The 8th Annual Dillinger Block Party:
Every 2nd Saturday in May we shut down a couple blocks in the heart of Boulder City's picturesque downtown and throw a big block party. Access to the block party is free and all-ages. This year's event is on Saturday, May 11th from 3pm-2am. Featuring live bands, vinyl DJs, food trucks, vendors, and hilarious attractions like the Best Dog on the Block Contest, Dad Noise Competition, and Beer Drink Contest, this will be a party like none other! The block party also serves as a fundraiser for the nonprofit Shane Patton Foundation, which provides scholarships to local high school students. This event is the final destination on a city-wide Historic Preservation Day Celebration. At 3:30 there will be a parade led by the BCHS Marching Band down California Street (BC's original parade route) that will end in front of the stage.

According to Wikipedia, he suffered a stroke in 2017. However, this performance is in 2018. Together with the fact that he had a partial leg amputation in the 60’s, this performance is quite remarkable! Hats off to you Sandy ❤️

This adds a lot of context. Good on him for not letting that slow him down. As a drummer I was thinking he was having some timing issues. Knowing that he survived that and is still playing is actually awe inspiring.

Sandy Nelson was A big influence on my playing. He had a great melodic feel to his drumming. Thank you Sandy for sharing your gift to the world. Music is emotions in sound, and Sandy’s music expressed love, peace, joy, happiness, friendship and he had FUN playing and we had FUN watching him play.

I am just a beginner but I can see why he is so highly regarded. He did indeed have a wonderful melodic feel that one rarely finds the days. Not, of course, that modern percussionists don't have the chops, rather that that style of percussive musicality does not seem to be in vogue.
I recently listened to his Drums for Drummers Only arrangement and was left slack-jawed how he worked the high- hat so steadily for 12 straight minutes.
I just seriously admire his smooth melodic style.

Sandy, if you’re out there and listening; Back in 1976 you stopped by the Palomino (in Hollywood) during a break in our show. I enjoyed
‘tremendously’, the chance to talk with you. Just the same; I kept apologizing because I picked your brain (almost to the point of being
discourteous) on your drum and recording techniques and you were more than courteous with your time and it was sincerely appreciated!
As often was the case, we would share the stage with Jan & Dean but on that night, the Surfaris shared the stage with us, which afforded me the chance to visit with you.
To my surprise; even Governor Jerry Brown stopped by. It was amazing just how many people who enjoyed listening to Dick Dale, which was also how much I enjoyed your recordings.
Thank you and I wish you well,
    Les Roberts

Sandy Nelson, was a super kool inspiration to me as a 13 year old drummer wannabe. He was unique because his albums were drum instrumentals! Huh? How kool is that. The drummer was out front! Self taught by ear he was a dream come true for me.
No TH-cam videos in that era. To see him still rocking it until he passed this year was so great. I am 66 and still killing it with my fellow band of classic rock brethren .Fossil relics that can still rock. Thank you Sandy. RIP!

As a kid and a young drummer (13), I practiced his stuff a lot. Then years later I started to communicate with Preston Ritter, the drummer for the Electric Pruns. Preston knew Sandy and spent time with him. Preston passed away several years ago.
I went on to open for some big named groups such as Canned Heat, Buddy Miles, Elvin Bishop and Fleetwood Mac to name a few. Musicians love to name drop, don't we?

watched a video of sandy some time ago, here's a man far up in years now, living in a dark run down, low rent apartment in calif, alone and having to use a kids set that was gave to him, its a shame, for here is a man who made dozens of LP records, 45 rpm, records, hundreds of live gigs and shows to his credit,, and hes almost a unknown now days, ive' seen the videos where the younger set yawn and look bored as hell as he drums away, only us from the by gone days still know and love what he does, some day he will be gone like gene Krupa, buddy rich, Cozy cole' and there style of drumming will vanish, except if ones lucky to find recording of there work, while there are fine drummers out there today, the old style i grew up to and learned, replaced by head bangers and gear busters who play loud and aggressive but with no passion.

Awesome to see Sandy still goin' at it in his early 80s. His swing/surf style of instrumental drumming (and also "Wipeout" by The Surfaris) were the two reasons that I took up the drums at age twelve. If memory serves, Sandy was a big influence on the Beach Boys drummer Dennis Wilson back in the day, as Wilson paid homage to Nelson with "Denny's Drums" on the BB's "Shut Down, Vol. II" album. 😄👍✌🇺🇸

Sandy played before very big crowds in the early sixties and was a huge influence on drummers..

Great drummer, always was -- he was 80 years old in this video. Still quite good, no arthritis here. The late Sandy (d. 2018) had the rare ability to be a good rock drummer & modern jazz drummer. He was indeed a session drummer like Hal Blaine & had a long career playing on many early rock hits. Was one of the few drummers who issued solo albums & his "Let There Be Drums," was a hit.
