Good luck with the potential ice storm. Those photos brought back memories. I lived through the 1998 North Eastern Ice Storm, was living in Montreal, Quebec at the time. Much of the province, Ontario, Main and parts of New Brunswick lost power, some up to 6 months! We had freezingrain on and off for almost two weeks. Those huge towers that carry the bulk transmission lines? They accumulated upwards to 6 inches of ice, which caused over a 1,000 of them to fail and collapse! That is why some areas lost power for up to 6 months! They brought in diesel-elecric train engines to provide power in some areas while they were rebuilding the towers. They had to call out the Canadia Armed Forces, and it because the largest deployment of the military since the Korean War! Stay Safe and Warm!!
@@madman1124 I was in NDG. We had power most of the time, but it went out eventually. Ended up at a friends place who had a generator and a gas furnace and spent the rest of the event there. These days I am in Ottawa, the City that Fun Forgot. 😞
Living in Massachusetts I was just south of that mess. A lot of New Hampshire and Maine suffered extensive damage from that as well. Craziest was watching Mt Washington above the cold at 40 degrees and rain, with the valleys below at 25 and freezing rain. I got clobbered Dec. 2008, lost power for over a week. Had over 2 inches of ice accretion in 12 hours.
When they predict a massive snowmaggedon, you generally only get a skiff of snow. Be prepared for the lightly regarded storms. And since you're ready, it won't be bad. I'm getting the snow blower ready.
I was in the grocery business for 48 years a bit north of you. Every winter storm, everyone bought all the eggs, bread and milk we had. French toast day ? 30years ago, you could add cigarettes to that list.
Best wishes with the storm forecast Mr Ross - I hope you keep safe and well. Here in the UK it is sunny today but 0 degrees Celcius - due to be damp and wearm later in the week. Kind regards
I put a new carb on the generator I bought at a swap meet in 2018. No gas in it but it kicked back when I tried to start it with starting fluid and so I think it will run when I get it fully together. It's similarly sized to yours and the tank was originally full of water when I got it. It's Green but can't remember what brand it is but a decent one. 3500 watts, 5000 peak if it actually makes power when it runs. It does have a 20 amp plug.
@marcusdamberger Finally remembered, it's a old Coleman with a 10 hp Briggs on it. Got the Carb on Amazon when a deal came up and quickly threw it on to see if it'd try to run. Didn't have the choke hooked up either so when it kicked back I figured close enough and put the rest of the parts where I could find them.
Solid content and advice. I live in the Sandhills of NC, one inch of snow shuts down Fayetteville. Imagine six to eight inches with a re freeze at night. Ask Gabe I think he has witnessed this. Now if you head 125 miles north, it can be treacherous. I hope the weather is milder in your area and your Governor will alert/activate the NG and support the power grid. Hang in there and be safe. If you have the time, in one of your videos if you could explore the use of motor oil and transmission fluid as a furnace fuel for the shop especially since you are a recycler.
We used to use straight BG44K in our fuel injector press cleaner, it was amazing how quickly it worked, even on stuff that was cleaned with other treatments
I work on standby generators for a living and trust me you do not want a Generac. They are junk. Buy a Kohler Whole Home stand by generator. They are the best Home generators on the market.
It is winter, so snow and ice are to be expected. Get plenty of gasoline and be sure your snow thrower has air in the tires and clean motor oil. If you have a generator,, check to be sure it is working properly, stock up on foods, especially non perishables. You do not need to replace the UPS Unit unless your area was hit by a major power spike. That is the only thing that usually goes bad in the UPS other than the battery needing replacement. They make a winter wiper blade that will not freeze up. Also I buy Rain-X -25F Windows Washer Fluid ... You can find it a Walmart or Home Depot ... Work very well to clear snow or light ice on car windshields in winter.
some Casey's sell E0 gas, and if you look up pricing in the app you can tell before you go. Then find the pump with individual hoses so you don't need to flush the hose first. But as said by JR, if you don't "store" E10 gas in your small engines and run them dry when done it's less of a concern.
I got prepared for the STORM. I went out and bought a new broom..... to sweep the sun off the sidewalks! LOL. Don't get much snow or ice in Central Florida.
Sunday in Wichita is going to be a washout, with the day starting out at 32 degrees F and steadily decreasing. I suspect it is going to mostly be a snow event. Good luck!
Preparing here in Virginia too! This fall I bought a generator and wired it into the house. We had a derecho a few years ago that knocked out power to our area for weeks. Don’t ever want to be in that spot again.
Im lucky when in my country we usually has only max a day blackouts and the temp is not so bad this winter has been max -10C in the south region and we finally got some snow not only rain.
Man I love seeing network / tech content again ! Amazon needs to be made aware about those batteries being shipped like that. That could have been rally bad lol
Good luck JR, prayers for you and your family and Kansas and all the mid west. We’re just bracing for snow in NJ. A little bitch storm. 🤣 All our plow trucks are locked and loaded up with salt ready to go. Won’t amount to 💩 I say. Give me a blizzard baby!!! Stay safe sir!!! 👍🏻
I have the blank framed version 5500k and it's a beast! I've had it about 15 years or more and have never had to clean the carb. The damn thing is loud tho, they make a quit muffler which I bought after Ian came through my area and I had to listen to this loud thing for 3 weeks straight. Milton can't through and with the quiet muffler. It was better but still not great but the reliability of this thing has been unreal so I'll deal with the noise.
Natural gas-connected backup geni with 200 amp auto switch is absolutely the way to go. The installation costs are the most outrageous part of the expense, but you can obviously handle that yourself with your dad. We hardly, if at all, notice a power outage, no matter how long it lasts -- until the gas bill comes in, obviously
I have a 25KW natural gas Generac. During a hurricane here in Fort Lauderdale it ran for about 40 hours. I later calculated that it cost about $3.50 per hour to run. That doesn't sound like much, but if the power is out for a week, you are looking at close to $600 for the gas bill. Still better than being without power...
Warmest winter in recent memory here in Phoenix. Which is disappointing because after the two hottest summers on record back-to-back, I was kinda hoping it WOULD SNOW here! lol
I fired up my snowblower yesterday. Put gas in it and topped off the tires with air. Did an oil change last year on it and never fired it up once. So it's ready now.
@@smith6ar That just means you didn't get one the right size for your compound, not that they don't work. Or for something that big, likely multiple generators versus just one.
Yeah later today I need to install my whole house plug. My 9200 running watt Champion should run the heat pump no power but I've heard they are picky about non sinus wave power. AC at the old house wasn't happy but it worked.

You should park all the vehicles your not, I repeat not using outside and park the vehicle you will be using inside. Good luck and we’ll see you on the other side.

Of course, when it snows, I get right out there to clean the snow away from the garage door, no sense taking foolish chances.
I've had a Generac Guardian Generator for 10 years with no problems whatsoever. In the event of a power outage, the automatic transfer switch turns on the generator power in a few seconds live continues as if nothing ever happened!
