Doug, I sure do appreciate you sharing your creativity and ideas with all of us. Can you imagine how many people you have helped find a productive focus for their free time? I love every second with you on the TH-cam. It's like it's just you and me having a good time. Thank you!
I love razor sharp knives, gouges, planes and whatever. I love to cook too. One time while finely slicing cabbage for coleslaw I nipped my fingertip and nail off into the cabbage. I couldn't find it. I served it to my dad and told him a year later. He just laughed and said "it tasted pretty good to me". He's my hero! 😅😅
Super little bird. Birders can make special birds like wrens, too! It's gonna take me time. I already clipped off a bit off a finger. It's a learning experience that only makes want try again - after finger heals and I make leather thimbles!
I began carving compact characters by watching a Jack Price video. He sent me a Compact Character Certificate after I showed him a photo of one character that I had done. I did all kinds of these little characters, from Amish men to golfer guys/gals, salesmen, and so many more. One character was supposed to have a hat, but I accidentally carved it off, so I made him a bald guy which almost won best of class in one of the last carving shows/competitions in Philadelphia, PA. I also made a bunch of little snowmen Christmas tree ornaments, mushrooms, and apple cores with bite marks and some seeds in the middle. Just a ton of things you can do with a 1" square, 2" (or shorter) piece of wood. Thanks for sharing, Doug. Really enjoy your videos!
Cute little birds. I'm still a little scared of stuff so small. Still learning knife skills and trying to keep all my fingers. LOL. Thanks fir sharing.
Thanks! - I’ve been futzing around with wood carving my whole life but now with your videos I finally feel like I’m getting somewhere with it / thanks for the inspiration
Sir these are fantastic as a starter. Please feel free to do more simple and small carvings such as the figurines at the beginning of this video. Thank you again!
Hello Doug from Prince Albert Saskatchewan. Thank you for all the carvings you share. I’ve saved a few of them, bought some pieces of basa wood and some carving knives and some gloves. I was afraid to get started but I love birds so I think I will start with your comfort birds. Wish me luck! It might turn out to be a bead. I’m going where the knife takes me. Thanks again. 😊
Doug, as always an entertaining and enlightening video. I’m going to make several to go with the simple owls for my youngest granddaughter. She is an artistic, who will greatly enjoy adorning them with suitably colored plumage.
As someone just getting into carving I find these videos quite helpful. I tried three little birds and each one got a bit better. My hands were a bit tired so for the third one I put the blank in the bench vice and used a drawknife and spokeshave to hog out the heavy material. I also made it three inches long with more of a swallow’s tail. I’m looking forward to trying out some of the other 1x1 projects.
Really nice little project!! I really take what you say about wearing a carving glove to heart. About a month ago I was carving without my glove( being stupid🙄) and almost cut the end of my finger all the way off. The knife went 3/4 of the way into my finger, so now lets just say that I feel naked without the glove now😂. Have a nice week!😁😁
I started whittling in May of this year and I'm using a cheap "not a Helvie" knife. (Cheap beginners knives, decent, but require a lot of sharpening/honing). I've not had much luck whittling animals as yet. Mainly do minimalist gnomes and made some mini gnome keyrings as Xmas gifts. These birds look fun and fairly simple. Giving them a go. Thanks for all your vids Doug!
Hey Doug, just wanted to say thanks for all the videos. I have learned so much with your carving videos. And I am very interested in the tiny carving series. They are very fun and I enjoy them. They are super easy to take in the work truck with me when work is slow and I need something to keep me busy. Thanks again for everything you do.
The best part of this Doug was listening to the birds while you were carving their likeness. By the sound I would say they approved. You are the most enjoyable thing I watch on You Tube.
Love these. I'm going to carve several of these for around my bird feeder area in our backyard. Thanks for all of your AMAZING carvings and tutorials. I learned how to carve from you. Thank YOU!!!!
Thanks Doug! Really dig the tiny carvings. I’ve been hoping you would do a comfort bird video. I know you said other people have done them but you’re hands down my favorite. Would love to see a tutorial on the lil gnome. Thanks again and take care.
Thank you, Doug. I like the variety that you bring to us. Love to see more littles but all your stuff is interesting. I'm still learning and your technique and personality make it easy to pick up tips and learn. Thank you.
Lovely little project for today's evening! I absolutely appreciate, as always, that you show the rough out too, instead of using a scroll saw first! After the fourth weekend working, that really made my day!
Simple and Beautiful result , Will try to use this as an exercise to start wood carving as to make my hand as they say , Thankyou, keep up the good work
I dunno if I've heard this before, but I do believe this is true... You, dear sir, are the Bob Ross of woodcarving! Love all your stuff 🙂 Forgot to answer... ALL tiny carvings are welcome.
Doug awesome timing. My sister asked me for some small bird carvings to put on a narrow ledge in a room she just finished. These are perfect. Thanks for the video. See u on Coffee and Carving! 👍👍👍👍👍
Doug I always appreciate any of the carvings that you do. I learn a lot watching. My granddad was a whitle , some of my family say I get that from him, but he passed when I was young. Thanks for all that you do.
Oh lovely! I wonder if I could manage this, I found my hands were too arthritic and not quite big enough really for the larger owls and things. Just love the way these little creatures seem to be lurking in the wood awaiting you to come along and coax them out. ☺️ Thought the happy hare with the floppy ear looks rather fun. As always I'm guaranteed to enjoy whatever you show us next. Thanks Doug. 👍 Edit: forgot to say that I thought that sounded like a wren with a Canadian accent! I had sparrows chirping along with blackbirds panicking at a thieving magpie and the distant chirring of a finch of some sort outside my window on the edge of the Kent countryside 🇬🇧. Fascinating how your little wren sounds similar to ours... who must know I'm talking about him because he's just gone off at full throttle... yet there's something slightly different about their song that I can't put my finger on. As I say it seems like a different accent, which has been proved to be the case even in this tiny country. Apparently we have birds with regional accents, often depending on how much traffic noise there is from one place to the next. Of course the papers had great fun thinking about birds with Yorkshire dialects 😂
Thank you, thank you, thank you. 😁😁😁 You have kept me sane over the last two years, keeping the mind and hands occupied. All your videos are explained step by step in a fun and informal way. Any of your projects I have followed have turned out very well. Not quite at your standard but for me they give much satisfaction....... especially when I finish with 10 fingers still attached. Thanks again. ⭐ Your a star. 🏴
I love all the carving videos you share, thank you. I'd love to see more mini carving projects they are great fun to watch and try. Thanks for your time.
Hi Doug, Thank you for such great videos. I really like the miniture comfort bird. Been doing 3D printing for a while. This reminds me of the low poly animal print - which look great. Wanted to know if the orientation of the end grain matters when carving these mini comfort birds. I got a 3/4" x 3/4" x 36" piece of pine from the hobby shop. Looking at the end grain it curves downward. If you flip it will curve up or left or right. Wanted to know what would be the best grain orientation before I try and start carving. Haven't done any carving / woodworking in over 30 yrs. I'll admit I'm a bit nervous about giving this a go. Any help is greatly appreciated! Please continue making these great videos, I inspired by how easy you make it look and how calmly you walk your audience through the process!!!
I like the small pocket carvings personally. You mentioned that idea a while ago on your podcast so I’ve been doing little gnomes, owls and bears. This bird will be a nice edition. Better way to kill time than staring at my phone
I find it interesting that it's calming to carve a comfort bird and it also gives the bearer a calming effect when finished. Great tutorial Doug, love the size of these.
Awesome. I have some hand issues so small stuff is a challenge but I love these little birds and will carve many. And I know!!!! Any size wood,,,, size doesn’t matter 🙏
Doug, I sure do appreciate you sharing your creativity and ideas with all of us. Can you imagine how many people you have helped find a productive focus for their free time? I love every second with you on the TH-cam. It's like it's just you and me having a good time. Thank you!
He helped me get started

The 5-minute wizard got me started, I can't wait to try the 5-minute bird. Thanks for your creativity
I love razor sharp knives, gouges, planes and whatever. I love to cook too. One time while finely slicing cabbage for coleslaw I nipped my fingertip and nail off into the cabbage. I couldn't find it. Seriously though. I have tourette's and yet I rarely cut myself. Jesus works in mysterious ways. 😄
