Nice to hear someone say they respect Richmond rolling the dice for another premiership, I have always felt the same with WC trading a premium for Kelly. Premierships are so bloody hard to win, you have to capitalise as much as you can.

I'm a tigers fan and I'm pretty chill with whatever decision we go (that's the benefit of recent premiership success talking lol) though I'd definitely lean towards the aggressive rebuild approach. I love Rioli, Bolton, Baker and Graham - multiple premierships between them but the reality is if their heart isn't in sticking around, we're better off moving them on and getting what we can for them. With a strong negotiating position as you allude to in the video, we can package up multiple picks to other clubs in needs of points to move us up the order or get more top end picks before Tasmania come into future drafts.
It's also why the Taranto and Hopper deals were IMO crucial as they will be able to help bolster the midfield for the youngsters with the departures of Cotchin, Martin, Prestia, McIntosh, Pickett (either gone or probably all within the next season or two) looming.
We also appointed Chris Toce who did wonders at St Kilda as our recruiting boss earlier this year so I'd feel confident with him and his team making some good selections.
fwiw, I don't think the future is too bleak for us either (again, maybe that' the post premiership optimism) - we've had a shocking injury run this year so it's been hard for Yze to get a good run at things but we've generally been competitive in most games while playing many inexperienced youngsters. Our cap space will also look pretty nice with so many retirements or outgoings (including Dusty's big bucks) that we can potentially be active in the free agency market in years to come - or potentially take on players from other club's needing a bit of cap relief should there be any bargains to be had.

Good to see you are still going strong.
As you may remember, I am a Richmond Supporter for 57 years.
A good video and want to add and confirm.
The Tigers are due for a big clean out: both on the field and off the field. Arguably the biggest in a long time.
It's time YZE had his own team, and this draft its time to let players go, if they don't want to be there.
His own team, clean air and lets see if can coach and most importantly develop young talent.
Tassie is coming, and remember our CEO is leading that charge.
    Therefore timing is now!
As many draft pick, high as possible, combine the points (as that system is changing also) retire players, develop and play the young guns.
Take a leaf out of Mitchell's (Hawthorn's) book (Short term pain for longer gain).
Forever loyal, since the day Royce, tore the heart out of Geelong in 1967.....
And finally, i always remember the AFL is Australia's most popular reality TV show, with the Tigers often, and rightly so, casted as the villains.

They should definitely look at North and what they have done and learn from their failings. As a North fan, watching us try to load up again after our 2 prelims around 2016, have that not work, then have a couple of terrible drafts resulting in us clean out a list made the last 6-8 years pretty difficult. But then After 2 years of really targeting multiple early first round picks we are starting to turn a corner. For the first time in years, we probably don't need our first pick to be so high for the coming draft.
It seems like West Coast hasn't gone to their draft as much as they should have so maybe it's best to aim for 3-5 top picks over 2-3 drafts.

as a Richmond fan i have really been skeptical with the idea of trading Rioli and Bolton because they are so good for us but in a lot of ways i haven't even considered how much that potentially trading those guys could help us especially with having a new coach, i still don't want to loose these players but Tasmania is right around the corner and that will have a effect on our ability to rebuild so maybe this would be a good thing and do it now so by the time Tasmania enter the competition we will be towards the end of our rebuild (fingers crossed) where as if we didn't take the risk we would be stuck in the middle of a few very compromised drafts which could mean we don't come out of the rebuild till 2030 if not later so though i am not completely for this idea maybe we should bite the bullet and hope that we come out the other side in one peace. i appreciate you making this video and i have to admit I'm looking forward to the possibilities that could come from the off season now I've seen the other side to all this noise and i understand that this is only hypothetical but i am at least more open to this possibility.

  • @sov839
    @sov839 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

I did a bit of research on our draft possibilities, and also used some other twitter sources to get a better understanding (shoutout @CameronHicks__) and here's essentially where Richmond's draft haul could lead
Pick 1 - Josh Smilie/Jagga Smith - I tend to see us going for Jagga since he's a richmond kid and Smillie has had a quiet back end do his "draft audition"
Pick 8 via Freo - Sam Lalor - Mid/Fwd that's more like Petracca than recent prospects I've seen
Pick 11 via Freo - Jonty Faull - Addresses the Key Fwd stocks. Obviously there's Lynch Kozzy Lefau and Fawcett, but we need a genuine young KPF that shows draft talent, and Faull could be the one
Pick 14 via WCE - Joe Berry - Crafty Small however I do think there is some flexibility in who we'd target depending on how players slide and which needs clubs like Melbourne and North address.
Pick 16 via Freo - Tobie Travaglia - bigger bodied HB/Wing that could get in the squad early and really challenge the current younger players in those positions like Trezise and Banks.
Pick 21 - Alixzander Tauru - I think he's ~193cm and loves to fly in the backline. I could also see us taking Harrison Oliver to replace the loss of Rioli if we need to, considering our KPD stocks include Gibcus Balta Blight Young and Miller.
That is a massive, elite draft haul. then the question becomes does richmond want to trade 21 and 16 for a pick between 10-13 to secure a player like Harry Armstrong or Jack Whitlock instead so we bring in 2 KPF's in 1 draft. There's so many options.
Outgoings that will lead to picks, assuming we dont stagger our departures over 2 years so that we can control the list blowout include; (this includes rumoured deals, not my opinion on their worth)
Shai Bolton - 8 and 16 (plus we send a 2nd round pick swap their way)
Baker - 1st rounder from WCE assuming they split, or we give them baker and 16 for pick 3 (again rumour)
Jack Graham - 4 year deal from WCE could lead to an end of first or early 2nd round pick
Dan Rioli - GC pick 6 and 12 for Rioli plus some garbage picks for points so they can get Leo Lombard as an academy selection.
For me I'd rather stagger the departures to a degree, even if that means we hold onto Rioli for an extra year so we have premiership experience across 3 lines (grimes and dusty retirements further remove that experience). However Tassie around the corner may force our hand. The positive to this is the teams that want our players have a load of picks and are pushing for a strong premiership push over the next few years (Freo 3 first rounders and are pushing for top 4, GC should be pushing for top 8 next season and a flag the season after that). We're able to force teams to pay overs since Bolton and Rioli are contracted. Fortunately we still have Neil Balme and Blair Hartley to facilitate this draft. Balme leaves at the end of the year so it's crucial we make the right calls and get this done before tassie. The last thing you want is to rely on the draft like that. We've rebuilt through the expansion clubs once and it was fruitful, but lightning won't strike twice.
If we can nail that down, then we can focus on rounding out supporting players which typically you can find pretty easily as long as your core is strong. Perfect example is GWS bringing in bedford for nothing, or sydney getting Adams Grundy and Jordon for cheap, just to name some basic and recent examples.

As a Richmond supporter this hypothetical excites me for the future. However im very concerned about the possibility of a lack of leadership which could lead to poor development of these future players. I think we cash in on Bolton whilst we're gonna get overs for him, but i think we have to do everything in our power to keep one of, baker or rioli, to teach the next wave of players.
Jagga Smith seems like the perfect Richmond man, so i do think we go with him pick 1, unless Finn O'Sullivan shows a lot this week playing in our VFL side. Trading 6 and 14 for North's pick 2, ajd having pick 1 and 2 would be perfect i reckon.

Bolton is inconsistent and painful to watch these days with his goal kicking. Rioli and Baker would hurt but is what it is to get in talent. I would say getting top 10 picks isn’t that important in this years draft with the depth so delist a heap of players and get in youth see below for my optimistic outlook
    Pick 1: Josh Smilie - Mid - Pat Cripps/Petracca
Pick 8: Sam Lalor - Mid - Dusty clone

People forget Richmonds draft hand in 2021, 5 picks in the top 30. Gibcus, Brown, Sonsie, Banks and Clarke. All look capable at the level. We definitely have a few that need to go but our youth is a lot more solid than people realise.
I don’t think we need to stack picks but we need to nail our picks and get some genuine class
The media are the ones pumping up
All these moves..a player only needs to sneeze in the direction of another state before it makes headlines..I’m pretty bullish on baker staying as I believe he loves it at Richmond and will be the future captain. Everyone knows the Perth real estate market is hot right now so can’t blame him for making an investment.
However, if he does go Pick 15 will not get the baker trade done . Although Bolton is a very unique player, if he is worth two 1st rounders then baker is worth similar.

I am constantly amazed by this narrative of players desperate to go to their home state to be closer to "support networks" These are grown men we are talking about, with every bit of support that money can buy at their diaposal. There are obviously certain situations where you would want to be close to family, like if you have a terminally sick parent or something similar but that does not seem to be the case 99% of the time. With modern communication as it is, every player is a press of a button away from face to face contact with anyone in the world. A short plane ride will get you to any city in the country with less than 24 hours notice needed.
