This music was created 800 years ago... And yet it's grip on musical sophistication and emotional pull is as potent as it can be. Timeless beauty that only acquires more appeal to those who value that. Amen to masters .
Music and songs of the XIVth century. 1300-1377. He met and worked for the nobility of France and Luxembourg and for the son of the King of France, John de Berry. At the beginning of his carreer, he travelled throughout Europe in the service of John 1st of Luxembourg and king of Bohemia. He experienced the hundred-year war and the terrible plague epidemia. He lived in Reims at the end of his life. Some say he was the first modern composer and he was the Mozart of the Middle Age. He created polyphony a new musical style never heard before.
I wonder why they always had this strange, ametrical, accents on the text in the chansons. One find this everywhere in the ars nova (and later). "L'homme armé" being another prime example.
The book looks great - but it's hellish expensive. If anyone knows where I can get Machaut virelai and other single melody lines in a form playable by treble recorder - apart from the ones a simple google search throws up - they would have my eternal gratitude.
