I'm a metal musician but even then I love more of the beat than the fast stuff, even when I love just, double pedal for 23 measures, I also love the slower beats that make you groove

This, as I hate to admit, makes a shit load of sense. There was this one time I used to play just grooves. Like, really groovy grooves. After a while I focussed on chops and played those on the kit. My friends were literally like bro what the f*** are you playing. The grooves were so good. And I was really taken aback because tbh, I worked my ass off to get chops down. So the fact that groove is preferred, seems a bit paradoxical lol
Only drummers can appreciate chops since they know how much skill and technique to pull it off while ordinary people can only comprehend what they hear.

Chops are great on their own, but when every other instrument is playing quarter notes and eighth notes, chops sound kind of like sh*t.
at the end of the day its all about being in sync. if you gotta drummer doing sick ass shit but everyone else is keeping up with it and is tight and in sync shit is still cool. its all about balance and knowing all things simple or complex has its place and when to use it is where the real fun comes into writing music.
