- In this episode of "Tell Me a Story," I chat with Kori Moncur, who shares his extraordinary journey of faith.
Born in the Bahamas and raised in Canada, Kori takes us through his upbringing in a predominantly Christian environment, his curiosity about religion, and the questions that led him on an unexpected path to Orthodox Judaism.
From learning Greek and Hebrew in high school to studying religious texts at university, Kori explains some of the philosophical and theological questions that shaped his path. He shares what it was like feeling like a cultural and religious outsider, his exploration of Judaism, and the challenges and rewards of converting to a new faith.
It was a privilege to listen to Kori’s story.
BTW: Kori's Hebrew name is Eliyahu Moshe!

Kori's high school was on a whole different level than my public high school. In fact, Kori's high school was more advanced than the state college from which I graduated. At college, many freshmen flunked out because they never studied, did not complete papers on time, and partied all the time. When I went to college, 18 year olds could drink alcohol and many took advantage of it. The ones who didn't drink, especially the Jewish students smoked pot. I heard some ate hash brownies. I was considered weird because I didn't drink, smoke, take drugs, or have sex.
wonderful store and journey...welcome to the tribe!
What high school offers study of Greek and Hebrew?
My public high school was down to Spanish and French and they were considering stopping that. I took all the Spanish they had from the two teachers. One teacher could barely speak Spanish.
As someone from the United States, I would love to know more about Judaism in Canada. I have heard that Reform Judaism in Canada is more traditional than in the United States and overall, Canadian Jews are less assimilated than Jews in the United States. Is this true?
I think it is great that Kori is true to himself while staying within halacha. Too many gerim go overboard, wear black clothes, follow many humros (stringencies), and pepper their conversation with mispronounced Hebrew and Yiddish words.
Most all baby boys of any religion, have a circumcision as a matter of routine in the hospital. Is it different in Canada? Is Canada like Europe where circumcision is rare among Christians?

40 pages? 700 questions?
I was born Jewish so I did not have to convert but Toronto bes din sounds too hard. Based on on some other videos, there are easier Orthodox conversions.
Are you an orthodox jew? If not, you have no say. We don't want people join us for the wrong reasons. Especially, that non jews have a perfect way to serve God by observing Noach laws.
