  • Hi Guys!!
In this video I'll be taking a look at my old Sony twin cassette player from back in the 90's.
The left deck is not playing a tape but the right one appears to be working fine.
Remember to approach with caution with electrical items... you should never work anywhere near internal power supplies even if the unit is not plugged into the mains!
I'm no expert I just like to take things apart!

The reason the capstan flywheel on deck a was spinning when deck b was playing is because both decks use a single motor. High end double decks usually have separate motors on each deck but cheaper decks use one motor to drive both decks. However even on Sony's high end decks it's common for the flywheel to spin when the machine is switched on even if you don't press play, it's just the heads, pinch roller and spindles don't engage until you do press play.
Replacing the belts on most 90s to 2000s Sony decks is usually pretty straightforward, plenty of TH-cam videos to help with that and it's worth doing with an old deck if it is in good condition and does what you want it to do. Motor noise can usually be dealt with by a tiny drop of oil on the shaft under the motor pulley and a very small amount of grease on the parts where metal rubs against metal or plastic rubs against metal also helps prolong the life of the deck, although make sure it's a plastic safe grease and don't get any on parts the tape touches.

If its working fine no need to touch it i normally get belts kit from mama tree the deck tech ones have been good quality if you do ever do belts avoid the large packs from china they are terrible.
