While I know exactly where you're coming from in regards to Huda, but I will say just like there is racism there and issues with darker skinned women in the Middle East, those same issues are here in the States. That being said, not everyone over there will feel some kind of way about darker skinned women, just like not everyone over here will either. I know diversity over there is not as wide as it is here, but in some cases it may not necessarily be racism, but just a lack of knowing darker complected people. It's probably a new experience for a lot of them, and I think Huda is trying to head in the right direction. I can at least appreciate their efforts, however I do agree about the need to post those same darker women on their social media the same way they would tan or lighter skinned women. Darker skinned women need way more recognition as models in the beauty community. Change needs to happen.

To those who disagree with Jackie's point on colourism, I would like to give y'all some examples.
As a black Egyptian woman, who has lived in Egypt since I was 5 till 14, then moved to Saudi Arabia and stayed there until I was 18-ish, I can tell you that everything I am saying has been experienced firsthand.
Other than the fact that you are BOMBARDED with whitening creams on tv, like literally every other beauty commercial is one for a blunt whitening product that doesn't even ATTEMPT to be even slightly sensitive about what it thinks of dark skin, it's like brainwashing, plus the fact that being dark skinned(no matter what race, since race isn't a widely spread concept in non-western countries) means you will get remarks varying from insensitive comments, to straight up bullying.
Now let compare and contrast an example with western culture.
When a dark skinned person caves in and even CONSIDERS using a skin bleaching product in the west, you'd have every black and brown person, their mothers, their sisters, and their 5th cousin 8 times removed tell you to stahp it right there sister, and talk you out of it on the spot.
But in the Middle East, if you weren't actually recommended the skin bleaching by a third party, then the moment you consider it, you'd have everyone n their mothers, sisters, and their 5th cousin 8 times removed not only encourage you, but they also probably already use it.
In the Middle East, a fair or white woman is considered beautiful regardless of her physical features, where a black girl has to be sculpted by THE GODS for her beauty to be considered and there would still be bitches commenting on her skin tone.
Of course not every single person in the Middle East is a colourist, but the culture itself, even in some black/dark majority countries, is colourist, and blatantly so.
So stop coming for auntie Jackie she ain't lyin.
EDIT: she liked my comment, so kindly allow me to scream like a 12 year old fan girl.

Ugh yes. ``...Their mothers, their sisters, and their 5th cousin 8 times removed tell you to stahp it right there sister, and talk you out of it on the spot.`` Yup. And contrast that with others creating chemical injections (coming from the southeast asian angle here). Reason why I majorly side-eyed Eddy Avila when he said he felt all the discouragements from using lightening products + praises for melanin meant that they're judging fair-skinned people unfairly. Calme toi bitch.

    • @revinaque1342
      @revinaque1342 7 ปีที่แล้ว +138

This applies to a lot of Asia as well. Not only do you need to be fair-skinned, you also need to be even-toned all throughout. People who have darker patches (like at the neck, or underarms, or anywhere really) get laughed at and shamed. There are whitening facial washes, creams, deodorants, and even whitening washes for the vagina! In Korean skincare, almost everything has a whitening ingredient to it. The attitude of "fairer is better" is just so pervasive. All local celebrities here in the Philippines get regular IV treatments of glutathione, which is a medicine that lightens the skin.

    • @klau666
      @klau666 7 ปีที่แล้ว +104

This applies to Mexico too. Being dark skinned equals being not as pretty or even from a lower social stratum. I've seen some people using the wrong foundation shade in order to appear whiter, which is crazy. We are all so used to shut our mouths because that's a sensitive topic no one wants to talk about but, damn, it is hurting our society so bad that we NEED to speak up. Thank you, Jackie, for always being so brave and straightforward about your ethics.

As a milky individual, who grew up in a conservative household (but developed very liberal views in college, y'all I did NOT vote for trump), I feel like I'm just now becoming aware of how completely uneducated I am on issues that affect the black community and literally every time I come to your channel, you educate me even further. I really thought I struggled to find a foundation pale enough for me, but after watching your videos I've started just looking at what dark shades brands have as well and HOLY SHIT. Like I THOUGHT I had it hard. I'm working on becoming a better ally and I feel like you empower me, not only as a woman, but also to educate myself on issues like this. I can only imagine what you're doing for young black girls that look up to you. Keep being honest and keep doing what you do. Keep calling out brands that aren't inclusive. ❤️

Thank you for your colorism comment. I live in the Caribbean, Trinidad to be exact, a predominantly melaninated country, yet you would never know it by our advertisements and billboards where everyone is paper bag shade and lighter. The only time you see dark skinned people in an ad is for something athletic or flavorful and they are usually glistening in oil or sweat. God forbid, you show a dark skinned woman who is not literally glowing lol.
You also still see ads and inserts in the daily newspaper for "fair and pretty" lightening creams which is quite normal for Caribbean life.
If you are dark skinned and pretty then you are "pretty for a dark skinned girl" and immediately compared to our 1996 Miss Universe winner, Wendy Fitzwilliam - the only dark skinned woman who everyone can agree is actually beautiful.
Colorism is alive and well in most formerly colonized countries and we like it so because we still cling to the lie of white supremacy that lighter is better, richer, more highbrow and aspirational.
Thank you Jackie for calling white supremacy by its name and working to change that.

It's so funny how everyone in this day and age swears by the "I'm entitled to my opinion" mantra, yet when a black person shares their opinion, everyone wants to come for them. Second, colorism and anti-blackness are issues that every state, country, culture, society deals with, even the Black community itself! So the fact that people are taking offense to Jackie Aina and her statement and even go as far as calling her "racist" is astounding to me. If you cannot cough up to the faults of your own people (like I just did), then you are part of the problem because you're just being naïve or ignoring it because it doesn't affect you. you missed the point of the video too.

For everyone that thinks colourism isn't real, in southern Indian movies the directors hire actresses that are very fair from northern India because to them fair skin= beauty. There was a Tamil movie that came out a few years ago where the director wanted the "most beautiful women in the world" so he picked a white girl from the UK!! She even tanned her skin and the movie made it seem like she was an Indian girl when she clearly wasn't. And don't get me started on all the whitening creams they constantly advertise...

Like when FENTY came out, I LITERALLY saw her post nothing but "My foundation has just as many shades" instead of just congratulating Rihanna on her accomplishment. She was like "WHAT ABOUT MEEE" she didn't want to celebrate another female striving for equality in makeup, but rather wanted to take the focus AWAY from Fenty and pull it back to her line. And I GET IT, I understand you want your laubch to do well too, but that is NOT the way. I feel she is pandering too.

Lakhsmidewi Wulandari I'm aware of that fact, but instead of commending Rihanna for her efforts she tried to ride her publicity and was basically saying "look at me, look at me, me too" And Huda literally never posted poc before her foundation launched.

If feel like since rihanna did the whole 40 shade foundation range many companies are now trying to be on par with that because they saw in real time how successful that launch was and they saw the monetary advantage of having shades that cater to woc. So let’s be real now of course Huda’s PR and marketing teams are pitching to her what to do and how to market it inclusively for a variety of shades so that they can increase their profits. No shade there but I think the issue is that if your brand is going to make a decision to be inclusive of all shades then you and your company have to honor those values and actually believe in that, everywhere. You can’t just make foundations for woc and say your inclusive but not market them in your campaigns or social media and now only do it after the fact you’re called out on it. But like Jackie said there’s a lot of colorism in the middle east but at some point she needs to address it like is her brand gonna be like it cosmetics where I won’t even bother to look at their products or is she gonna be inclusive cause at this rate everyone will just keep writing her off. Thanks for using your platform to address the issue Jackie, because she needs to get the message somehow.

I think it's also fair to acknowledge that some brands aren't "it" in terms of certain products. Regarding HUDA, I often see that her eye shadows are great. It's worth it to just see her as an eyeshadow company and just ignore her other products. I also think allies of the community could do a little more. Perhaps we could all just promote brands that are more inclusive more often and, once the revenue drops, these other non-inclusive companies can step it up a little more. Money talks.

Lillian Solomon yes but as a chocolate girl with red undertones Mac limited themselves for dark girls when they only have five undertones for us vs their lighter skin colors with gazillion undertones for their shades. Riri made it fair by also allowing us brown girls to choose from 10 differ shades and tones vs just 3. Hope you get it

So much respect for presenting a valid and honest concern even though you knew it was not going to sit well with everyone. Nameless King exactly, people complain when there’s no shades for darker skin tones but when brands do make shades that are pretty dark..Folks still talk shit. I don’t know if you know the definition of a company, but every single one of those sell products to make benefits, if they made products to just be genuine and « care », that will defeat the whole purpose of economy, there’s associations for that. I love Jackie but I think she’s really influenced by stereotypes and that clouded her review and judgement.

Vin Gin there’s a difference between inclusion and pandering. if you’re just trying to throw token dark skin people in your ads to make yourself look more inclusive and get peoples money (i.e. pandering) but don’t feature any of those people on your actual insta page then you’re not actually being inclusive, it’s just tokenism.

The fact that people could ever comment that you’re angry or trying to make a big deal of race or always talking about race makes me want to scream. I watch a LOT of white youtubers, and I have NEVER watched them encounter any of the issues regarding shade you encountered in this video, much less all at once. The fact that you were still upbeat and joking and trying to make it work is astounding to me. You have every right to be vocal and talk about color as much as you damn please because it’s 2018 and these “dark” shades are a fucking joke. I am SO in awe of your spirit, your talent, and your bravery. I COMPLETELY agree with your comments about her possibly pandering to the black community instead of actually outreaching and including them with genuine intentions. Listen - if you feel it inside that somethings not right... it’s not right. She does the same to men in makeup... we live for the lashes, we fan over the foundation... but are there any makeup wearing men on her page? One or two... the reason why is simple to me.
My opinion is her product is marketed towards the middle eastern beauty community. And because she’s fixated on that market and that money, she doesn’t want them to start closing their wallets when they see people like me and you on her Instagram page. Even though she doesn’t mind stealing terms and language from our communities but... that’s another story. Because of that, she’ll lose in the the long run. She won’t be getting my money.

My mother is Caucasian and my dad is Vietnamese (born and raised there) and my dads side of the family refuses to have anything to do with us BECAUSE we're half white. And I've also heard comments on how we are too white (and Americanized). They also don't like most other races. My dad was super racist towards African Americans/black people my whole life and childhood. (I grew up knowing better of course!) but yeah my point is that people from other countries can be incredibly racist.

Thank you so much for addressing Huda.... because she’s been called out for anti blackness before and I’ve been scared to give any of my coin!!! I never know if I’m alone in my feelings about supporting businesses that are GENUINELY inclusive or not... people always make me feel bad for ‘thinking too deep into it’... ‘it’s just makeup’ ... so it’s nice to watch your videos and see that you think about everything as well.

There's colourism within and between coloured communities. For example, in the Middle East, Asia, Africa, having pale skin is considered the ideal beauty standard. It's such an integral standard that fairness is often equated to beauty. Huda as a woman of colour is still capable of pandering to other people of colour for financial gain, whilst at the same time only using models of pale skin because she considers it to be the most widely regarded ideal skintone. I don't know if she does this, but it's possible

I literally scrolled back to late 2014 and saw black women on there, saw Jackie herself more than once along the way. So the "never features black skin" isn't accurate. If she didn't make any deep shades it would be an issue (for obvious reasons) she makes some and it's "she only wants the money and doesn't care about black people" attitude. So it's damned if you do and damned if you don't. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Shrek Boi oh get over it. Hispanic means of spanish origin, colonialism, or decent. You know what else. Black isn't a race. They come in all the colors. White isn't a race they come in a wide range of colors. Asian isn't a race. Race is just a social construct of grouping and labeling. Used to simplify and generalize. And unfortunately also to classify. We're all the human race. Okay... alright now that your feelings are out of the way.... my point still stands they pick one minority from each broad "group" and say y'all all look like this right? Here that's for you.

Luckily not all the gurus can be bought with PR and a coupon code. Thank you Jackie for mentioning colorism and The Huda beauty brand. Im not here for the Huda brand tho. I think she's out for them coins! I rather support Fenty beauty products . Huda beauty never did anything for dark skin people. Stay woke people

omg if you think colourism is a real issue in the Middle East, it ain't got nothin on Asia. I am Asian and the attitude over there is A-P-P-A-L-L-I-N-G. If you are any darker than a "generic" causasian person, good luck.

ingrid3578 yea I lived there for a year...while most thought I was interesting for being foreign, my Asian female friends tried as hard as they could to not tan! They were even using lightening cream b/c the boys aren’t into darker girls 😲
