggestions, please also note that the music to a large extent belongs to a style that could be called European Operatic Symphonic Progressive Vikingr Folk Power Metal,- and yes,- it´s a thing. Currently THE most popular form of Rock music in Europe, South America and the Far East,- just not that well known in the US though it´s definitely growing in popularity. As it is based on our roughly 800 years of folk music from something like at least sixteen different cultural regions, 400 years of classical composition and then mixed up with modern day metal and has been under development since the mid 90s, though early beginnings can be traced as far back as the mid 70s, it has become a very evolved style morphed into several very melodic sub genres. It´s very much it´s own thing so any reference to any american music tradition and style,- ie Roots, Americana, Rockabilly, Jazz, Blues, Gospel and Country would be irrelevant and besides the point. It would be apples and oranges. Go to it with an open mind and simply react to and reflect upon it without bias and you should recieve a lot of appreciation from what would also become an international subscribtion base with a little luck.

And as others have said here, Henk in the last part of the song is invoking the Nightwish version of this song, where bassist Marko Hietala plays a darker more sinister even "growly" Phantom.
Wow. Honestly, never heard of either of them. Came here from a different reactor comparing her to Dimash. I've heard of, but never listened to, Nightwish. This performance had me tearing up and gave me goosebumps.
hello reaction floor jansen song ,shallow cool
As someone said in another comment section which sums that final note up perfectly I think..... Queen to D6... Checkmate
other songs from Floor in same show:

Fun fact. The thunder at the beginning is real. It rained cast and dogs that night. Perfect timing.
Great reaction Michel 👌Thank You 🦉💜🙏🏼
Really nice reaction, a bit late to the party but that cannot hurt because its the vocal powerhouse that is Floor (and Henk). ;)
Others have pointed out why Henk did add the rasp, and the band used the metal arrangement for the song, so instead of Floor adding her distortion to her parts, Henk took the Distortion role instead. But i get what you are saying, I love it but if you expect a certain thing, it can sound a bit out of place. :)
So to get a different view on Henk's vocals, i suggest the song "Vivo per lei" which he sang with Emma Heesters, you will love it.
You stumbled on a "dangerous" tv show from the Netherlands with this, it's a show with only singers, doing their craft for eachother, and this season was very enjoyable with many songs worthy of many a playlist.
But yeah, "Vivo per Lei" i suggest checking that one too ;)
Ty for the upload, it was good fun :D
Hey you did the song... loved to hear the song again.. and love your reaction and your lovely face expressions... next up.. nightwish - storytime. And best wishes from me.. hope you will get well soon.. greetz shay.. (from the netherlands)
he only put that growl into his performance to acknowledge her background in rock and the upbeat style of this song over the original.
Hi nice intro one my favorite rs songs:) but on topic i really
Queen to D6. Checkmate! that sums it up pretty much.
Let us also pay some tribute to Mikis reaction, profound and to the point. Not sure if all of you guys realized we are privileged to listen to an emmy-award winning artist (you can see the Emmy in the background).
After browsing through your channel I really would love you to react to Floor's version of Shallow. I think you will love it, as it has all the things you were missing in the original one from Lady Gaga.
Yesss!😍🇳🇱
Revamp - Disdain
You will witness Floor's metal growling.
Widcard has better growls th-cam.com/video/GpZMFALYeGc/w-d-xo.html
Actually - the Wild Card from Revamp incorporates even more growls. But Disdain is more aggressive in its own.
Henk Poort, Opera Singer de luxe
Her range WOW
Floor grew up idolising Henk..In his defence he is a lot older now.He agreed to do this if he could do it with her later at a nightwish concert. His rough bit was him meeting Floor on the metal platform
Somehow no reactor had commented on how they mixed up who sings the lines in vs 2 and 3.
That may have been intentional.
My husband knows the gentlemen who is currently on tour as the Phantom (he went to high school with him).
Hello reaction floor jansen winner beste zangers 2019
A bit late but you might enjoy Floor sing 'Oh Holy Night' in Finnish. From the seasonal show of metal musicians doing Christmas music. 2016- th-cam.com/video/ym1Wc5dmUYc/w-d-xo.html & 2019- th-cam.com/video/6asFfKqE2vg/w-d-xo.html
you should check out Floor Jansen - Vilja lied | Beste Zangers 2019 another classic she covers on that show
אוהב את התגובות שלך מיכל. כל הכבוד ! תמשיכי ככה
You are ready for: "The Poet and the Pendulum Live at Wembley" ...
See and hear how she steps out of her comfort-zone - th-cam.com/video/8YyuIkVSx-8/w-d-xo.html
And ........ check out more BESTE ZANGERS 2019 (Emma Heester & Henk Poort with "Vivo per lei"), Floor Jansen & Tim Akkerman with "Shallow".
Ending with ....... much love from Holland (or the Netherlands) and succes with your channel.
Nightwish just announced their new album info!! Its a DOUBLE ALBUM called
HVMAN. :||: NATVRE.
Thank you! Please react to Winner and Que Se Siente by Floor from the same show.
Good music 🎶🔥 in here✨, sweet
Queen to D6 ,check mate.
u must listen her Shallow song!
Floor Jansen is a vocal teacher too.
Singing teacher.
@@F7ster same thing
@@kenRoberts1984 I don't want to be a besserwisser but being a real Singing Teacher / Voice teacher (that schools hire) requires education. Commonly a bachelor or master in music. A vocal coach requires nothing more than being able to spell it and is not a teacher. The difference is almost like a Psychologist and a life coach (not saying that all life coaches or vocal coaches ar bad in any way, but they can be just people who think they are qualified just for liking Mariah Carey).
And a "Vocal teacher" is some kind of mix that doesn't exist.
@@F7ster She has students so she is a teacher of singing.
A D6 is still in her comfort zone 😳
You should react to Nightwish Phantom of the opera with Tarja Turunen and Marco to understand Henk and Floor. I think you will enjoy that even more to be honest. It is a masterpiece.
Very nice commentary and technical analysis. Just watched "Dead Boy's Poem" Buenos Aires Live 2018 now my favorite NW song. But don't miss out on Floor's version of "Shallow" Beste Zangers 2019 which she sang as a tribute to Emma Heesters. Better than Gaga's version
Dead Boys Poem live from Buenos Aires
Great reaction!!
Reactor to vilja lied, i don't know a thing about love, shalow, from the same show (beste zangers)
"Winner" is fantastic too, and a really emotional performance.
for henk it is most likely his first time singing this, which may sound weird, but henk has years of expirience singing the dutch version.
transferring to the english version takes, i think, a lot of time to do correctly. however the entire series only spans across 8 days, with at least 7 songs for each person.
Sorry to correct, The series was recorded in 4 days..... See Floor Jansen Twitter timeline around april-2019 (Fly to / arrive back)
One more small comment:
Should you decide to delve into these suggestions, please also note that the music to a large extent belongs to a style that could be called European Operatic Symphonic Progressive Vikingr Folk Power Metal,- and yes,- it´s a thing.
Henk was the Dutch phantom.he even got the nod from Andrew Lloyd Weber
You should do her version of winner by tim Ackerman from the same show if you haven't already
Next "Storytime" Wacken live 2013 !!
Sweet coach....you are gonna get hooked by Floor and Nightwish....and NW army will come...🤣🤣🤣
