京都市の中心に位置する京都御所。長岡京から平安京に遷都されて以来、明治維新までこの京都御所に天皇が住まわれました。平安遷都（794年）時の御所は、現在の京都御所よりも1.7キロ西に位置していました。南北朝時代から北朝の内裏として定着し、明徳三年（1392年）の南北朝の合一以後、ここが正式の皇居となり明治二年（1869年）、明治天皇の東京行幸時まで存続。京都御所は、戦禍に巻き込まれるなど何度も火災に遭い、再建を繰り返してきた歴史があります。現在の建物は、1854年の大火事の後の安政時代の造営です。
京都御所のある京都御苑には、御所のほか、仙洞御所、大宮御所、京都迎賓館などがあります。築地塀で囲まれた11haの区域が京都御所。面積約65万平方メートルの広大な敷地を誇ります。御所の敷地は東西約250メートル、南北約450メートルの長方形で、三つの建物群と庭園があります。
南には正殿である紫宸殿、天皇が政務を執った清涼殿など、儀式や政務に用いられた建物が残っています。中央には、天皇の日常生活や行事などに使われた建物群で、小御所、御学問所、御常御殿などがあり、北は、かつて後宮だった場所で、皇后や皇太子、皇子皇女などの住まいだった御殿や建物が残っています。
京都御所は、江戸時代末期の再建ですが、平安時代以降の建築様式の移りかわりを見ることができ、建築、庭園、障壁画が一体となって日本の伝統文化の粋を今に伝えています。

The Kyoto Imperial Palace is located in the center of Kyoto City. After the capital was moved from Nagaoka-kyo to Heian-kyo, the emperor resided in the Kyoto Imperial Palace until the Meiji Restoration. When the capital was moved to Heian-kyo (794), the Imperial Palace was located 1.7 km west of the present Kyoto Imperial Palace. After the unification of the Northern and Southern dynasties in 1392, the Imperial Palace became the official residence of the Emperor and remained there until 1869, when Emperor Meiji went to Tokyo. The Kyoto Imperial Palace was involved in several fires, including those caused by war, and was repeatedly rebuilt. The present building was constructed during the Ansei period after the great fire of 1854.
The Kyoto Imperial Palace is located in the Kyoto Imperial Park, which also houses the Sento Imperial Palace, Omiya Imperial Palace, and Kyoto State Guest House. The 11-hectare area surrounded by the Tsukiji wall is the Kyoto Imperial Palace. It boasts a vast area of approximately 650,000 square meters. The site of the Imperial Palace is a rectangle about 250 meters east to west and 450 meters north to south, with three groups of buildings and garden.
In the south, there are buildings used for ceremonies and political affairs, including the main hall Shishinden, and Seiryoden, where the emperor conducted his affairs. In the center are the buildings used for the emperor's daily life and events, such as the Small Palace, the Imperial Academy, and the Imperial Palace. In the north, in the former rear palace, are the residences of the empress, crown prince, and prince and princess.
The Kyoto Imperial Palace was reconstructed at the end of the Edo period (1603-1868), but the architectural style has changed since the Heian period (794-1185), and the architecture, gardens, and barrier paintings all work together to convey the essence of traditional Japanese culture.
