  • After a very excited wait, I have been listening to the first of the brand new Acoustic Sounds Atlantic 75 series audiophile LPs. This absolutely superb new Chris Bellman all-analogue cut is presented on 2x45rpm LPs pressed at the world's number one (in my opinion) pressing plant: QRP.
    To put this superb release into perspective, and to fully appreciate the awesomeness of Phil Collins' first solo album, I compare the new Acoustic Sounds release with my 1981 purchased on day-of-release UK original LP.
    I purchased my copy of Face Value direct from Acoustic Sounds at: store.acousticsounds.com/d/17...

    Fantastic review Dave! I was also blown away by this cut, just a stunning release! The low noise floor is wonderful for the quieter tracks to reveal details and subtleties.

      I was waiting for Selling England to reach UK retailers as it saves a few pounds (£), however on the strength of this release I've ordered it direct from Acoustic Sounds and preordered The Lamb while I'm at it...

    I wasn’t sure if I needed a £75 copy of this album as I had played it to death a lot many years ago and having re listened it today I really need to hear Droned on this remaster..! Just for the wow factor.. as ever I enjoy your deep dive into all album reviews thanks Dave.

    This is my only copy of this album but always wanted a really good copy of In The Air Tonight, this is the cut that’s made me truly aware of what people mean when they say “sparkly top end”, while not being bright at all, I mean it’s not subtle, it stands out so much from any other pressing I have of any album quite frankly, and that’s pitting it against One Steps. The balance of the frequencies, the prominence of the voice, the soundstage, everything just came together remarkably well, it’s a profoundly great copy, definitely a standout in my collection.

    I’ve lived with this copy for the best part of two weeks and can only concur with your excellent video. Surprisingly, it’s the first time I’ve owned a copy, back in the day everyone had it so I’ve always known it well and have streamed it occasionally since the onset of the streaming era. To finally get a copy, a new one was seemingly impossible prior to this, is fantastic in itself, but as you observe AS have produced an absolutely stunning cut of this pop/rock classic; but that’s what they do. I’m hardly adverse to all the extra trips to my deck to flip it over, but it does add two additional unexpected and unwanted breaks to the program. This leaves you with a slight feeling of unfinished business. In other words, one break to turn a single album over is my preference. However, it’s a minor annoyance that I happily overlook in the case of an album such as this which possesses such staggering fidelity. Clearly this bodes well for what is coming our way over the next few months and I imagine explains why my order for “Selling England by the Pound” is already in. Beyond that on the Genesis front, all I know is that they are doing “the lamb“ and regrettably not “Wind and Wuthering”.
    There is apparently no Led Zeppelin forthcoming in the AS series so I have just bought Atlantics own 75th anniversary clear vinyl copy of the untitled 4th album which is good but nothing to write home to the mothership about. For sometime now, I have suspected that Chad might be in some ongoing talks regarding either the turn of the century Zeppelin cuts before they acquired Classic Records or even a new set from scratch. It is the labels 75th anniversary, and I just don’t buy the fact that the band who headlined Atlantic at 40 and the Ahmet Ertigun tribute are going to remain somewhat trivialised in these proceedings. So it could be a very good time to be a zeppelin fan providing enough cash can be squeezed into Jimmy’s bank account to loan out the masters and relinquish control so that AS/AP might sprinkle their magical dust for a limited series.. 🤞

      You're right; it's a shame they're not doing 'Wind & Wuthering': I'd have definitely bought that. My UK original is a bit thin and bright, similar sounding to 'And Then There Were Three'. I'm sure both of these could've been improved massively by the Analogue Productions treatment.
      Personally I'd have chosen these two in place of 'Genesis' and 'Abacab'.

      Wasn’t Wind & Wuthering on a different record label originally? I recall seeing the original issue on MCA here in America and later reissued on either ATCO or Atlantic later on.

    As I get older I want warmer not brighter, so I was impressed with the neon lights analogy. I will stick with my original, but what drew me in, and down memory lane was your first Gabriel concert. Mine was at Brunel university , student bar. watched Genesis with 50 other people. At "half time" Peter stepped off the stage ( wooden plinth 3 inches above the beer stained floor) and he went to the loo just as i did. He stood next to me, we nodded. He was wearing that red dress with the fox head hat (real fox). The 75 series I am looking forward to and intrigued about is the transition album, A trick of the Tail. It runs at over 51 minutes so is quite compressed. There is some really complex passages which should be "revealed" on 45

      Hi Roger, thanks for sharing your story, How awesome that is. I've found myself standing peeing next to Martin Carthy before now, and on another occasion Jeff Beck opened the 'gents' door for me.
      I agree about A Trick Of The Tail, my go-to copy is an 80s MOFI which sounds great. But I am sure the Atlantic 75 will blow it away.

    The gated drum sound was I believe an accident, the studio (Townhouse?) had just had new mikes installed including one in the ceiling so that the producers could speak to the musicians and hear the response. During the recording of this album the studio ceiling mike was left on or "open" and this extra sound was fed back to the recording adding the depth we all now know.

    • @audiotomb
      @audiotomb 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      They used gated drums first on Gabriel’s Intruder
      Bowie used a gated vocal on Heroes down a long hallway

    I agree with your analysis re 'neon' which left me slightly disappointed i.e. overly prominent high end in places which at times became unpleasant to listen to. Yes, there is a lot to like too but unlike you, I find it hard to get over the brightness. I also feel the 45rpm format may be playing a role here: I have around fifty 45rpm 12 inch singles which all sound better than the 33rpm equivalent but they are generally brighter. The dynamic range is also more noticeable in the 45rpm format and I think this is the case for the Face Value pressing.

    • @DaveDenyer
      @DaveDenyer  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      45rpm is without question 'better', technically, however how the cutting engineer deals with that can make the difference. Theres no reason why they should be brighter...

    Hi Dave - I think Collins signed with Virgin Records for this (even though Ahmet Ertegun was a little involved) - so it is a little strange to view this inside an Atlantic 75 series maybe ...

    • @DaveDenyer
      @DaveDenyer  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Arne, I agree it's a little strange as I always think of Genesis being on Charisma (now part of Virgin) and Peter, Mike, Tony, & Steve's solo projects were all on Charisma (here in the UK). I'm still getting used to Genesis being included in this series because I always think of them as Charisma artists...
