    I also bought a 13HD having only used a intuos
    I think the brush lag comes from the computer rather than the tablet. I've only got noticeable lag when I start using bigger/complicated brushes in PS. Other than that it's totally fine even at high speeds
    You should email them about that connection issue! I've not had any problems touching/knocking it
    Personally my only problem is I've not yet found a position I find comfortable to draw in without hurting my back. Other than that it's great!

    Yep, you can definitely adjust the pressure sensitivity levels. As for the nibs, I tried them all out and I didn't notice a huge difference but they do have a slightly different feel to them when you're drawing. I like the felt one best because it's slightly softer and it seems like it's gentler on the Cintiq than the others would be. And to change them you just use this round little metal clip that comes with it and pull them out with that and just stick a new on in. Super easy.

    Hey John, That glove is just a cheap-o glove that you can buy at the drugstore or department store. I actually don't use it anymore, I now use a beige cotton spa glove which you can find at any drugstore (it is lighter and more comfy than the purple mitten).

    You can flip it, so your connection is on the other side. Basically, the last couple of Intuoses and this Cintiq allow you to place your ExpressKeys and TouchStrips/TouchRings by your off hand, so you can work more efficiently. There's a setting in the driver software for orientation.

    Thanks for replying to Skillet's question! Yes, exactly. Having reference photos, a smaller version of the image you're working on, and other panels in Photoshop are great to have on other screens so they don't take up space on the Cintiq. I'm excited to get my third display up and running to have more space. :)

    Got one of these myself a month ago and I LOVE IT!!! Its such a pleasure to be able to hold it and draw like an art pad and my drawing speed has tripled. Only draw back had been the touchy cable Michelle mentions but its not a deal breaker.

    I'm definitely considering getting a Cintiq of my own. I've been through my fair share of Bamboo and Intuos tablets in my time, and my current one is about to go.
    You've had yours for 2 years now, has it lasted?
    Also, how is the collision detection? Can you click small things with ease?

    • @ArtOfMichelleP
      @ArtOfMichelleP  9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Sceptagon It's still working like a champ. Though, I'm not a heavy user of it since I started to do more traditional painting the past year. Yep, clicking small things is fine. But it has to be calibrated every once in a while to make sure the stylus lines up exactly with the curser.

    I didn't notice any static at all. But I've since switched to another glove which is a thin cotton spa glove which I just picked up at a drugstore. I like it better because it's thinner and not as tight.

    Just a couple weeks after I got it, I traveled a week long illustration workshop. It's super easy to travel with, I just slid it right into my laptop case. You need to have a laptop that supports an HDMI connection though, so I had to borrow one since mine doesn't. I don't really use it on my lap at all. The connection from the wire to the Cintiq seems to be a little touchy so I tend to just leave it in the same position on my desk so it's not an issue. I'll let you know if I do try it. :)

    You can customize the button settings to any shortcut you like. You just have to use the Cintiq setup program that comes with it to change the button settings.

    Hi, I'm thinking about buying a Cintiq to help ease my transition from traditional drawing to digital drawing. Honestly, though, how does drawing on the Cintiq feel like? I've tried drawing on a Wacom Bamboo once. Didn't really like how it feels. Having to look at the screen (where my hand is not visible) while I draw further adds to the frustration of digital drawing for me.

      Having own a, while not a Cintiq but I think similar in terms of use, a Lenovo Pen tablet and an Intuos Pro, a Cintiq has its advantages over the Bamboo and Intuos as you can see what you are doing, ie. if you're tracing, your line work will be smoother on the Cintiq as oppose to looking at the PC monitor since you can't see where your hand is going on the Intuos/bamboo and end up with jagged or running lines. Some can adapt really fast to the Intuos/Bamboo looking at the monitor away from their hand but it really depends on the individual. Drawing on the monitor/Cintiq feels a lot more natural since you can see your hand and what you are doing but it still takes some getting used to as it still doesn't have the full texture of pen on paper since its still a glass surface but that being said, its not that bad since you are drawing on the monitor and because you are looking at your work, you can adapt quickly and it comes with different nibs that you can swap out easily to change the feel of the pen on the surface. A felt nib is probably the closest to pen on paper feeling and slows the wear on the drawing surface too.

    Wacom has announced a little while back they're working on their first stand alone tablet. It was originally said it was supposed to come out this Summer. I have a feeling it'll be delayed though.
    Whether it'll be better overall, or a batter value than something like the Surface Pro, or Lenovo Helix (or Android Note 10, Note 8, etc) which all have Wacom digitized pens will remain to be seen, they haven't mentioned specs or a price yet.

  • @ArtOfMichelleP
    @ArtOfMichelleP  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi! I'm glad you like my art :) I usually work with 300dpi and the size depends on what it's for. I don't usually do anything that's smaller that 8"x10". As for your other question, yes, you can do all that. The Cintiq is basically just another monitor; the only difference is you can use a stylus on the surface. It definitely doesn't have to be just display a painting program, you can use it for anything you would a normal monitor.

  • @ArtOfMichelleP
    @ArtOfMichelleP  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi, sorry for the late reply. I thought it might be too small but it is so hi-res! I've had no issue with the size because of that.

  • @ArtOfMichelleP
    @ArtOfMichelleP  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've had it for over a month now and I love it. Even the wire connection that I didn't like in the video isn't a problem because I rarely move it up and down. I don't find it too small, I'm just used to it, so personally for now, I don't think I'd need the 22HD; I'd rather save the money. But to each their own! And I haven't used my Bamboo tablet since.

    Thanks for the review. I own the Wacom Intuos Med. I was thinking about the Cintiq 13HD, I to was worried about the screen size. Your video has answered my question. I am also a lefty, so it is nice to see it functioning well with the buttons on the right.
    So thanks

    No, I haven't used the Companion yet. If it's portability you want, then go with the Companion over the Cintiq 13HD. Then you won't have to lug around a laptop as well. I'm just not sure what the performance is like on the Companion. I'll have to look into that.

    Here's my reply to yours and honenhiem's question: I didn't notice any static at all. But I've since switched to another glove which is a thin cotton spa glove which I just picked up at a drugstore. I like it better because it's thinner and not as tight.

  • @ArtOfMichelleP

    I haven't used the Surface Pro but really, they are 2 different things. The Cintiq is basically a monitor you can draw on, it doesn't have it's own OS or apps or anything like that and it has to be attached to a computer. Wacom is coming out with some Cintiqs that are more like standalone tablets but you'll have to check them out.

  • @TuukkaTarma

    I bought this one too. I've been using it for about 6 months now and its working nicely, no complaints. The only thing is that it's a bit small, i have to use zoom in / zoom out alot.

  • @ArtOfMichelleP
    @ArtOfMichelleP  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes! It's great for having more hand/eye coordination. And I love the shortcut buttons! I have them set up so that the "rocker ring" has brush size larger/smaller on the left/right and zoom in/out is on the top/bottom. The other buttons are set up as: color picker, undo, brush, and eraser. You can customize them up any way you like (those are just what work best for me at the moment). There is no slider on this but the rocker ring works for me for brush size just fine. :)

    I wonder if you must have it with your computer all the time, or if you could attach it and use it like a digital sketchbook.

    Hi Keisuke, Yes, you need an HDMI output on the computer to hook it up. One thing I don't like is my laptop doesn't have HDMI so I can't use the Cintiq with it.

    Nice demo Michelle, have you tried Manga Studio?, it;s the best paint package ever and way better if you like to draw and paint, {it is also called Clip Studio, same prog just more updated version} you will find it way more natural, just a heads up

    The glove thing is funny, I have one too. I started using it back around 97 for video games like Street fighter and it works great for the pen tablet also.

  • @Harrison11106
    @Harrison11106 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Thank you for this, Been considering getting one. I have a bamboo tablet & I simply don't have the hand-eye coordination to draw on it & look at my monitor. As it is I simply draw the old fashioned way & then scan my stuff in &, if possible, simply highlight more important parts in either Illustrator or Photoshop.
    The screen-size was a bit worrisome, but it larger on your vid then I imagined it to be.

    I just got one too, and I kept in mind what you said about the connection from the wire to the cintiq, and I didn't have the same issue. I think that you should contact wacom and see if they'd fix it / replace it

  • @ArtOfMichelleP
    @ArtOfMichelleP  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I know, it seems to be sold out at a bunch of places! I think I had to wait about a week (but that's what it said on the Costco site anyways). If you paid for 1-2 day shipping and they have it in stock, you shouldn't have a problem.

  • @ArtOfMichelleP
    @ArtOfMichelleP  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's great for details but it also has to do with the brush you're using. If the pressure sensitivity is on then ya, it works great when you zoom in to paint. The screen is quite hi-res too which is awesome. I don't know if it's a ton faster when painting but for drawing or line-work it is for sure; It feels more like drawing so it's less likely you have to undo/re-draw crappy lines.

  • @ArtOfMichelleP
    @ArtOfMichelleP  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Heya, you can customize the buttons to what you want them to do - there are probably videos on how to do that I'm sure. And you draw write on the screen and you use a paint program like Photoshop to create the painting.

  • @ArtOfMichelleP
    @ArtOfMichelleP  11 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Left-handers unite! Yes, just flip the Cintiq around and in the monitor settings, set it to landscape (flipped) - if you're using Windows. The plan is to make more vids, just need to find the time. :D

  • @janipartanen3162

    I am surprised that wacom still has not been able to make the screen slide better under your hand. Ages ago I bought a screen protector to my Cintiq 21UX 1st gen which helped my hand to slide sooo much better on the surface. After that there is no need for smudge guard glove. You can find wacom screen protectors from ebay.

    How many monitors and computers and CABLES do I need to make the wacom
    thing work...!???

  • @ArtOfMichelleP
    @ArtOfMichelleP  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    It does have to be hooked up to a computer or laptop. You can't use it as a tablet. But I think Wacom is coming out with a tablet version but it's a lot more expensive.

  • @ArtOfMichelleP
    @ArtOfMichelleP  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hmm, it can be pretty sensitive if I put my headphones on it or move it for some reason. But when I'm actually painting with it, it's never an issue. So basically, if it's in a stable position it's fine.
    I've seen people in other videos using it on their laps but I don't think I could do that because it would be moving around too much and would most likely black out here and there. Maybe mine is extra sensitive?

  • @ArtOfMichelleP
    @ArtOfMichelleP  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes, it needs to be hooked up to a computer (it's basically a monitor you can use a stylus on). To make it more portable, you can hook it up to a laptop. It looks like Wacom is coming out with a stand alone tablet soon but it's a lot more expensive.

    Wondering if you can help me. I just bought the Wacom 13 HD and I am a "newbie" to digital illustration. Do I need to have photo shop as well for my illustrations to work and be saved? The reason I ask is that I will be mainly doing a comic strip in black and white, but I may want to do color illustrations at some time in future.

    great video. I am considering getting a cintiq 13hd myself as I want to get into digital art properly. I currently use a bamboo wacom fun. however I am a student so price is a big thing at the moment! my main concern is.. is the 13 inch big enough? I just dont want to waste £700 on a 13 inch if it would be better to just save up for bigger one? however if the 13 is just as easy to do detail and what not then I would probably prefer this anyway. let me know your thoughts :) thanks!

    • @ArtOfMichelleP
      @ArtOfMichelleP  11 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was wondering the same thing when I ordered it. I've found the size to be just fine. It's quite hi res so a lot can fit onto it and zooming is a breeze if you program the buttons to handle that. I also have 2 other monitors, so I just put some of the Photoshop panels on those to save space on the Cintiq. If you had just one other monitor it would be fine.

  • @ArtOfMichelleP
    @ArtOfMichelleP  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I was worried that lag would be an issue. But I barely even notice it. Like with any tablet, you just get used to how it responds. I loved my Bamboo too but since I've gotten the Cintiq, I haven't touched the Bamboo.

    By mirror, do you mean you want the same display on you monitor and the Cintiq? I don't have mine set up that way but I assume it would be: go into your screen resolution settings (I'm using Windows 7 btw). And there is a "Multiple displays" drop down box. If you want them both to be the same go to "Duplicate Desktop...". You can also just play around with the settings in the screen resolution popup to get it to what you want. I had to fidget around with the setting too to get mine to work.

    Hi! As far as I know, Wacom doesn't make standalone drawing tablets. So far, they all have to be hooked up to a computer. But you can use them with a laptop, so that's makes them pretty mobile. I traveled with my Cintiq and a laptop and it worked fine. I'm not sure what the best completely mobile graphics tablet is though, sorry!

  • @ArtOfMichelleP
    @ArtOfMichelleP  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes, I'm sure that would help, especially when you use complicated Photoshop brushes. The Cintiq is basically a monitor to draw on, the performance is based on the computer you have.

    I was really pleased with most of the left hand flip stuff with my Intuos Pro, though the charge cable is 90 deg and bends the wrong way so keeps getting caught.
    I wondered if you'd tried Lazy Nezumi Pro with the 13HD? I really like it for 2, 3 or 4 point perspective constraints or for nice, fluid curves, hair etc.

    Hi, I have a question. So, regular Cintiq always needs to connect with the computer to use it? benefit is only you can draw on the screen??
    I just figured out at the wacom website that Cintiq companion can be used without line connection anywhere. Also, you can use it as a tablet pc since it has win8 OS and USB, SD memory device.
    I think this is too much big difference even though their price difference is only the $200 between those two.

    • @ArtOfMichelleP
      @ArtOfMichelleP  10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, you've got it right. When I got my Cintiq, the Companion wasn't out yet. I don't mind that it has to be hooked up because I just use my sketchbook when I go out. But the Companion would be good if you think you'll use it all over the place.

    I just check Costco.ca and they now have it in stock (it was out of stock for a while). And it's $969.99 CAD. In the vid I mistakenly said it included tax but it doesn't. It does include shipping (well, in Canada though).

    Are you saying that you can see the whole image on another monitor as it progresses, while you zoom in and work on your Cintiq? Or do you need to zoom out on the Cintiq to see the entire piece on the monitor? TY for responding.

    Hi Michelle. I'm wondering if you ever take your cintiq when you travel, or how easy and comfy it is to use it if you've tried having it on your lap .. on the sofa while watching tv for example.

    Thanks for all the info. I have one at work and i had the same issue with the connection. Sadly it will eventually fail. The noise you hear when you touch the cable is the cintiq losing connection with your computer. I hope it doesn't happen with yours. Took 2 months for Wacom to fix it.

    • @SavoyZ1
      @SavoyZ1 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      It may be truth. I just got my own Cintiq 13HD and the cable works great, no disconnects, so I guess mine is fixed.

    Thanks a lot, you just helped me make up my mind, but he question... does the speed of the computer affect the speed of the tablet?

    • @ArtOfMichelleP
      @ArtOfMichelleP  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, glad it helped! Yes, the speed of you computer will be the same speed as the Cintiq, since it's basically just an extra monitor that you can draw on. So if your comp is a bit laggy with Photoshop brushes for example, it'll be the same on the Cintiq.

    Hi Michelle, I am really considering this, as it seems to be the best one recommended for fine artists/illustrators. Important question: Can you trace over existing, scanned-in drawings on the tablet?

    • @ArtOfMichelleP
      @ArtOfMichelleP  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Imogen Joy Hi Imogen, That's exactly what I use it for most of the time. I prefer to sketch on paper instead of the Cintiq, so I just scan the drawing and take it into Photoshop if I want to digitally paint or ink it. I think that's what your asking anyways!

    Hi. I am in high school, and I love to draw! I am using photoshop on my old house computer, and I love the program but I hate using that old computer! I wanted a Wacom tablet for Christmas this year with a display screen, so do you have any suggestion? Also, if you know this, then what is the difference between the Cintiq 13HD, and the Cintiq Companion? Thanks for the help!!!

  • @ArtOfMichelleP
    @ArtOfMichelleP  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I mainly just use it at my house but I did take it with me to a week-long workshop. As long as you have a laptop to hook it up to it's good to go. You just have to lug a laptop with you. Personally, I wouldn't bring it to a cafe just because I don't want to lug a laptop as well. If you do that already, then bringing the Cintiq wouldn't be that big of a deal as long as your laptop has the proper connections).

    Your video showed up on my "recommended for you" list, probably because I started checking out Cintiq 13HD reviews again yesterday. Nice review, thanks for sharing.
    I expect Wacom to release a "Touch" version within six months, so I'm kind of holding out for that. Also hoping they'll improve the connector, making it more like the J-shaped connector from the Intuos 5. I'm leaning toward the 13" for portability and cost, but secretly lust after the 22". Wish they still made them in 4:3 aspect…

    hello Michelle, i was thinking of getting a cintiq and this seems to be a very good one for me. I also feel very disconnected when i draw or sculpt in 3d. I do have one question though, on the bamboo i'm using now i have the problem that the pen nibs wear off very fast. I don't use it all that often but every other time i use it one is so worn of that i can't use it anymore. now my question is; what is the pen nib wear like on the cintiq?

    • @ArtOfMichelleP
      @ArtOfMichelleP  11 ปีที่แล้ว

      Since I got it in June, I've been using the same nib the whole time and it's a felt nib (the softest of the bunch). I'm at the point now where I'm probably going to replace it. It comes with about 10 nibs of various kinds which is great. So you can pick and choose which one to use and then easily replace it.

    Hi Michelle, I'd like to buy it too, so I have one question. Do you think that it is too small? I know that there are also 22 and 24 versions but they are too expensive.
    It was also good to see that it can be used by left handed (like me).
    Good review!

    @L7U 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm really thankful for this review! watched your update too and that was also very helpful, because, just like you used to, i also use a wacom bamboo and what scared me the most was if i was gonna be able to adapt to a cintiq, after spent almost a decade using just a bamboo. So yeah thanks and good luck to you !

    • @ArtOfMichelleP
      @ArtOfMichelleP  11 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! I'm glad they helped :) I think the Bamboo was a lot harder to get used to than the Cintiq since it's less natural. So, you'll be fine using a Cintiq; especially with the buttons, they are so convenient!

  • @ArtOfMichelleP
    @ArtOfMichelleP  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ok, good to know! Ya, I should contact them about it at some point. I'll try it out on my lap as an experiment and see how bad the connection is when it's moved around a bunch. Have fun with your new toy!

    how is this if I want to use it mainly for taking notes or just writing on it as the best digital substitute of a pen on paper. I already own a surface pro 4. I want another one of this kind so that I can follow online lectures on my MICROSOFT SP4 sitting at my home and take notes on cintiq 13 hd. I have thought about intuos - problem with it is that I need a computer scrren synced with it , to see what I am writing. the problem with other probable solution (Wacom's Bamboo Spark ) is that, you cant write in multiple colour upon it.

    Just a quick question. I use an old wacom tablet, kind of like your old one but much smaller...and older. Usually when I make mistakes, etc etc I press CTRL + Z. The buttons on the side of the tablet in this video, are you able to 'undo' things with them or would I still need to use my keyboard?

    That is sensitive, that you have to keep it rigid otherwise is goes out. Maybe the electrical cable is sensitive. As far as I'm aware the 12" didn't have this issue, it was bulkier but little more sturdy. Do you use it alot or casually ?

    Nice vid, though i'm kinda curious if there's some type of color calibration/modes on the Cintiq, or if the colors looks great in the standard settings itself.
    Also good tip on smudge glove alternative.

  • @Bastian198211
    @Bastian198211 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I might be off here, but if that smudgeguard you're wearing is cotton/wool/polyester isn't there danger of static electricity damaging the Cintiq?
