I think Nicktoons' commercial bumpers put it best: "Watching Ren and Stimpy is sorta like eating a giant burrito. It's big and gooey and delicious but then you feel like you wanna hurl when you're finished."
If I were to describe Ren and Stimpy using a food metaphor, it would be a 10 foot tall sandwich filled with every food ingredient known to humanity, and I mean every single one. Doug is....two loaves of bread with mayonnaise and lettuce in between....pretty bland but harmless.
So the question ends up being, are you willing to stomach a putrid Surstrommüng and arsenic sauce sandwich searching for the good stuff(I don’t know, meatball sub-) or pass it on for ok and safe, knowing you won’t ever get the gourmet stuff either.
Ren and Stimpy would be a Subway sandwich with everything they have on it, it's going to be too spicy and there will be a few things in there you don't like but the flavor will be incredible and you will remember it fondly, later you'll get a different sandwich which is incredibly similar but with a few of the more unpleasant ingredients removed, this sandwich will be called Spongebob Squarepants and you will absolutely love it.
@@Claymann71 The entire world of Invader Zim is actually both depressing and terrifying when you actually think about it. Wherever the hell Zim takes place is strangely Orwellian and nobody bothers to question it.
I'm also interested, if only because I'm curious what he thinks about the show's handling of abuse, Dib in particular. John Enter has made it very clear that due to personal experiences, seeing abusive relationships (particularly abusive parents) is very emotional for him. I'd argue that harassment, bullying, failure, and abuse are the most pivotal themes to the world of Invader Zim and I could easily see that being a point of contention for Enter. It doesn't help that the main reason Zim and Dib are hated among their races is because they're perceived as mentally ill, which, given Enter himself was harassed for being on the autism spectrum, is going to hit really close to home. I personally believe the show handles it incredibly well, because even though most of the abusers get away with it, IZ runs on the principle of "Don't be these people". While never outright stated, it makes it very clear that kind of behavior is NOT okay and it does psychologically hurt the people who go through it. However, it's really subtle, so I can very easily see someone who has been bullied and abused missing that aspect or simply feeling uncomfortable watching it. What I'm saying is it's something I predict Enter will either adore for the realism and subtlety or despise for the exact same reason.
It’s also a smart review because it’s not praising it to the heavens like a lot of people even nowadays, it’s just Mr. Enter explaining why he respected it more than liked it (and honestly, I don’t blame him for not being a fan of the show, it caused the gross out trend which was a bad influence on the 1990s and even later in the early 21st Century).
I grew up with Ren and Stimpy, dude. I believe it was definitely one of the quintessential Nicktoons that pushed the envelope, and I thoroughly enjoyed it!

What made 'Ren & Stimpy' more appealing to me than the other two Nicktoons from 1991 was how much it tried to emulate classic cartoons more so than 'Rugrats', and 'Doug'. You can tell that John K. was HEAVILY influenced by Bob Clampett, but he would goo WAY deeper than Clampett ever went in his whole career. The 'gross out' humor can be a turn off for me, but episodes like 'Simpy's Invention' has very little 'gross out' humor, and stands out as one of the classics.
In 1991-92, I watched all 3 original Nicktoons every Sunday Morning. R&S and Original Rugrats were the main two that were memorable and had the most entertainment value.

Penguin Lagann I loved the first 2.5 seasons of TMNT, but I thought that the show went downhill after that, and definitely after SPOILERS Shredder mutated himself.
Even when I was a kid growing up, I was fully aware that Shnookums & Meat was a HORRIBLE ripoff of Ren & Stimpy. I remember trying to watch the former when I was like 8 or 9 and just being baffled that another chaotic cat and dog show would come along and try to imitate the incomparability of the latter.
Stimpy's Invention took a year to complete and the timing of the humour was perfect. Cans without Labels took 6 years and the timing was awful, not a single joke landed.
Honestly Enter has already covered Spongebob pretty heavily. He loves seasons1-3, likes season 4, he doesn’t have many kind thoughts on seasons 5-10, and thinks that the show has only recently improved with season 11.

I think he was referring to his animated atrocities reviews, not so much the nick o rama reviews. Besides he didn't go too in depth with this, just stated his thoughts. Kind of like Doug Walkers Disneycember reviews. Also, Ren and Stimpy basically kickstarted the nick toons off, so it is only fitting that Mr Enter starts off with Ren and Stimpy.
Man, this is one of the shows that defined my childhood. It was one of mine and my sister's favorites when we were kids. Even my parents and grandparents loved it and would watch it with us. My sister and I had farting Ren and Stimpy dolls that were Christmas presents from one of our uncles. Man, it was such a good show.
We all know your stance towards "wacky humour" by this point. You've criticized a lot of shows for it, sometimes rightfully so, but other times it felt like you weren't the target audience and you tried to apply logic to something that never tried to make sense to begin with due its very specific appeal. So I really mean it when I say that I appreaciate your take on Ren & Stimpy: its hit or miss nature, delivery of comedy through slapstick and its over the top nature... You've perfectly conveyed the show's appeal even though it's not your cup of tea, and I really respect that. You've come a long way since you started doing reviews.
This show use to creep me the heck out as a kid. But now (the Creator's controversy aside) I've gained a new appreciation for it (somewhat). Also I really don't count Cow and Chicken as a rip-off (Even though the Creator did help worked on Ren and Stimpy), it felt like it's own thing and it did reasonably well.
I HATE gross out humor, and yet Ren and Stimpy is one of my favorite cartoons. I don't watch it for the gross out, I tolerate the gross out for the rest of it. I like seeing what wacky endeavours these two animals go through, and exactly how insane they can get. I'd say you did it justice here. Can't wait to see what you think of Invader Zim, a show I have yet to check out. :-)

I wasn't really into Ren and Stimpy. I wasn't into the adult humour and gross-out aspects, and the art-style made me uncomfortable. I recognize that it was a great show in many people's memories, just not mine.

Ren and Stimpy is influential, has a lot of memorable episodes, and one of THE most memorable parody superheroes of all time: Powdered Toast Man... but looking back at some of these clips... I think it hasn't aged very well... even if you consider John K.'s modern controversies intact.
Correction, John K was actually fired in 1992. But it is surprising that despite the show being toned down it still ran four more years before ending in 1996.
I missed the point in time that Ren and Stimpy was in reruns, but I'm morbidly curious to watch it now that I'm older and no one gives a shit. Also, I cannot wait for Kablam, that'll be a fun one. Plus, I'm actually watching Cow and Chicken and despite being "ripped off" from Ren and Stimpy it's actually really funny in my opinion. I feel like rugrats and Ren and Stimpy people remember about the same amount. Both were era-defining, successful, and Ren and Stimpy was very influential. I watched both as a kid in the 2000s
TheArceusftw I guess you can say that it was the parents’ fault for not motoring children watching the demographic of the videos (Ages 13 and up.) And TH-cam created a solution to stay out of COPPA, which was TH-cam Kids, the content that was appropriate for children but executed poorly.

It's pandering to lazy parents who can't be bothered to actually monitor their own children's online activity. It's emotionally driven garbage. A couple years ago, I was watching Ren and Stimpy on MTV every Saturday morning at 6 o'clock, and that was really cool, that I got to see one of the oldest nicktoons on tv in 2016.
And who could forget that classic episode where Ren pulled out his tooth nerves. Still one of the most uncomfortable episodes they made, not gross so much as physically uncomfortable to watch. It was like an animated version of hostel back in the day.
Ren & Stimpy is one of the shows my mom loved to quote when i was growing up lol she would always sing the happy happy joy joy song when i was sad to cheer me up
Ren and Stimpy is actually one of my favourite Nicktoons. I like it's humor,art style and characters along with it being pretty revolutionary but I will admit the gross out hasn't aged to well along with "Adult Party Cartoon".
4:03-4:06 Actually, Cartoon Network made 2 Stupid Dogs 3 years before Cow and Chicken in 1994. It’s actually very good and John K. himself actually worked on some segments. In my opinion, it’s a very underrated show, along With SWAT Kats.
I've never seen a single clip of Ren and Stimpy before, but looking at the ones shown here... this honestly looks more like a horror show than a comedy.
I personally prefer cow and chicken to ren and stimpy. As you said, some people don't love gross-out humor, and R&S goes a bit too far for me. C&C has what we might call "R&S-light" gross-out humor: it has gross things, but they're just gross enough to acknowledge that they're gross but not gross enough to make me avert my eyes to them. It creates a decent balance IMO.
As Enter said, Ren and Stimpy wasn't really that gross, it had gross episodes but sometimes it was just generally weird, for example the grossest thing in the episode Powdered Toast Man is the line "cling tenaciously to my buttocks!!" (A genitals-caught-in-the-zipper joke also exists in the episode, predating the movie There's Something About Mary by the way, but it's done with extreme restraint so it's pretty tame really).
I remember Ren and Stimpy. It was one of those shows that was incredibly f***ed up but as a kid you didn't understand any of it. It was also the only show my sister and dad both liked. My sister loved exposing me to scary and disturbing shows and movies and my dad liked it because he understood the jokes. I think his favorite episode was where the Soviet Union sent the duo into space while the USA send a pair of pigs into space (Look it up!). It's a piece of the 90's that anyone who watched it won't forget any time soon.
I think Ren and Stimpy had that same "90s edge" that cartoons like Powerpuff Girls did. Hotdiggedydemon put it pretty well when he said "this show was everything your mommy told you weren't supposed to like". Boogers, snot, veins, blood, insanity, kitty litter, furballs, shaking butts, etc.
Hey enter love your videos just a little piece of advice I would probably put things like your Nick O rama and technrocity into a playlist or something onto your main Channel instead of just having the individual videos all loosey-goosey everywhere that way people can watch them in a neat organize place. I know right now it's not exactly a hot-button issue because they are of the more recent variety but later down the line it will definitely be harder to find these things just looking through your Channel and it would be nice to have these in their own little neat slots.
“Making Fiends” was actually slated to air on the official Nickelodeon channel, but was moved to the Nicktoons network at the last minute. Shame you won’t review it, as I grew up with the original Flash web series, and feel Nickelodeon treated the show very unfairly. Nevertheless, I do love Ren and Stimpy.

I've watched every episode of SpongeBob SquarePants so I'm definitely excited for his review on that show.
Honestly Enter has already covered Spongebob pretty heavily. He loves seasons1-3, likes season 4, he doesn’t have many kind thoughts on seasons 5-10, and thinks that the show has only recently improved with season 11.
Yeah, but he was mainly reviewing an episode from a season he likes of doesn't like. I'm curious to see what he thinks about the show as a whole.

I think he was referring to his animated atrocities reviews, not so much the nick o rama reviews. Besides he didn't go too in depth with this, just stated his thoughts. Kind of like Doug Walkers Disneycember reviews. Also, Ren and Stimpy basically kickstarted the nick toons off, so it is only fitting that Mr Enter starts off with Ren and Stimpy.
This is going to be so much better than Disneycember 2019

Man, this is one of the shows that defined my childhood. It was one of mine and my sister's favorites when we were kids. Even my parents and grandparents loved it and would watch it with us. My sister and I had farting Ren and Stimpy dolls that were Christmas presents from one of our uncles. Man, it was such a good show.
We all know your stance towards "wacky humour" by this point. You've criticized a lot of shows for it, sometimes rightfully so, but other times it felt like you weren't the target audience and you tried to apply logic to something that never tried to make sense to begin with due its very specific appeal.
So I really mean it when I say that I appreaciate your take on Ren & Stimpy: its hit or miss nature, delivery of comedy through slapstick and its over the top nature... You've perfectly conveyed the show's appeal even though it's not your cup of tea, and I really respect that. You've come a long way since you started doing reviews.
This show use to creep me the heck out as a kid. But now (the Creator's controversy aside) I've gained a new appreciation for it (somewhat). Also I really don't count Cow and Chicken as a rip-off (Even though the Creator did help worked on Ren and Stimpy), it felt like it's own thing and it did reasonably well.

I HATE gross out humor, and yet Ren and Stimpy is one of my favorite cartoons. I don't watch it for the gross out, I tolerate the gross out for the rest of it. I like seeing what wacky endeavours these two animals go through, and exactly how insane they can get. I'd say you did it justice here. Can't wait to see what you think of Invader Zim, a show I have yet to check out. :-)
This show was so graphic i wasn't even allowed to watch it as a kid. That is a testament to how awesome it was. lol
Seeing this animation again, I remember how much of my imagination as a kid was influenced by this show.

Ikr. I thought Mr. Enter was not going to review the show after what he said in his Ren Seeks Help review. I guess he might've changed his mind for this series since he has been maturing a lot lately.
I wasn't really into Ren and Stimpy. I wasn't into the adult humour and gross-out aspects, and the art-style made me uncomfortable.
I recognize that it was a great show in many people's memories, just not mine.

Last month I actually saw Bob Camp at NYCC’s artist alley. Nobody came to his booth except me (at least that’s what it seemed like) and he was just was looking at his phone. I kind of felt bad for him.

Ren and Stimpy is influential, has a lot of memorable episodes, and one of THE most memorable parody superheroes of all time: Powdered Toast Man... but looking back at some of these clips... I think it hasn't aged very well... even if you consider John K.'s modern controversies intact.

But it is surprising that despite the show being toned down it still ran four more years before ending in 1996.
I missed the point in time that Ren and Stimpy was in reruns, but I'm morbidly curious to watch it now that I'm older and no one gives a shit.

Plus, I'm actually watching Cow and Chicken and despite being "ripped off" from Ren and Stimpy it's actually really funny in my opinion.

I feel like rugrats and Ren and Stimpy people remember about the same amount. Both were era-defining, successful, and Ren and Stimpy was very influential. I watched both as a kid in the 2000s

A couple years ago, I was watching Ren and Stimpy on MTV every Saturday morning at 6 o'clock, and that was really cool, that I got to see one of the oldest nicktoons on tv in 2016.

Still one of the most uncomfortable episodes they made, not gross so much as physically uncomfortable to watch.

Actually the closest we got to a decent Ren&Stimpy inspired animation was the Timon and Pumba cartoon show and that one was exceptionally tame.
Ren & Stimpy is one of the shows my mom loved to quote when i was growing up lol she would always sing the happy happy joy joy song when i was sad to cheer me up

Ren and Stimpy is actually one of my favourite Nicktoons. I like it's humor,art style and characters along with it being pretty revolutionary but I will admit the gross out hasn't aged to well along with "Adult Party Cartoon".

4:03-4:06 Actually, Cartoon Network made 2 Stupid Dogs 3 years before Cow and Chicken in 1994. It’s actually very good and John K. himself actually worked on some segments. In my opinion, it’s a very underrated show, along With SWAT Kats.
I've never seen a single clip of Ren and Stimpy before, but looking at the ones shown here... this honestly looks more like a horror show than a comedy.
It’s kinda like if a treehouse of horror segment got turned into it’s own show.
My mom and I loved ren and stimpy when I was a kid. I remember telling my animation class and they were shocked my mom let me watch ren and stimpyXD

I personally prefer cow and chicken to ren and stimpy. As you said, some people don't love gross-out humor, and R&S goes a bit too far for me. C&C has what we might call "R&S-light" gross-out humor: it has gross things, but they're just gross enough to acknowledge that they're gross but not gross enough to make me avert my eyes to them. It creates a decent balance IMO.
It definitely has similar energy
As Enter said, Ren and Stimpy wasn't really that gross, it had gross episodes but sometimes it was just generally weird, for example the grossest thing in the episode Powdered Toast Man is the line "cling tenaciously to my buttocks!!" (A genitals-caught-in-the-zipper joke also exists in the episode, predating the movie There's Something About Mary by the way, but it's done with extreme restraint so it's pretty tame really).

I remember Ren and Stimpy. It was one of those shows that was incredibly f***ed up but as a kid you didn't understand any of it. It was also the only show my sister and dad both liked. My sister loved exposing me to scary and disturbing shows and movies and my dad liked it because he understood the jokes. I think his favorite episode was where the Soviet Union sent the duo into space while the USA send a pair of pigs into space (Look it up!). It's a piece of the 90's that anyone who watched it won't forget any time soon.
I think Ren and Stimpy had that same "90s edge" that cartoons like Powerpuff Girls did. Hotdiggedydemon put it pretty well when he said "this show was everything your mommy told you weren't supposed to like".

Hey enter love your videos just a little piece of advice I would probably put things like your Nick O rama and technrocity into a playlist or something onto your main Channel instead of just having the individual videos all loosey-goosey everywhere that way people can watch them in a neat organize place. I know right now it's not exactly a hot-button issue because they are of the more recent variety but later down the line it will definitely be harder to find these things just looking through your Channel and it would be nice to have these in their own little neat slots.

“Making Fiends” was actually slated to air on the official Nickelodeon channel, but was moved to the Nicktoons network at the last minute. Shame you won’t review it, as I grew up with the original Flash web series, and feel Nickelodeon treated the show very unfairly. Nevertheless, I do love Ren and Stimpy.
