I moved to Hiawassee 2 years ago. As far as medical is concerned be prepared to drive south to Gainesville. The local hospital will patch you up and helicopter you to Gainesville. That goes for any other specialist that you might have to see. For dental I travel 7 miles north to Hayesville North Carolina. Restaurants in this town are below average. The best part about Hiawassee is the lake and hiking trails. Lake Chatuge extends from Georgia to North Carolina. Hiawassee population doubles in the summer due to the activity on the lake and the fairgrounds. Campgrounds for vacationers are everywhere around the lake. If you are renting a home in the mountains be prepared for steep drives with single wide roads. All wheel drive may be required to get to the top. Enjoy!

Don't even think about moving to GA before 65, highest taxes I've seen. Even after 65, remember TN and FL are income tax free for all, not just up to 65k for retirees. If you're considering Cherokee Cty, Canton, Woodstock, etc. Know that they've been raising assessments - and taxes - 20% maybe more for years, no sign of slowing down. The kicker, those property tax school exemptions only apply to a fixed assessment limit, which doesn't move so more and more seniors are still getting slammed with the enormous school taxes.
Traffic cameras and speed traps abound like no place I've seen. Don't even think about protesting or voting for change. I don't recall ever seeing any option beyond reelect the incumbent in county elections. Even the write -in is not honored, they 'll tell you that and signs are up at the polling stations. Never saw so many stealth taxes/fees either, including the annual emissions test on all vehicles, but only if you're within about an hour of Atlanta, in a county eager for the extra funds. Your neighbor across the street in another county doesn't pollute the air so he gets a pass on that out of pocket expense for choosing county correctly.

I appreciate this as I am 63 and possibly thinking of moving to this area. I am hoping to visit this summer. I am from San Diego, so I want to see what the weather is like in the summer. I am glad you touched upon the Medical Services in N. Georgia, however, I was hoping for a little more information. I've been extensively researching this, but it is so overwhelming. Is there any way you can tell me exactly what town/city has the very best Medical Facilities for Retirees? I know it's probably subjective, but I thought I would ask and see if I could get your thoughts on this. Thank you.

Here's a good resource with ratings on GA hospitals. You can search by zip code and filter by specialty. Hope this helps: health.usnews.com/best-hospitals/area/ga

The regional hospital in Blue Ridge, GA has been bought out and is currently running as an ‘ER’ to get you stabilized. If you have medical concerns you should look around.
