    What he's saying and the way he's acting are COMPLETELY contradictory.

      That's the whole point of the scene, he is trying to confuse and anger Ophelia.

    This is what happens when actors have no idea what theyre acting out.

      I think Hawke knows, but the chick is clueless. She thinks she's in some kind of John Hughes-type dramedy. You can tell she doesn't understand what she's saying.

    No sane man would speak to a girl like that, especially if her overbearing dad just made her break up with him. But that's the point: Hamlet is in a desperate, life or death situation, and he's *pretending* to be insane to buy time while he figures out his strategy. Part of the tragedy is that his hesitation (and other character defects) leads to the death by suicide of Ophelia.

    Everyone's slamming this performance: it's not Shakespearean or British enough. But this is the modern American interpretation. I teach literature to high school kids, and I see Ethan Hawke's character as trammeled by untrustworthy intimates. Even his mom (he thinks) was complicit in his father's murder, and now he's wondering if he can trust his girlfriend.
    Despite her initial obedience to her father's command to break up with Hamlet, 1:21 the two start making out, and just as 1:39 Hamlet tries to reach second base 1:46 he discovers her complicity in the plot against him (1:49 a hidden microphone).

      not why we're complaining. He doesn't deliver his lines in the spirit of their meaning. The whole of this scene looses Shakespeare's intent

    Thank you for uploading. Having just worked on this scene at a Shakespeare course I wanted to see how professional actors tackled this script. I am but a novice but can say this is the worst acting and direction I have seen. There is hope for me yet. Compare this with Benedict Cumberbatch’s take on Hamlet - a class apart.

    • @antinbath
      @antinbath 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@DreamlessSkies it is a valid interpretation. My issue was that words seem more recited rather than delivered with the thought and meaning that cause them to be spoken.

      It's no different than Shakespeare taking things from over a thousand years ago and adapting it to the 1600s.

    • @jamesonjaksch4883
      @jamesonjaksch4883 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      ElPayasoMalo it is though because Shakespeare didn’t adopt the same vernacular or fashion from the same periods he was romanticizing. He adapted it for (what was in the 1600s) modern times.

    We can criticize Ethan Hawke's acting for its departure from the classical mode, but it's like his role in "Training Day" - recall his reaction to his mentor's complicity in the narcotics trade, and the discovery that his mentor paid drug dealers to murder him.
    If you don't see the parallels, you're kind of dense.
