Great, informative video. Well explained. Many thanks. Mixing colours is something I find challenging so this has been very helpful. Al I need to do is remember all you said!
Thank you Michele. I'm a 'retired beginner' trying to get to grips with watercolour painting for about a year now. I've always been good at drawing, even the odd oilpainting when I was young, but now I have developed a fascination for watercolour. About ten minutes into a painting though, when I feel it's not going well, I tend to start jabbing at any colour in a desperate attempt to save the day! LOL! I can't seem to control my hysteria! LOL! You are helping me to learn that I must start to understand colour first and not go at it like a hog at a trough! Thanks again.
You are very welcome! One of the best things for you will be to work in a limited palette. I don't mean to restrict how many colours you own and use, but each colour you add to a painting, make a note of it and only add more if necessary. For example, if you use a blue in the sky, could you use that same blue to mix a green or a grey or purple elsewhere in the painting. Doing this will naturally mean that your paintings have a certain colour scheme which evolves naturally, and you add exactly as many colours as you need and no more... This approach will stop you from losing control and being hoggy :-)
I love color theory and you explain it well. I appreciate you explaining the different pigments with their common names along with substitutes. I have found I have many more colors than I really need because mixing my own is so much more exciting. Thanks for the thorough explanation of French Ultramarine vs Ultramarine.
I am so glad to have found your channel, Michelle. I have learned so much from you. You’ve saved me so much time so that I’m not stumbling around caught up in trial and error. I’m very grateful for your excellent videos.
Can’t wait to find your color wheel video. This is great. I’m always looking for new ways to use my color pencils with a great color layering effect. This will be fun to try out. I love it when I can get my skin gray or black to go with my pencil drawing
Thank you Michele. I love my ultramarine. The brand I have out just now is Sennelier ultramarine deep. Very little if any granulation. I use it for skies mixed with a touch of cobalt blue. I'm just two years into painting so mostly stay with a split primary, plus earth tones and paynes grey. I have a couple ready made greens and a Quin violet and purple in my daily working pallet. I have a Sennelier 12+6 ready made half pan pallet, and a 48 color half pan Pretty Excellent pallet from the same company that makes Paul Reuben paint. I use for card making. There are so many pretty paints out there but at this stage I think it's better to stick to basics. Thanks again.
Sylvie here, I love ultramarine is my favorite colour for one and I love to use it for a deep night shadow next to Payne’s great. . I love your channel and your wonderful. We learn rather much more than the in class we took. Thank you
Thank you, Michelle. This was a very helpful video. I am a beginner with water colour and I feel pretty intimidated by the prospect of colour mixing. You have simplified things for me.
Wow I really enjoy the color scheme going on in the first few mins. The blue files and orange background with your purple top and hair. I might use this color palette in a painting!
I am a total beginner and after a year of simply playing with colours I am now at a place where I am not that overwhelmed and needed to understand what is this Ultramarine people talk about😛 and what happens when I add it to my palette. I am a year late but I am now ready to add an Ultramarine and mix🙏🏽
Thank you Michelle it was extremely helpful very interesting can you cover day so that I can retain you were trying to accomplish many uses for those and I save this video in my favorites
Thank you very helpful video, I’m a beginner and have a basic palette of 12 colors this is very helpful as I don’t want to invest into more expensive sets until I learn more about the medium and I guess mixing is useful for all levels anyway.😊😊
Thank you for another great video on color mixing. I especially appreciated your discussion of the properties of the colors you were mixing with the ultramarine especially some of the ones I don’t currently have in my palette- very helpful!
Very useful, Michele. I'm doing a lot of color mixing and swatching these days. It's a basic that I didn't spend enough time on. It's hard to create any decent painting when you're lacking this skill. 😁Thanks very much.
Hi Michele I feel like I know you as I’ve watched so many of your lessons. Thank you I’ve learned so much as a beginner from drawing to colours to what to do as well as what not to do. Thank you for sharing 💕✨☺️
Hello Michele! Interestingly, Winsor and Newton's "Ultramarine Green Shade" isn't greenish at all, as evidenced by the fact that when mixed with Permanent Rose you get bright purples, but mixed with yellow you get dull greens. It's a bit deceptive and confusing for artists! That said, this colour carries more "oomph" than their French Ultramarine, so it's my preferred violet-based blue. I'm loving your presentations too! 😁😁
This is really helpful, as a beginner I've experienced what you describe using ultramarine blue and now I understand why and how to use it best! Thank you : )
I LOVE your videos! I am learning so much of what the different paints will do. I am going to start a little book showing the paint mixes like you have demonstrated. Thank you !✨💖✨
Hello, Laurence writing, love your tutorial and you as tutor. Thank you for your wonderful approach in teaching . Although ultramarine is not recommended for the sky I tend to use it for the ocean.

Gorgeous color, I preferred the St.Petersberg one. Will try with my Van Gogh ones and take notes like yours. Which I did with the greens video. You are a great teacher and I thank you for sharing
I just discovered your channel and watched a couple of your color mixing videos -- I love them, they are so so helpful and informative! Thank you for sharing your knowledge. You've got a new subscriber 😊
Great colour mix tuition Michele. The one t hing i would find useful though is a last screen shot of all your colours and your mixes for me to keep in my ‘ go to’ folder. What i will do though is have a go at colour mixing similar ones that i have. One thing i would also like to see on your channel ( and you might have done this already in which case you can send me a link?) is the use and mixing potential of the different browns : burnt sienna, burnt umber, raw umber.... thanks.
Not done a browns video yet, but no doubt I will in due course 🙂 I did have an overview of the swatches in the video but it was way too long so I chopped it. If I can find the time I will put it up on my website, working rather long hours currently 😏☺️
Think I cancelled my comment! Just wanted to say thanks for such an informative vid. Love Ultramarine for mixing greys but never really used it to mix anything else. Will definitely start from today. Great vid, cheers!
Thank you! You just confirmed what I’ve been thinking about Ultramarine blue+Venetian red. That it makes what is referred to as “Mars violet”. Also, you should play around with chrome oxide green and ultramarine and make up some muted blue greens and emerald greens. Could be be useful for storm clouds or coastal waters?
Very interesting and usefull tips on ultramarine ,especially the greens. You have a clear way of explaining things. Please do make more videos like this. I was wondering which brush was used here?
I guess I should have known better. I got lots of ultramarine for pretty cheap artist grade stuff too and I want to make skies but the only blue ive really got in any sizeable amount is ultramarine. Well I am a beginner but ive got no choice but to try and make skies from it. Nevertheless Thank You for this video. I will definitely need all the help I can get.
When you can afford it buy something like a staining blue (Phthalo). It will last for ages and you can half and half it with your ultramarine to make it apply more smoothly :-)
On the screen it looks like the Petersburg Ultramarine is less or not granulating. Is it also in real ? In my Ultramarines the Schmincke Ultramarine feinst is the most leaning to the red side. It is in a box from the 1990tisch. I dont know the pigment number. It really stands out. thank you for the interesting video.
This video answered so many of my questions about ultramarine blue. I really appreciate this information, and the way you present it! If possible, could you someday address the colors Phthalo blue red shade and Phthalo blue green shade? They look so similar in color charts, and I don’t understand the reason for two shades such as this. Of course with the difference of red and green they will mix differently, but why are these attached to Phthalo? You don’t see other colors with so many attachments. I’m probably not explaining myself very clearly, but I feel that there must be some information about Phthalo that I am missing. Phthalo also appears in green with red and blue attached! I guess my basic question is : Why Phthalo? 😂 Thanks so much for your wonderful videos, and for always being so generous with your time in answering my questions. Have a wonderful day Michele!
Yes I will certainly make that video one day! When a color such as Phthalo is described as Green Shade or Red Shade, the difference can be tiny, and just be a matter of (relative to that color) tending slightly towards the yellow (hence green) end of the spectrum or slightly towards the red (think purple) end of the spectrum. Then you get Phthalo Green which is actually a green. The word Phthalo is a description of the type of pigment, rather than being a specific color. You have a wonderful day too :-)
I want to thank you for your teaching on colors. especially I find some company call pant name different so when you are new and try to understand or fallow you are already at lost. but you explain if you don't have this color you can mix these colors or sometimes they call it like this etc.. you have no idea how much I appreciate. so I subscribed to your youtube and I know anyone who went to learn art will join. I want to ask for your recommendations on if I want to set 12 basic colors on my palette from the daniel smith brand what would be your choice for me .also if I went to buy only 3 good paintbrushes. which brand and brush number might be? thanks
Hello Jin, I am so glad you like the videos. I have a video on recommended starter colours if you search for it on youtube with my name it's called How To Start Watercolor Painting (10 Starter Colors!) I am also bringing out my own starter brush set at the end of the year, I recommend a large (10 - 12) and small (4-6) round brush with a good point and one large flat brush a couple of inches wide.
I stopped painting for a while. Now all my pigments are “hard”... dried out, I guess. But when I add water to the well, the paint just becomes “thinned down”. Is there something I can add to my paints to softness the pigments up and make them creamy again...like when they first came out of the tubes? Or must I buy all new paints?
It sounds like they are not fully re-wetting. Rather than just re-wetting with your brush try adding water to the pan and letting it sit for some time, you can try a little vegetable glycerin or gum arabic too. It could be the brand of course, cheaper paints and some other brands don't re-wet well.
😮 A video on mixing with ultramarine that doesn't include the grey you get from mixing with burnt sienna? I thought that was ultramarine's most famous double act.
Hello, we just made each other a colour chart with ultramarine. We all see it to be very helpful in the future. This is Karen should we do the same with other colours?
Hi Karen, I recommend initially making single colour charts, each colour singly with various amounts of water. Next you can make secondary colour charts ie greens, oranges and purples. For these you put for example blues along one side, yellows along the other and mix together where they line up to get a whole page of greens. I will be doing more colour mixing videos soon 🙂
I do love ultranarine blue and actually find the gtanulation is awesome for skies especially mixed with sienna...but the multiple ads ...I think I counted 5...interruptions were quite a turn off...I understand the need for support but u might be losing subscribers on that point...what do I know...just an honest point I thought u may like to know...please don't take it negatively...I truly mean u no harm...💛 thanx for sharing your color knowledge with us...
Oh, sorry that is a lot of ads. I only turn them on, the exact amount TH-cam show you varies from video to video. I know that their algorithm also considers how much an individual viewer is known to tolerate adverts. Which is bad for me because I frequently have YT playing whilst I am washing dishes and can't skip the ads! YT does have a subscription service and you can get rid of all ads on all videos, I don't know how much it is though...
@@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber thanx for your reply. Its ok...I know these things can be tricky...despite that I do love your knowledge of color and appreciate your kindness and generosity...stay well and happy watercolor painting💛
Thank you Teri, sorry about the Ads, I need them turned on as it gives me a little bit of recompense for my time, I earn very little from them (about 2 dollars a day at the moment), It can take 4 - 12 hours to produce a video. TH-cam decides how many ads to serve depending on viewer habits, so if you try to skip them straight away it will show you less going forward. I get loads as I tend to be washing dishes when viewing youtube and can't get the gloves off fast enough to skip :-/
Let me know how you feel about Ultramarine Blue!

😮 A video on mixing with ultramarine that doesn't include the grey you get from mixing with burnt sienna? I thought that was ultramarine's most famous double act.
It's a great mix. Perhaps I need a second ultramarine video :-)
Should one of the Ultramarines be Jacksons Art.
Ah this is a very old video now, I just used the brands I had on hand. Most ultramarines are somewhat similar.
What type of palette do you use? I haven't seen anything like that in Canada.
Hello Monica, I think you mean this one, it's by Frisk: amzn.to/2SB6Wqi
I enjoyed the video I can't live without ultramarine However, so many ads I may not watch more
Thank you Teri, sorry about the Ads, I need them turned on as it gives me a little bit of recompense for my time, I earn very little from them (about 2 dollars a day at the moment), It can take 4 - 12 hours to produce a video. TH-cam decides how many ads to serve depending on viewer habits, so if you try to skip them straight away it will show you less going forward. I get loads as I tend to be washing dishes when viewing youtube and can't get the gloves off fast enough to skip :-/
@@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber Thanks for explaining how this works I will try your suggestion I do enjoy your videos Thanks
