My Antron is on 2 pieces of chain link fence top rail stuck in the ground about 2 and a half feet I have talked all over the world. Nothing fancy but it works great

Just make dam sure you unplug your antenna when you leave.. Ive had 3 of these hit by lightning. Two A99's by solorcon and one Imax 2000. the Imax 2000 took a direct hit. I didn't know it and I plugged my coax into the back of my meters fired everything up and I wasn't getting out at all. I checked the SWR and it was off the scale.. I went outside to look at my antenna and it was shredded. lol! Great antenna just make sure you don't accidentally leave it hooked up and a thunderstorm comes and fries all of your equipment.
Did you have yours grounded? Do you use an in line coax lightning arrestor? I'm getting ready to put mine up and my wife says I'm going to get th he house struck by lightning.
Put mine up on the side of the house in 1981.....when the UK got their own FM frequency. Was up ok for years until the wind broke the pole. Wasn't using it then.But you might? be interested is this. I mainly used a 40ch for local chat. I had a Rotel that was set up to 100% modulation, and left at 4watt. A friend was a professional and set it up when I got it.I'm sure you know FM skip is weird but one night chatting local someone came in, full strength signal and he was on Melbourne beach. Taken a set with him.I had a couple of overs until he disappeared, however I've chatted to the other side of the world with a standard radio and Silver Rod half wave......not bad eh!
Taught me a lot about radio in those days. For instance one night someone was going to Nottingham, 45 miles away. Picked someone up from a house about 1mile from my house, yet no signal. Talked to him all the way once he moved, and got him better in Nottingham town centre.
I used a Binatone 5 Star on 4 watts with a 1/2 silver rod about 20ft off the ground and spoke to Canada for about 3 minutes with some other local breakers when sunspots was at their highest! Good old days 73's
Had this antenna in the early 1990s it worked great with the ground plane kit @ bottom of antenna,Able to work skip and local up to 140 miles ,My antenna was on top of two story house.Using a imaxx 2000 now.
That is a great antenna, you can cover alot of band width with an antenna tuner.MFJ makes one.You won't have to mess with the tuning rings.And it can be done right at the point of operation
I know from being on the water offshore your range on a marine radio is the horizon some times you can skip .Alot of the bigger boats used to use single sideband radios now with the sat phone not a problem .So how far can you transmit and pick up ?
Yeah I had an Antron 99 I threw it in the trash can bought a Moonraker 4 and then I bought a 5/8 way big stick military antenna have a good day I'll be scanning the band Charles telling the truth
Wanna see a ton of improvement in your performance? Isolate the antenna from the metal mast - I use a 1.5" diameter solid fiberglass rod 4' long. I keep 24" between the antenna base and the mast, and centered on the rod I wrap the coax into a 5 turn x 4.25" diameter choke coil, but you really should add the radial kit too. Should almost double your long-range performance.
Crank the ring all the way to bottom that is what I did to my Antron 99 and it has perfect swr for a the bands 10 m 11meter and higher. I also ordered the ground plane for mine and it gets out and hears a little better for sure.
I got the universal cheaper ground plain I had to use a drill press to make the ring bigger I used a hole saw blade to drill it bigger. I will look and see what size if you get the universal ground plane. The acutaul antron ground plane cost a lot more. but probably fist

a ground wave is 32 feet from the ground plane but u can go taller u also need a ground

No you don't turn the rings they're for higher bands or for the ground plane kit

Makes no difference what so ever.

well perfect on 11 meter band really decent on the others like 1,5 to one on the rest it varies the further you go away form the cb

Why do people use wood for antenna masts?. Being the Antron is a 1/2 wavelength antenna, put is a half wavelength above ground!👍

When your check continuity .is an antron 99 suppose to show its grounded between load and ground on the radios end of coaxial??

Yep they use a resistor from ground to center so the radio will see 50 ohms. Very poor design and im my opiion junk.
