Video explaining how a moka pot works without boiling water (and why you should preheat your water):

Great explanation! I’m not drinking coffee yet but this’ll leave me well equipped for grad school!

Hey, glad you appreciated! Coffee is a wonderful thing, but lots of people go their whole lives without getting into it. That said, there are probably some health benefits:

So you can make your choice, but if you're daily drinker like me and about half of US adults you do have a physiological addiction.

Nice video. The flow rate point is interesting.
Kind of separately, I have a 3cup elettrica that is always dry when I take it apart, and my 1 cup leaves very little water behind (even accounting for the size of the base). The elettrica will likely boil away some of the leftover water as the element stays hot, but it does not do the stromboli effect unless you over/underfill the basket badly. In terms of other differences, the elettrica notably has a fairly narrow filter tube, so I'm thinking there's quite a bit of reflux in machines even when the last thing you push out is bubbles, and that the thinner tube, and closer proximity to the base is a good thing, even if it restricts flow. The elettrica makes a great coffee. And I've found that machines that leave a lot of water behind generally don't make great coffee... I wonder if there's something to be exploited here in terms of design changes/homemade mods.

Fascinating, I didn't know Bialetti made this in an electric model: www.amazon.com/Bialetti-Moka-Elettrika-Electric/dp/B002EWANQS
I'm perplexed at your comment about overfilling/underfilling the basket being related to whether or not the device stromboli's. The stromboli effect has to do only with the level of the remaining water, so I'd be interested to understand more about what you're saying here.
