    You should have a switch (or two) for the factory floor. Get one with enough ports for all the machines and another for the computers etc that are needed on the shop floor. Locate them where the cable lengths would sort of match.
    Ideally, the network for the machine tools should be firewalled from the Internet... In addition to your "office" Internet connection. i.e. firewall between computers and machine tools. Protect your Intellectual Property like you would your children!

    Run cables properly, with things like patch panels, cable management, j-hooks, clean routing and labels. If you don't have the tools or skills hire a low voltage contractor. Do not allow them to leave holes in your building fire/smoke compartments, they need to seal them with a firestop compound. Including the ones that probably exist right now.

      I work for a connector company that makes these RJ45 connectors. All the comments regarding the cabling are great. I have a few more, minimum bend radius of a cable should be 10x the cable OD, this helps maintain the integrity/transmission speed of the cable. If you are making your own cables, buy crimp tooling made for that specific RJ45 and the cable wire gauge you are installing. There are sealed versions of RJ45 connectors that may be good to use in areas that may be exposed to splashing coolant or other dirt or debris in manufacturing environments. These Ethernet cable pairs are usually twisted pairs, minimize the amount of untwisting of the pairs if making your own cables, this again will maintain the integrity/transmission speed of the cable. Every connection in a cable run introduces losses in the signal transmission, so direct runs with no splices are best and reduce the number of failure points. Don’t solder wires together to extend a cable run.
      If you have this cabling installed professionally they should provide you with reports on the initial performance of each cable run to verify their installation and provide a baseline for troubleshooting down the line if you have issues.

    Your best bet is to just buy a crimper and a box 5e and cutting/running cables yourself. In the long run, it might not be any cheaper, but it'll be 'done the way you want it'.
    You don't want to wireless these machines; you need reliability, which means hard line is the way to go. Don't even think about wireless even if it's an option, if I'm being honest.
    If you don't have one (which you might, for obvious reasons you are light on the details about the security system at the shop), you might also look into getting a 6u wall rack and setting up a proper network rack if the office space doesn't have one and you're looking to square away all of your networking for the shop.
    Consider a basic setup such as
    - Power distribution with surge suppression (1U),
    - 24 port switch (1U, perhaps consider one with Power over Ethernet (PoE) capabilities if you think you thing you might want to either a) take advantage of VOIP phone service for whatever reason 2) If a wifi upgrade may be in your future, as the 'proper' enterprise/prosumer wifi APs with PoE are probably the go-to solution for the amount of coverage you need.
    - patch panel (1U) so it's maintainable, clean, and squared away.
    - You can also get a shelf and/or drawer to put all the ISP-supplied stuff on and store any relevant documentation, tools, and bits and bobs.
    Whatever you end up doing, a likely-unnecessary reminder to LABEL. ALL. THE. THINGS.

    Buy a 1000' spool of Cat 6, and some IDC sockets (even Home Depot carries them). If you wanna talk about this in detail, I'll show you what I did in my shop; I've got Ethernet outlets by every machine, etc. It's so worth it.

      Be careful to make sure you get plenum rated cable (twice as expensive, I'm sorry) if you're running it through drop ceilings. It's mandated by either fire code or electrical code.

    Put some small switch or switch with WiFi in the machine hall. You will need shorter cables and have better signal in the hall probably. Even temporarily putting a switch will be fine. You could also splice cable manually, but I would advise against it, at so long run and 1Gbps speed, it might be dropping packets often, especially with machines running. Also ask Kern if they recommend shielded or unshielded Ethernet cables for their machine. For permanent installation probably two small switches, one on one long wall of the shop, and another on another, is another option, this way you will always have a port close by to the laptop if needed.

    Buy a huge roll of cable, a crimping tool and a cable tester and make your own cables. It is very easy, any of your guys can do it. Then route all the cables to the machines and your are good to go. I would have lived in your area I would gladly have spent a morning doing this for you. I strongly advise against WiFi with all the machines around if you want a reliable connection.

    Rick's plan of wiring is the best option but. if you have an old router (everyone has one lying around) it should work as a network switch. Bit of an overrated coupling but will give you 4 ? RJ45 sockets inside the workshop. the 65 long cable would reach then. Nothing wrong with using old equipment as network switches. The 4 ports on the back of a router are effectively a network switch.

    John, its likely likely that you could find yourself needing Shielded Ethernet cable. Due to the power you have coming into the build in a high voltage range, and the large transformers. Plus the winding in the spindles of all the cnc machines. I had a client a number of years ago, that it was a necessity. They had a number of saw mills. In one location the power and equiptment put off so much EMI. That you could get radio stations with a signal tracer for wiring identification. The computer network had close to a 50% loss rate on the cat 5. Two things where require to fix this. Properly sheilded and grounded power for the computers and servers, So that the shielded ethernet had correct grounds. Also I had to use a higher end switch that did more error correcting itself. (this was a time when switches where just starting to get cheap, most of the switches out there where cheap and not much of an upgrade past a hub). This things ended up changing their entire outlook at computers. They went from most network task not functioning at all (ie printing or browsing the net) . To just about any task they decided to add working first try (phones, process monitoring, Ip cameras)

    You definitely should try to rig up some kind of depth gauge in the regofix machine. Maybe something with a digital scale? Can you lay the machine down on its back so you load tools horizontally and they won't fall deeper in the holder? You're going to be doing it a lot, it's worth optimizing for sure!

  • @GospelsSake
    @GospelsSake 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    John, it's best practice to put your CNCs on a seperate subnet. It sounds like you'll want a pro to help you with this, but it's worth it. Having them on a seperate subnet greatly helps protect them from malware/virus. It's not often, but I have seen shops shut down because of infections on CNCs. Also, you will want to use sheilded Cat 6 in that environment, not cheap plenum cable. Deffinatly dont want to use wireless in there. But do keep in mind that a lightning strike can wipe an entire network of ports out also so you will also want to make sure your incoming internet connection is going through a UPS for surge protection.

    • @henryhbk
      @henryhbk 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Being plenum rated and shielded are separate concepts. Plenum rated is a fire code thing (you can run the wire legally in the ceiling plenum) rather than shielding which is a networking issue. When I did my home theater and makerspace in our house, since there was other construction had to do it to code (did it myself) and so all the speaker wire and CAT-6 were all plenum rated by code (and speaker wire isn't shielded - but plenum rated means PTFE insulation on the cables I got)

Do take note that Cat5 has a maximum of 100m as well, unless you have another router in between the cables.

    I'd consider shielded cable if you're going out onto the floor; it isn't much more expensive and it's insurance against all the electrical noise from the motors. I have about 750' of 5e CMP (i.e. rated for use in drop ceilings if they're also air ducts if you want to discuss.

    I don't know what the rules are in Canada but using those patch cords in your ceiling plenum would be illegal by fire code here in the US. The right thing to do is get Cat-6 plenum rated cabel and run it properly (attached to the ceiling or in a cable tray). Then drop down properly down at your desk. Obviously the right way to splice/extend a cable is not to do it. There is a length limit for a cable span, better to put a ethernet switch between long segments. That way from your desk you'd have ports for your computer along with the Kern behind you. Of course anywhere you run ONE ethernet cable your run TWO for the next thing you need CAT-6 for...

    • @xenonram
      @xenonram 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The signal degrades over any length. It is just a matter if the attenuation is measurable and acceptable for your needs. He has 250-350 GB service, so he could run a cable that is 200 ft long and be fine. It’s not like you get to 100 ft and thesignal starts to degrade or you get to x amount of length and the signal starts to degrade. The Consortium that gives the rating just determined that 100 ft is when an unacceptable amount of signal degradation occurs.

    • @hurst_luke
      @hurst_luke 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The international standards are 100meters which is ~330feet. It's more important to maintain the twists in the cable and if using cat6 or higher the separation between pairs (shielding) is really important. As others have stated, not following conventions will still work it will just degrade the signal
