I understand that disliking Mitsunari influenced many of them but it’s kinda sad how so many Toyotomi Loyalists took Ieyasu’s side. At least a lot of them didn’t live to see Osaka to see the results of their allegiance at Sekighara. I don’t know why but adaptations of Ieyasu always lead me to prefer Mitsunari(who despite adaptations showing people don’t get along with him, they do this usually by making kiyomasa and masanori unreasonable and hot headed).
7:29 - This. This was also applicable back when Hideyoshi himself took control away from the Oda heirs, post Nobunaga. There was a LOT at stake, more than just inheritance. The state of Sengoku Jidai must've been absolutely horrendous, an unending hell for the people of the land in general. Barely surviving somehow, burdened by crushing taxes to fund constant warring that for the most part only led to ephemeral accomplishments. While all around them armies tramped, pillaged and ravaged. On top of that, if something like the Mongol invasion had happened again, before Nobunaga had brought in a semblance of cohesion to central Japan, then the Japanese would've been fucked. The country absolutely could not be allowed to slide back into the diffused chaos of the first half of the Sengoku Jidai. Someone of that caliber just had to take the reins and keep the country bound. IMO, I think the key point of Ieyasu's achievements as a unifier lay in that he ensured that the new unified regime would persist even if a man of his calibre no longer remained to take the reigns. Something which Hideyoshi, while completing the work Nobunaga started, failed to accomplish.

@@Yusa_Beach Yukimura Sanada’s bravery impressed Tokugawa Ieyasu so much that he called him the greatest samurai of the land. A discussion regarding the House of Sanada should be established since they had been somehow involved in the larger picture of the Sengoku Jidai with their service to the Takeda Clan, their countless flip flopping allegiances towards other major clans, their two instances of brave defiance against the Tokugawa at Ueda Castle (the second one which delayed Tokugawa Hidetada big time from joining the war at Sekigahara), the brilliant plan to split the family in half in the Tokugawa-Ishida conflict to ensure their survival and finally, the last stand of Yukimura Sanada
@@james-97209 Sawayama Castle was strategically important being on the main road from Kyoto to the east and also being of the castles near the Sekigahara pass which was a natural choke point between Gifu and Kyoto (there's a reason that the battle happened there as well as Nobunaga's battles against the Azai, and Hideyoshi's battles against Shibata were in the same general area). The area was so important that after Ishida's death the castle was given to one of Tokugawa's closest retainers Ii Naomasa who tore it down and made Hikone castle in the city nearby. Shima Sakon was regarded as a superb general who Ishida Mitsunari allegedly was paying a large portion of own salary to retain the services of. Since Mitsunari was considered to be a mediocre military commander and mostly just a pencil pushing bureaucrat no one liked having those two things gave him outsized personal weight to throw around.

Ieyasu using his almost-mythical powers of patience to wait for the perfect moment to strike, while gathering strength on the meanwhile. I can't help but feel bad for Mitsunari, mostly because he was my introduction to my interest in the Sengoku Jidai as my first character in Samurai Warriors 2 (silly, yes, but I have start somewhere), but I do feel like his intentions were honest, he owned much to Hideyoshi and worked to protect his legacy, or at least that's how I see it. Shame he was so outclassed by Ieyasu, I can't help but wonder how history would go had he made better choices.
Mitsunari isn’t a frontline commander while Ieyasu has rich experience when it comes to fighting battles, having fought beside Imagawa Yoshimoto and Oda Nobunaga as well as engaging in his indivdual campaigns as well as waging war against Toyotomi Hideyoshi.
I wonder why the Shimazu didn’t side with Ieyasu! Since Hideyoshi decided to “defend” the otomo and take away the shimazu authority after they finally United their island.
I honestly believe the Shimazu saw an opportunity to regain control of Kyushu by siding with Mitsunari. Mitsunari wasn’t a good leader if he had won the Sengoku Jidai would’ve continued.
@@Hilversumborn surely they would have recognized that the western army wasn’t going to win especially without their own army to reinforce it. Remaining neutral or siding with the Tokugawa seemed like the obvious option.
@@user-ss8wh4kk3m The Shimazu specialized in fighting opponents who outnumbered them. Once again maybe the Shimazu hoped that the clash would plunge the land into chaos once more allowing them for another opportunity to conquer Kyushu.
@@Hilversumborn I get that but it just doesn’t seem like the reasonable decision. Without the Shimazu, the western army is even more likely to fail. Not to mention all of the distrust that had to have been known amongst all of Mitsunari’s allies. There just seems like too many risks for them to engage in the power struggle.
Many people said is ironic how the Toyotomi suffered the similar fate of the Oda. But, I think Ieyasu was more devious. When Oda Nobunaga and his son died, it was so sudden that there were no instruction of what to do next if Nobunaga had perished. Come on, there was a fight about who will be the Oda leader because there were no a designated successor. That's why Hideyoshi could make his move, and he wasn't the only one who tried the same. I won't believe Ieyasu participated in Komaki-Nagakute just because he was eager to help the Oda and stand against Hideyoshi's rising power; that was just a excuse. And even when Hideyoshi had the power in his hands after that battle, he didn't extinguished all the Oda clan. If I'm not mistaken, Hideyoshi even wanted to save Oichi, sister of Nobunaga, from dying when having defeated Shibata Katsuie, but she chose to died with his second husband. Ieyasu was more treacherous. He was given instructions of what to do after Hideyoshi died, but disobeyed. He planned plot after plot, and even when he won at Sekigahara, he tried to find an excuse to exterminate the Toyotomi. The Incident of Hokouji Temple Bell is perhaps the most absurd reason I heard in Sengoku Era for initiating a war, and that was what Ieyasu did to declare the war to the Toyotomi. I just don't find Ieyasu as appealing as Nobunaga or Hideyoshi... I know these two weren't saints at all, but at least they made their own achievements to unite the country. Nobunaga started the unification, and Hideyoshi finished the job, it's a shame he was too worried about his linage and made some wrong decisions... But Ieyasu? He threw the country in another war and then claimed he finished the unification. It's like the hero who claims he fixed the problem when he was the one who caused it in the first place. I'm going to say it in my native language: Ese maldito tanuki... What a good video, by the way! I'm looking forward to the next one!
man... i think you should read or watch more vidoes outside this channel so you can understand from ieyasu perspective.. " I won't believe Ieyasu participated in Komaki-Nagakute just because he was eager to help the Oda and stand against Hideyoshi's rising power; that was just a excuse". Then what make you think Hideyoshi is the good guy? or different than Shibata or Ieyasu, just because he killed Akechi? If ieyasu not in threat of danger he already killed akechi as well but he pronvice is too far (dont forget Honoji incident happend because Nobunaga want to throw a party with ieyasu for they long relationship). Ieyasu decided to support the eldest surviving son while Hideyoshi support a baby so he can gain his time to consolidate his power (and which is true at the end right?). "he didn't extinguished all the Oda clan. If I'm not mistaken, Hideyoshi even wanted to save Oichi" Of course he didn't extinguished Oda clan, it would be fool political move for him. and you know why Oichi refused hideyoshi offer and better die with her husband? "Ieyasu was more treacherous. He was given instructions of what to do after Hideyoshi died, but disobeyed" again, its not that simple.. since Komaki and Nagakute Ieyasu and Hideyoshi is already being a great rival and dont forget after ieyasu help hideyoshi on Odawara campaign, he kicked ieyasu from his ancestral land and moved him in the kanto region. Sure Kanto region is rich but if you trust Hideyoshi and think this as "Reward" then you wrong, it just cunning move from hideyoshi to weakened tokugawa clan. If ieyasu refused "Generous" offers by hideyoshi he will count as a rebel and hideyoshi have a reason to eliminate tokugawa clan. "He planned plot after plot" Ha! said that to mitsunari.. he doing plot against Ieyasu, he even planned to tokugawa assinated. but Ieyasu found out the plot and guess what? Ieyasu spare him but mitsunari still keep continue his scheming... Tokugawa Ieyasu just act for survival his clan and that lead to sekigahara. In fact not many daimyo in western army royal to mitsunari, in battle sekigahara lot of them just stood there and watched even refused mitsunari order.without tokugawa or sekigahara, there will be another longer civil war especially in the western side. Remember all of this chaos (Onin and Sengoku) because Shogun doesnt have influence to stop it, after Ieyasu won he try to remove any threat that can sparks another war in the feature.
@@fher_id I have read and watched much more things, and still I just can't stand Ieyasu. I also said neither Nobunaga and Hideyoshi weren't saints (of course they weren't, there are reasons why these two have been vilified in fiction so many times), but I do find them more appealing. While I think some of their methods were rather extreme or even disloyal, Ieyasu took those up eleven. And when did I say something about Kanto region? And how that weakened Tokugawa clan? Actually giving him Kanto was a wrong move from Hideyoshi, since that gave Ieyasu even more power than before. It was not like the moves made on Chousokabe Motochika about Shikoku, or on Shimazu Yoshihiro about Kyuushuu. About Shibata Katsuie, I actually don't have an opinion about him, only that he was a good warrior. Yes, Mitsunari plotted too against Ieyasu, but the first one who initiated was Ieyasu himself. Sorry, but I just don't like the "Ieyasu was the best guy of the three unifiers" narrative that I have heard many times before. I stand with what I said before: Ieyasu just claimed what Nobunaga and Hideyoshi actually achieved.
@@azarishiba2559 what i mean i feel like you dont acknowledge what Tokugawa achieve or have been through. After Komaki-Nagakute Hideyoshi have rivalry with Ieyasu and trying to eliminate him, but he just cant.. so the best he can do just weakened them. By intrude internal conflict Tokugawa in Ueda and force Ieyasu to move his main domain to recently annex region from the Hojo. ofcourse this would weakened Tokugawa clan for a moment and one of the reason why Tokugawa cant give much men to Korea. Ieyasu is briliant administrator thats why he can get rich so fast. i dont say Ieyasu is the best guy of the three unifiers, they are equaly good which have their own pros and cons.. i think what you said is little bit unfair "he was too worried about his linage and made some wrong decisions... But Ieyasu? He threw the country in another war and then claimed he finished the unification" Tokugawa already been in the begining since the raise of Oda clan. He the most royal allies and help a lot in many Oda campaign when Nobunaga try to unification the land. He one of the most respected daimyo and the reason why a lot clan support him. with or without Ieyasu, under mitsunari 'regent' is likely another civil war would come. like you said Hideyoshi made a mistake and Ieyasu try to fix it. there is the reason why it called The THREE Unifiers of Japan and not one.

A lot of them were probably soured on the toyotomi because, of the imjin war and that Hideyori was a child
Mitsunari was very bad at diplomacy, ironic given his service under Hideyoshi who was excellent at it.
Ah wonderful, a new shogunate video in a wonderfully done series whilst I sip tea and have a warm bath on a Sunday morning
hands down this series one of the best things in youtube
The rice cake is about to be ready.
What surprised me the most is that a lot of Hideyoshi's family supported the Eastern army. Like His first wife Nene.
Because she hate Lady Yodo
To be fair most record about lady nene support eastern army come from secondary source meanwhile she have family relation with both mitsunari and hideie
6:00 Ieyasu's "lineage" was dubious and made up to satisfy the Minamoto requirement for the eligibility of the position of shogun.
The lord of Daimyos, part 3: The return of shogun!
Yes, i notice the reference from Galadriel in the Fellowship of the ring, nerds!😜👍
A moron surprises his opposition and rules with an iron fist and unorthodox stratagems
A lowly peasant slowly rises to the big time by being an opportunistic, scheming individual
A boy who used to be a hostage and an unwilling vassal who rose to the top by being careful in his every move
XD
YESSSSSS FINALLY, Can't wait for Sekigahara to be one step closer.
Let us not also forget the last stand of Sanada Yukimura when he defiantly made a move to cut Ieyasu down
@@michaelbandada9887 Yes, definitely that too, The downfall of the Toyotomi and the brave samurai who defended Osaka castle till their last breath.
Awesome content,love your channel...
Thanks for your videos :)
Anybody notice the Lord of The Rings quote?? 👍 Love this guy.
2:10
Yup
You magnificent person!!!! I am a lord of the rings nerd and I didn't notice it. SHAMEFUL DISPRAY
It's said that Mitsunari had 2 things in his favor he didn't deserve: Sawayama Castle and Shima Sakon as a retainer.
当時の落首に「三成に過ぎたるものが二つあり 島の左近と佐和山の城」
Can you please elaborate?
Toyotomi Hideyori was born just at the wrong time and was too young to control japan's daimyo. Had Hideyoshi not gotten ridden of his much older heir the clan would have probably survived.
At least he’s got a mother who’s willing to ensure that her son will remain in charge at all cost and she will even be the regent if she desires to do so.
The woman in question would be Lady Chacha who is of noble lineage since her parents are Lady Oichi and Azai Nagamasa and her uncle is the infamous Oda Nobunaga
Shrewd that the Tokugawa kept out of the Imjin War.
I was waiting for this for an entire month
The time has finnaly come
Thanks Shogunate :)
Can't wait for the great conclusion that is the battle of Sekigahara and the siege of Osaka
Its going to be cool to see the Edo period!
@@sengokusanada2690 Oh it's you again :)
And yes I agree
Good insight into the mind and motivations of Ieyasu.
I could've sworn i was already subscribed, weird how that happens.
I would love to learn more about Maeda Toshiie
Me too!
Me three
Ieyasu: trying to start shit
Mitsunari: not on MY watch mothafucka
All roads lead to Sekigahara.
For the Toyotomi to suffer a similar fate as what Hideoshi did to the Oda is ironic.
Except Hideyoshi never extinguished the Oda.
The Tanuki vs the Kitsune
why this video dont have auto subtitle?
If only Mitsunari could’ve been tad bit friendlier, he might have won
Mitsunari isn’t a frontline commander while Ieyasu has rich experience when it comes to fighting battles, having fought beside Imagawa Yoshimoto and Oda Nobunaga as well as engaging in his indivdual campaigns as well as waging war against Toyotomi Hideyoshi.
Mitsunari could be downright idiotic when it comes to military matters. Look at the Siege of Haengju, for example.
Nice video 👍🏻
Do you have a good book on how the hierarchy of samurais fell and became bakufus and yakuzas? The overall modernization of such classes per say
If I'm not mistaken, Hideyoshi even wanted to save Oichi"
Of course he didn't extinguished Oda clan, it would be fool political move for him. and you know why Oichi refused hideyoshi offer and better die with her husband?
"Ieyasu was more treacherous. He was given instructions of what to do after Hideyoshi died, but disobeyed"
again, its not that simple..
since Komaki and Nagakute Ieyasu and Hideyoshi is already being a great rival and dont forget after ieyasu help hideyoshi on Odawara campaign, he kicked ieyasu from his ancestral land and moved him in the kanto region.
Ieyasu is briliant administrator thats why he can get rich so fast.
i dont say Ieyasu is the best guy of the three unifiers, they are equaly good which have their own pros and cons.. i think what you said is little bit unfair
"he was too worried about his linage and made some wrong decisions... But Ieyasu? He threw the country in another war and then claimed he finished the unification"
Tokugawa already been in the begining since the raise of Oda clan.
@@fher_id Or two XD XD
I can't deny that Ieyasu had some good qualities and that he made actually some good decisions, especially regarding the establishment of Edo Shogunate. But still, I · JUST · CAN'T · STAND · HIM. My reasons for doing so are rather subjective, so this opinion of mine is very unlikely to change, sorry n_ñU
Would you do a series on the conquests of the tokugawa shogunate in Hokkaido and the Okinawa islands
We will get into those topics
After the Battle of Sekigahara video? Are you thinking of reviewing Aoi Tokugawa Sendai?
Ieyasu just played Mitsunari like a damn fiddle. It's the law of nature that the smart one will be using those who dumb.
James Clavell's nover Shogun was such an awesome depiction of these events.
Easily in my top 10 novels.
The tanuki plays his hand.
Sekigahara is near!
So begins the rise of the Tokugawa clan.
Thier rise began in 1590 for me when Ieyasu was given the 8 Kanto province's which belonged to the once great Go-Hojo clan but I get what you mean
They’ve been rising since 1560.
Interesting choice of words saying unfortunately the assassination attempt failed. Somebody get the shinsengumi on this guy 😜

Mitsunari is juz a paper 📄 pusher. Aiyah if Kato is on his side, he may have had a better change.
I can see sekigahara!
I really wonder how things would have went if mitsunari was killed during the attack on him in the Capital. Who would have been Iyeasu’s enemy then??
Probably Mori Terumoto.
@@harukrentz435 sekigahara would have been so much different if Terumoto was in charge
It's quite amusing really is Hideyoshi would have just have Ieyasu killed this would never have happened still I prefer Ieyasu to the Toyotomi anyways.
So team west or team east?
흠...
🇧🇷👏👏👏
Tobagawa won this easily cuz nobody else now if the hojo clan we're still around then we can probably debate about it Boulder rat made it to many mistakes and he didn't think about the bigger picture
Not a fan of Hideyoshi or Ieyasu if I'm being honest 😕
I like Nobunaga a lot more!
