    I found your review today and as a semi-pro guitarist of 40+ years, I was debating whether or not a Glarry was worth it. My Takamine 12-string (1979 model) was taken back in 2016 and had been debating what kind of acoustic I could get to use for performing and writing songs with. Thank you for giving me some food for thought on the company.

    Great review hopefully Glarry is looking for real feedback and is listening. I'd hate for a company full of potential to fail 3 feet from the finish line. My Bigbaby Taylor is so old it was made in El Cajon California , and with it's solid Sitka top on it, it has actually improved with age. Not comparing it with anything else only from what it started out sounding like, and what it does now. For some that may or may not be something to take into consideration when shopping.

    • @BrianGossard
      @BrianGossard  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks man! I appreciate it. I’ve seen you before in my comments. Thanks for watching! So yeah, the baby Taylor... it’s interesting. It’s a nice enough guitar actually and I love mine. The only thing I have to say though is it’s a bit strange in the construction. It has no real kerfing. Instead it has these very thin pieces of wood that sort of hold the top to the sides. Mine has had the top come loose in places plenty of times because of that. I like it though I have to say a full size guitar beats it handily in terms of tone though.

    You should also keep an eye on the Indio brand (by Monoprice), they're making some great electrics in the $99 - $150 range, I just picked up a $99 Telecaster copy and the first thing that impressed me is that it appears to be setup well. Most cheap guitars come with incredibly bad setups.

    • @BrianGossard
      @BrianGossard  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I’ll have to look at them. This is definitely the most bizarre setup I’ve ever seen a guitar come with.

    Great review video. I‘ve never heard of Glarry, but I have seen other similar companies selling guitars for super cheap and have wondered how they are able to build them that way. Nice to see that you showed the good and the bad!

  • @80dale

    For the price it’s a great guitar. Actually a better low end than a Martin . I call it my baritone guitar. Intonation is spot on . I play it all the time and I have many more expensive guitars .
    Own two , first one was damaged (neck) so they sent me another . If you’re gonna nit-pic then just go spend $300.

    Very good review Brian. I've seen 8 million Glarry Strat copy reviews it seems, but this was the first acoustic review I've seen. I've gotta give one thing to this company. Unlike alot of the budget guitar companies out there, atleast Glarry is building and selling acoustics. It's easy to make a cheap electric guitar. A cheap acoustic however, is ALOT harder!

    • @BrianGossard
      @BrianGossard  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thank you. Yes, I give Glarry a lot of credit for what they’re doing despite the negatives I pointed out in the review. I think they have some interesting guitars for sale and at that price, it can be kind of fun if you know what to expect.

    This is a couch guitar, a camp guitar and one that honestly well exceeds the $99 it cost. Why? Because if you are a kid or someone who wants to learn to play here you go.
    But even more important is a cheap guitar is how EVERY SINGLE luthier learned to work on expensive ones. At least I did. I am not a luthier, but I can fix nearly anything short of building the guitar from scratch why?
    Cause I could only afford POS guitars when I started.. My favorite guitar is an old Rogue (price $0!) that the bridge flew off because it got wet. My repairs were pretty crappy, until I finally fixed it properly. It sits next to me and my couch as I type.
    To be honest, I love every one of the crappy guitars I have bought, most I saved, a few I couldn't. To this day look at the used rack for that crappy guitar just waiting to be repaired. I fix them, play them for a while then I give them to a kid or someone who wants to play. I forgot to say:
    Nice vid!

    Hey Brian, i have to say that sounded pretty good!, but i would suggest to a new player never buy a guitar you havent played. This comes from a guy who bought a Seagull S6 online with no touching of any guitars and started to learn to play. That was over 9 years ago and it took 3 setups over a couple years to fine tune the playablity where now plays like butter..
    A few years ago i went on vacation to Florida and didn’t take a guitar and regretted it. I went to GC and bought a Savanna Guitar. It was on sale at the time and payed 80 bucks. It was setup well and i played it for a week, then left in the rental house for others to enjoy kind of wish i would have kept it...

      I agree entirely! As someone who has made a guitar before, Its true tut each one will be different. To be honest, this Glarry was free to me for the review. That didn’t influence my opinion as you may have noticed. If Glarry is watching, hopefully they aren’t mad. I just have to be honest. But yes, every guitar and every piece of wood a guitar is made from will be different. Good points.

      Well that’s why my review is not totally negative. It sounds pretty good. The Glarry has a size advantage over the Taylor. My concern is that I think you could get a better made guitar from many other companies for the same price. It sounds okay, but that build quality is a problem. There’s just no way around it.

    hell I bought one of those 60 dollars glarry guitars and they actually, come with a adjustable truss rod in the neck. most cheap guitars used to never come, with any adjustment other than string tension!. other than the action being a little high it a nice guitar for being so cheap. and it makes a good cheap project to play with and make changes because they have a nice sound.

    I'll agree. Baby Taylor's sound like a cheese grader ... I was searching for a 3/4 guitar to take with me .
    I was in the shoppe and tested it against the Martin Jr. and although the Martin Jr played better it didn't really sound better.. They were both plywood tops.. and the Baby Taylor's neck was so narrow that chords were almost impossible to make at the nut end..
    For about 1/3 the price of the Martin and the Taylor was the Luna ...
    It has a solid spruce top .. a great action, and sounds almost as good as a full scale OM .. It came with an undersaddle Pickup that sounded just like a Fisherman.. $189 out the door..
    Martin and Taylor rely on their name to sell their lower priced junky guitars and make them with plywood... 3/4 are a struggle to get to sound good because of their size and a plywood top just makes that an impossibility..
    That said.. a full size Jasmine by Takameme doesn't sound too bad ... with it's ply top .. but it's a full size dreadnought and that gives the top room to vibrate..
    I own 2 Lunas now. Because I liked the smaller one so well I bought a 400 dollar full size cutaway ..that was a factory blem so i got it for 300 ... I did a setup and the action was so good I leave my Martin Dm at home and play the Luna on stage. It came from the factory setup pretty darn good .. the 15th fret was a lille high.. thats it..
    A 300 dollar over a 900+ guitar...

    You do understand that when they "send" or provide you a guitar for a review - it will have been one of the best ones that they have looked over prior to sending. I wish that reviewers would purchase the guitar, in order to get a more accurate sample.

    • @BrianGossard
      @BrianGossard  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Actually I have to disagree here. Glarry doesn’t seem to have the infrastructure to send specific better grade guitars to reviewers. If they did, they certainly wouldn’t have sent me one with the obvious flaws present in this one. I’ve also seen plenty of other TH-camrs talk about being sent bad copies by Glarry for review and then being sent a replacement. Clearly they aren’t earmarking these review copies.

    I have a trick & can take cheap guitars & re-scallop the braces and have it sound like a much more expensive guitar. Just as long as the top tone wood is solid and half-decent. I do not have to take the top or back off. I’ve heard these Glarry guitars have shipping problems in the past. So, buyer beware. That Glarry looks like it has a bolted-on bridge. So, if the bolts loosen from vibration you’ll have issues. The bracing inside this guitar is HORRIBLE! For another $50 you could get a Washburn that is fantastic. Zebrawood is not a good tonewood, plus it’s heavy.

    I'd just like to point to the guitars my family has owned for comparison. My Giannini GNF-8R CEQ NS (here's a review of it: th-cam.com/video/_4p6EsVL7EI/w-d-xo.html) came with some spots of glue pilled on it, damage from shipping, we theorise, and my sister's Strinberg came absolutely unplayable, with these heavy strings hanging way too high, easily by some 50-75mm, also being waaay too heavy. Though it sounded great, it didn't feel it. I replaced the strings for lighter ones after having a luthier pulling the strings down to a reasonable height didn't do enough. That then gave it the same height issue your guitar came with, and, before i could take it to have it fixed again, my dad bumped into it and it fell forward onto carpet, breaking off the head. I'll take it to get fixed eventually, but the point is that that guitar took months to set up and it never even got to play well. If yours had light damage (and could be replaced at no cost, like the lady said) and only needed one trip to the luthier, while beign slightly cheaper than even my guitars, then that's all good and borderline expected, from my experience! Maybe i was just unlucky with the Strinberg - my Giannini didn't need setting up, after all, and neither did my Epiphone Les Paul 100 (though that's electric, so, yeah. Here's a review anyways: th-cam.com/video/hZNyxeKD5Dg/w-d-xo.html).
    The finishing on everything i've owned is way better, though. And i do mean WAY better. Hell, the one thing i cannot complain about the Strinberg is the finish and beauty - it was a gorgeous guitar! And my Giannini has gotten complements, too.

    • @BrianGossard
      @BrianGossard  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would say it does sound like you were pretty unlucky with that guitar. Where I’m coming from, just so you understand is, I’ve bought a lot of inexpensive guitars (for myself and for my work as a teacher) and I haven’t seen the kind of issues I saw in the Glarry from most companies at that same price point. I think it’s a good guitar in concept, but I’d like to see the quality control live up to it. I honestly don’t have any hard feelings here. I like the guitar overall. That said, I have to be honest with my viewers so I tried to present both sides. Btw, I watched your review. You’re a very good player!

    • @lorenzo_br5803
      @lorenzo_br5803 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Brian Gossard Oh, it’s not me playing, they’re just reviews i’ve found of the guitars i own! But they are very good reviews!
      I had imagined it was bad luck too, a friend has had way better experiences with his Strinbergs, but it was worth pointing out, as it was more expensive than this Glarry while also having issues with playability out of the box (although not with finish and quality control, that Strinberg is/was absolutely beautiful). And, conversely, i know people with worst experiences with their Gianninis. I don’t know which of my cases were plain luck or actual quality control failures or successes, but i agree with you that it’s probably the latter for the Glary, that finishing is truly bad. However, here’s my experiences for what they’re worth!

    • @BrianGossard
      @BrianGossard  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks. I think we’re on the same page on this one. It’s not uncommon for a cheap guitar to need a setup, or to have a small blemish here and there. It’s just that this Glarry seemed to have more of these issues than you would normally expect. I would be inclined to say maybe this was a bad one, except for all of the other TH-cam reviews I’ve watched that tell similar stories.
