The worst is... the novel this movie is adapting is basically a biography of its author, except he survived the war and wrote about his feelings of guilt for his sister's death :"(
It's loosely based off of that. Apparently when the brother had food he would eat it for himself because he was so hungry, so ultimately she starved. It's very cruel what war does to people.
This was very shocking when I started to hear this music after a memory scene with Setsuko was drawn on "Home, Sweet Home". This music told me "That's the one you lost". Setsuko who jump off from a swing and said "welcome back" for me... Setsuko who cleaned in the shelter with shouldered a doll in her back.... Setsuko who did a fire start of a clay portable cooking stove... Setsuko who did sewing for me with hurting her little finger which isn't accustomed.... This music told me "The one you lost is only one wonderful five years old partner who needed to be here much together in this severe survival life. She was your precious precious precious Setsuko who is never the useless baggage for you..."
"I put Setsuko's ashes in the tin" that is the most heartwrenching and absolutely horrifying thing I have ever heard. A little girl reduced to ashes and bits of bone... It's just unimaginable.
The worst part for me was when I remembered back to the beginning of the movie, where Seita's lonely and destitute corpse is clutching the candy tin, which he had been carrying with him his entire life, and which the callous employee at the train station just pitched into the field out of frustration.
Hurts to even think how much seita had to go through at such a tender age Losing his mother, acknowledging his father's death, burning his lifeless baby sister, all in such a short span And then starving to death alone
Imagine being fourteen or fifteen and having to burn the body of your own little sister or brother. I could never do it... As soon as I saw this scene, I hugged my own little sister. :'(
Rest in peace, for the both of you. And may you both be in happy in heaven, with your loving mother. Oh, and uh Seita? Say 'goodbye' to your father for me, will you?
Still gets to me even after all these years-I learn to give more after this movie, I learn to be a better and kinder person after this. I learn that kindness and act of compassion is why we are put on this green planet. I learn finally, that to give blindly and expect nothing back is how we leave our footprint in the sand in God's eye and heart.
The emotionless look on his face as he puts the corpse of his little sister into the box... it hurts me inside because I feel it shows how broken he is. It's trying to stop feeling in order to make the pain go away. He doesn't know what to feel other than grief and desolation.
It is only those who have neither fired a shot nor heard the shrieks and groans of the wounded who cry aloud for blood, more vengeance, more desolation. War is hell. -William T Sherman
I could not stop the tears rolling down my eyes when i watched the movie a year ago. Great work of art! I would never forget 蛍の墓 through out my life... and when i just came across the video it again brought tears into my eyes. 'Hats off, standing ovation or round applause', i don't know, it's way beyond that, i reckon!
I think the saddest scene of this movie was everything because zeita and setsuko lost their mom and dad, zeita got beaten up, setsuko was dying of starvation, and they had no place to live besides a shelter that has no door to block the cold
my question is HOW did the actors who voiced the movie make through it without crying??? I know I could never take part of this movie without taking a breather every five seconds
The last act of love (cremation) by big brother Seita ("nii-chan") for little sister Setsuko. He is destined to join her soon in the afterlife. At the very least, Setsuko was the only one in the Yokokawa family to have someone properly mourn for her at her passing.
I am ashamed of myself, father. Wherever you are, stay safe, stay happy, laugh a lot, tell your stories... I am breaking, father. I am breaking down here on Earth. I am losing all my battles
I had no idea this movie was sad before watching it, I didn't really know much about it. Then it destroyed me. I reckon it's much better if you don't know it's coming.
I agree. You can tell that the woman voicing Setsuko was not a little girl, and it was kind of eerie because she's supposed to be a kid but has this unnatural voice coming out of her.
the first time I saw this scene I remember being depressed for the rest of the week. Now I've seen the movie like 4 times, and it's not that bad anymore but still makes me cry every. single. time. And the mindblowing thing is that this is and has been the only movie that has made me cry ever. And I love it for that.
When Seita is laying down looking up at the sky, to me, that's him accepting his own death. Perhaps dying at the train station was going through the motions of finding another relative to stay with, but he already knew there wasn't a chance.
This movie is for sure, the most sad movie ever created, i am a guy and dont cry easily but this movie makes me cry every time i see it, especially the scene where seta looks at setsuko the last time before closing the box, it breaks my heart and makes me cry my eyes out.
They really need to redo the voice acting for the English version. Its embarrassing how corny it is on such a beautifully made movie. I always watch it in Japanese but when i showed it to my family they insisted in watching it dubed... bad idea.
this movie still affected me whenever i watch it.. trully a sad, sad movie. I can only imagine what Akiyuki Nosaka (the writer of semi-autobiographical book "Hotaru no Haka") felt when his sister died that way..
I made the mistake of watching the movie last night, before I went to bed. Needless to say I didn't sleep a wink. Such a sad movie. I need a Miyazaki pick up after this...
It is common in all wars that those who suffer the most in any war are not those who made the decision to wage war, but the civilians involved and the children who lost their parents. The subject of this story is based on the author's actual experience, which is perhaps what the author wants to convey. He wanted to depict what war looks like from the eyes of ordinary people and children and the damage it causes, and that the greatest victims are vulnerable people like children. This is a depiction of the reality of war from the perspective of a victimized child.
This movie destroys me..I honestly have only seen it once time, and just that one time...its the most heartbreaking film i have ever seen.I cant bear to see it again, this clip breaks my heart, the poor girl...the pain they go through, the hardships...i felt a sense of anger and sadness throughout watching it espicially as no one even tries to help the kids..i wanted to give the girl a big hug,to protect them so much...War is evil,cruel....amazingly powerful movie.
I watched this once, years ago. I never watched it again. Having your heart ripped out of your chest is not something you want to experience more than once.
I think that the strongest moments in this movie (heck, almost any movie for that matter) are the scenes with little to no dialogue. Those are the moments where the actions and expressions of the characters really are emphasized. Along with the music played along with the scene, it can make for an extremely emotional scene.
one of my most favorite studio ghibli films ever and I can't watch it all the time because it made me so sad. I'm crying soooo hard as i'm writing this comment. :*(
The worst is... the novel this movie is adapting is basically a biography of its author, except he survived the war and wrote about his feelings of guilt for his sister's death :"(
+Tuule Tenson well said, mate!
Don't lie. That's different. They should take care of their own country.
It's loosely based off of that. Apparently when the brother had food he would eat it for himself because he was so hungry, so ultimately she starved. It's very cruel what war does to people.
He also died a few years ago.
If anything Seita's death in the movie symbolizes the authors feelings og being dead inside after he lost his sister
子供の頃でもこのシーンは悲しかったけど、親になって改めてこのシーンを見ると悲しさが何倍にもなったわ。
改めて平和には感謝しないと思い知らされる
This movie stabs your heart, and the music is the knife
This was very shocking when I started to hear this music after a memory scene with Setsuko was drawn on "Home, Sweet Home". This music told me "That's the one you lost".

Bender B. Rodriguez well said i cried like a bitch
If I were Seita, I might lost all hope to live and fight another day.
" I cried " 😔😔
What are you
"And she never woke up" - saddest quote of the movie
"I put Setsuko's ashes in the tin" that is the most heartwrenching and absolutely horrifying thing I have ever heard. A little girl reduced to ashes and bits of bone... It's just unimaginable.
Re-watching the first tin hurts so much now.
The worst part for me was when I remembered back to the beginning of the movie, where Seita's lonely and destitute corpse is clutching the candy tin, which he had been carrying with him his entire life, and which the callous employee at the train station just pitched into the field out of frustration.
i cried when i saw he had nothing left
After watching the ending I immediately went back to the beginning. It is heartbreaking
Those 10 seconds when Seita looks at Setsuko for the last time is one of the most heartbreaking and powerful scenes in movie history.
True
True bro😌😭🥺
Absolutely 😢
Just finished this movie in Film Class yesterday....let's just say my face started to rain uncontrollably....
have you play Zelda Wind Waker?
well I cried the great sea
いつ見ても悲し過ぎるラストシーンだ😞
Hurts to even think how much seita had to go through at such a tender age
Losing his mother, acknowledging his father's death, burning his lifeless baby sister, all in such a short span
And then starving to death alone
忘れられない曲だ。母親が死んだ通夜で側で横になってた時の心境と重なる。清太の無表情は心が凍り猛吹雪の心境の表れ。
Imagine being fourteen or fifteen and having to burn the body of your own little sister or brother. I could never do it...
As soon as I saw this scene, I hugged my own little sister. :'(
heylinspongesprite good really many times I experienced this
A powerful movie shows Grave of the Fireflies makes everyone emotion, sadness, and cry.
This scene and the music make me sob each time.
Rest in peace, for the both of you. And may you both be in happy in heaven, with your loving mother. Oh, and uh Seita? Say 'goodbye' to your father for me, will you?
O-Dog Kubrick, I love you.
An absolute masterpiece! I hope those that have fallen from war, can find peace.
It is based on a true story...

I cried like never before. This is the saddest movie moment I ever seen.
本当にこんな子供みたいな犠牲者は二度と出さないためにも戦争なんてやってはいけないね。
It is only those who have neither fired a shot nor heard the shrieks and groans of the wounded who cry aloud for blood, more vengeance, more desolation. War is hell.
-William T Sherman
When i saw this movie..I did'nt see this part ..because I started crying now I see it and cry again
"I never went back to the shelter..."
One of the most haunting lines I have ever heard.
Alright I admit it. The first time I saw this movie, THIS scene was where I automatically burst into tears. Coming back to it, nothing's changed. :(
So sad, so achingly moving a flm, and an animation at that. Breaks my heart...
I have sister at same age. I feel your pain and its feels like hell on earth. RIP to the all victims of WW2 . We wont forget you. ;( ;(
I could not stop the tears rolling down my eyes when i watched the movie a year ago. Great work of art! my question is HOW did the actors who voiced the movie make through it without crying??? I know I could never take part of this movie without taking a breather every five seconds
I think that question could easily be applied to the people who had to animate this scene, too.
Wow never thought of that.
Julia Stadeker Its based on a true story
Maybe te cried after each take. Who knows?
The last act of love (cremation) by big brother Seita ("nii-chan") for little sister Setsuko. He is destined to join her soon in the afterlife. At the very least, Setsuko was the only one in the Yokokawa family to have someone properly mourn for her at her passing.
It's the only movie that made me cry...
I love how just as it ends Seita looks towards the camera. The look says two things "Why did we let this happen" and "Is there more I could've done"
😢😢 Can you imagine the smell of burning flesh and that moment remained in his mind and spirit until the end of his days?😢😢
I am ashamed of myself, father.
Wherever you are, stay safe, stay happy, laugh a lot, tell your stories...
I am breaking, father. I am breaking down here on Earth. I am losing all my battles

same here. it just killed me in a moment. 😢😢😢
sometimes i watch this just to make sure i still have emotions...
i still have them
I'm not crying
I'm bawling
Masterpiece. I simply love this sound track...
I agree. You can tell that the woman voicing Setsuko was not a little girl, and it was kind of eerie because she's supposed to be a kid but has this unnatural voice coming out of her.

One of the most saddest anime ever 😢
for a cartoon, it really triggers saddness.
When Seita is laying down looking up at the sky, to me, that's him accepting his own death. Perhaps dying at the train station was going through the motions of finding another relative to stay with, but he already knew there wasn't a chance.
Watching this feels like someone just stabbing your heart multiple times
I made riceballs for you!
I burst my tears out and cannot stop crying when i saw this scene...
*glass shattering* oh don't mind that, it's just my heart breaking and also any feeling of happiness I had.
This movie is for sure, the most sad movie ever created, i am a guy and dont cry easily but this movie makes me cry every time i see it, especially the scene where seta looks at setsuko the last time before closing the box, it breaks my heart and makes me cry my eyes out.
The fist time I saw this movie I cry a lot... My dad was there watching this movie too
They really need to redo the voice acting for the English version. Its embarrassing how corny it is on such a beautifully made movie. I always watch it in Japanese but when i showed it to my family they insisted in watching it dubed... bad idea.
If you're talking about the original dub, I agree. If I may, I'd like to suggest the Sentai Filmworks English Dub. It's excellent.
Riley Fujimiya ill have to check that out
vulkein Totally agree, I've never heard english version (I'm French), but it's horrible ! o_o
I will never forget this scene
crying ..rip all the innocent lives lost
this movie still affected me whenever i watch it.. trully a sad, sad movie. I can only imagine what Akiyuki Nosaka (the writer of semi-autobiographical book "Hotaru no Haka") felt when his sister died that way..
Hope you are well.. found this movie out after 12 years you watched

Whenever I am sad I watch this scene and get more emotional and I try to respect the things I have with me.
this part made me burst out into tears. never knew grave of the fireflies would be this fucking sad
This scene one hits me every time. That critical dmg is just cruel
Noooooooooo STOP I cannot watch this again... :(~~~~ *sniff
I would put it the other way. Watch this movie if you do have a brother or sister, and you will love and cherish them ever more.
I made the mistake of watching the movie last night, before I went to bed. Needless to say I didn't sleep a wink. Such a sad movie.
I need a Miyazaki pick up after this...

Don't watch this movie if you have brother or sister...
This movie just hurts...😔😔
what a sad but very powerful ending to a very well made anime
Rest well young ones. Gone, but not forgotten.

Im crying now
and then i cried
then i cried some more
then i continued crying
I watched this once, years ago. I never watched it again. Having your heart ripped out of your chest is not something you want to experience more than once.
I still remembered the first time I watched this movie... I just never suspected that the ending would be like that! So sad..

it's terrible too that stuff like this happened everyday back then.

悲しくなる、終わりの音楽辛くかなしすぎます!
子供の頃はただ悲しかったけど、大人になって身内を焼くということの重さも考えるようになった
このBGMが涙を誘うんだよね。😭
one of my most favorite studio ghibli films ever and I can't watch it all the time because it made me so sad. I'm crying soooo hard as i'm writing this comment.
