Leonard wrote hundreds of songs, but “The Partisan” stands out as it is not one of his compositions. It was written in 1943 by a Russian woman Anna Marley and Frenchman Emmanuel d’Astier de la Vigerie. The song was later given English lyrics by Hy Zaret. The song is an anti-fascist anthem about the French Resistance against the Nazi’s during World War Two. This is why Leonard performs the song using both languages. My favourite version of the song is the one on Leonard’s Live in Dublin album recorded in September 2013.
Ciao
Greetings from Leonard's home, Canada. "J'ai tant d'amis- J'ai la France entiére." "I have so many friends- I have the whole of France." Peace, love and bellbottoms.
I discovered Leonard Cohen when a teenager back in the 60’s. So much brilliant music in Britain back then but his soul shone through and stays with me to this day. A true poet.
Between Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan, my generation has been amply blessed with masterful storytellers, poets and prophets. Leonard's library of songs is a very very deep rabbit hole. Even "Hallelujah," which has been covered so often, has way more verses than are usually recorded. And after you leave the songs, there is all that poetry. All that poetry from one artist... try Who By Fire, Everybody Knows, A Thousand Kisses Deep, Closing Time, The Stranger, So Long, Marianne, Suzanne, Love Itself, First, We Take Manhattan, Famous Blue Raincoat, Hey, That's No Way To Say Goodbye, I'm Your Man. I'm still just scratching the surface.
Speaking of stoic performer on stage: I saw Leonard Cohen live and he sang his whole concert with one hand over his heart and didn't move from behind the mike the whole time. And it was one of the best concerts I've ever been to.
… and to think that he didn’t believe he had an amazing voice… I get goosebumps every time I listen to him. ❤ He’ll always be my favorite artist. Now he’s singing to the angels ❤
Finally, a Leonard Cohen reaction. However, this is one of the few songs that are not written by him. Check out "Suzanne", his first ever song, and then go on from there. There is much to discover.
I like the studio version more because he was quite Young when he recorded it and his voice was very different. But you really couldn't pick a better song than this
Thanks to Kurt Cobain and Nirvana for introducing me to Leonard Cohen, he has become one of my favorite artist, wether it's his books, poetry or music ❤🎉❤
Thanks for watching. Most of my requests come from here and I also read the comments below. If you want to support the show you can do that here www.patreon.com/poloreacts or show your love for the channel by buying me a coffee using this link www.buymeacoffee.com/poloreacts
My partner's (rip) father was one of these from Romania He joined the Foreign Legion and after WW2 fought in Algeria and then Vietnam ending up in Quebec then back to france and finaly Australia. This song is for him and others!
Cohen was such a special human. My son's middle name is "Cohen" in his honor. I hope you'll keep exploring his music. Check out "The Future" or "Waiting for the Miracle" next.
You should watch Leonard's last video, before he passed away. "Happens to the Heart". Perhaps not Leonard's best, but a moving way to say good bye. Leonard is a deep dive. He only started making records and singing in his 30's. He had several novels and books of poetry long before his first song or record. He lived in a Zen monastery twice for numerous years at a time as well. He also lived on the island of Hydra off the coast of Greece back in the 60's. In his later years, he always performed in a well tailored suit. His father a tailor, and his grandfather a rabbi. Any live footage from any point in his career, is as enchanting as this performance. I'm sure the other commenters will list his other songs you hear. But at some point, go watch, "Happens to the Heart". Thanks for these reactions. I like your style. Thanks.
Hi Polo I'm 84 and living in Montreal. I remember when he was singing in the coffee houses here. They were called beatniks in those days. They were on the ground floor of what became the hippy generation. He sang and wrote about what we are living through today. Peace John.
That's Javier Más, and I believe he's playing an oud - a late medieval precursor to the guitar from the middle east. Introduced to Spain by the moors. There's something spellbinding about watching an old person who is the absolute master of their craft perform it. In this case, we have both Cohen and Más.
I LOVED this reaction! I didn't know this music, and I loved how you went the extra mile and explained it, as well as your emotional response to it. Thank you so much!
Cohen's library amasses roughly 50 years, and on every decade has incredible songs. Another favourite of mine is Dance Me To The End of Love. He is an author, poet, singer and national treasure. He always fought his identity with christianity and became a monk. He returned to music after his manager ran off with his earnings. Released another great album while lying on his back in a hospital before he passed. The song Travelling Light discusses his 'agree to disagree with God.' Great bloody tune!
I loved that you reacted to this song and Leonard Cohen! Thank you! He is a beloved artist, and poet, singer. When I lived in the artist-filled "Plateau" neighborhood of Montreal, I had the pleasure of crossing paths with him, such a humble and gentle person!
This is your best reaction yet ... The best gig of my life was in the O2 in London watching this man (on MDMA..) - I remember a group of young ladies behind us comment 'he's a ladies man' Coming up and hearing 'First we took Manhattan' was incredible - Polo you ** need ** to listen to the studio version of The Partisan, he produced it nearly 40 years earlier
Polo - hope your OWIE is improving, Brother. That is Javier Mas playing the Laud; usually a 12-string, and OMG this guy’s impeccable playing is really exceptional. (Thx, Cliff in re, Lyricist for this one.) Leonard’s lyrics and poetry sometimes took a long time to marinate, as related by his close friends, like Sting. His body may be gone from earth, his music will never die, and THANKS for honoring him. 🙏🫡❤️
I have loved this song since he released it long ago, but this is my first time hearing this live video. Thanks for this and your reaction. The Portuguese guitar was perfect! Another version that is equally moving is this one by AURORA: th-cam.com/video/9rBCEznPLcQ/w-d-xo.htmlsi=xc9efdgv2R7A4rPM
Eyy Polo, just discovered your channel listening to some of my old favorites! Seen as you listened to Quicksilver, I can see you're open minded.... So I've got two suggestions for you - 1. is "Green Manalishi (Live Boston Tea Party) - By Fleetwood Mac... link here th-cam.com/video/FskZ6PQjTY4/w-d-xo.html (only listen to about 5:25 - after that they go for like a 10min jam on bass lol.... the main song is just the first 5:25mins. A bit of history, this was _Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac_ - I'm sure you're aware of the Stevie Nicks Fleetwood mac, PG's is nothing like it. You wouldn't think they're the same band at all. Infact, they changed lead members so many times that there was a period were none of the founding members were actually in the band... fans refer to it as "The Fake Mac" 🤣 2. Is "Hypnotized" - Fleetwood Mac. This was from an album called 'Mystery to Me' and honestly, this could have been the 'Fake Mac' Period... because it also doesn't sounds a whole lot like Mac to me. I think you'll like this one better anyways... here's the link! th-cam.com/video/fDzXbdxeeHI/w-d-xo.html PS. Happy I stumbled on your channel!
Sorry I don't know how to request you watch something but I've spent the last week watching people react to James Blunt's Monsters and they have as I have a visceral reaction I never come across a song that can do that.
I enjoy your channel; but while that kinetic sculpture in the background may be trademark, it is a distraction. Also, I don't think TOOL is all that good.
Please listen to “Gnarls Barkley - Crazy (Official Video) [4K : Remastered]” on TH-cam. I’ve played it over and over. The song and visuals are haunting. Thx.

Thanks Google
Thanks for identifying the original authors. It's easy to imagine the lyrics being written by Cohen though - a great song.
Greetings from Leonard's home, Canada. "J'ai tant d'amis- J'ai la France entiére." "I have so many friends- I have the whole of France." Peace, love and bellbottoms.
Oh Gosh, a kindred spirit for so many!! He got me through dark times - he understood when no one else did! ❤❤❤
Aaaahhh Leonard Cohen .... what an artist. Favourite of mine for sure, love this reaction
RIP Lenard my favourite poet,singer,musician.😢
And author!❤
He has such a deep, soulful, mindful, lovely library of music. I love his song, "You Want It Darker."
I discovered Leonard Cohen when a teenager back in the 60’s. So much brilliant music in Britain back then but his soul shone through and stays with me to this day. A true poet.
My favourite Montreal poet and musician. He was an amazing man. Democracy is pretty topical right now and so is the song.
A beautiful song and great commentary. Thank you.
Cohen moves me with every song he ever sang

One of my favourite Cohen pieces
Love Leonard Cohen, and love this song. I mistakenly thought he had written it until watching your video!
A beautiful song and Javier Mas is also amazing!
Cohen is a Montréal (and province of Québec) treasure. Haunting voice.
Polo, I could not take my eyes off your face as Leonard sang. I felt so connected with all my soul.
Speaking of stoic performer on stage: I saw Leonard Cohen live and he sang his whole concert with one hand over his heart and didn't move from behind the mike the whole time. And it was one of the best concerts I've ever been to.
And Polo sits there speachless. Amazing song. Next he should listen to Cohen's song Democracy is Coming. Timely tune.
He always surrounds himself with amazing musicians and makes sure they are highlighted
He saved me,because his voiice,his songs,bring me back to reality..rip Leonard❤love you

His last tour was magnificent. The musicians were incredible, and Cohen charming. The room had the vibe of happy reverence ❤ Just a great night for me.
LOVE ❤ Leonard Cohen! Thank you!

Great reaction to an absolute treasure. Curious about the rotating mechanism in the background. Wonder where he purchased it or perhaps built it.
So sad but so beautiful !

This is a stunning Leonard Cohen. And also, Antony does a truly haunting version of it and I hope Polo reacts to that version one day!

"Everybody Knows" is probably a song that people would recognize the most by Leonard Cohen, so cinematic.
Great song…..and artist!
A master
🎉wow I have never heard this song before.....it's amazing especially the instrumental. This us definitely. Going on my playlist
Listen to his whole, "Popular Problems" album.
It's as if he had to leave us something for now, before he left us.
The whole album is outstanding.
