LMAO at using the term "historical accuracy" to describe the arcade game War Thunder, which is not at all historically accurate, nor realistic... other than its visual appearances (skins). But as to the physics, vehicle properties, and everything that matters... it's nothing more than a Pro-Russian, anti-American propaganda tool, with a small pay-to-win aspect to it (premium vehicles). If War Thunder was historically accurate, then the Russians would have had such advanced technology, they would have easily crushed the Germans in no time, and gone on to fulfill Stalin's dream of conquering most of Europe and the world. The feature list reads like the next boss plane in the Ace Combat series. Drone wingmen, microwave PDC, plasma radar disruption, huge ordinance capacity, comprehensive in-cockpit sensory input suite. This is going to be a terrifying opponent if they can pull it off.
Let's see what capabilities the F-X, Tempest, and NGAD/FA-XX can do. It's possible each of these could surpass the capabilities of even some of the older boss planes.

I think Japan is going to shock everyone, I was in this industry and I retired early but one thing I know for sure is Japan's knowledge and innovation are going to be a major factor. If they do indeed receive help from the U.S. government (Northop Grumman/Ratheon) this platform could be comparable to NGAD/FA-XX and Tempest. I hope they pull it off but it's going to be 2035ish.

Because the people who lived through WW2 are now mostly dead. Those parsimonious "tax payers" have always been short-sighted (liberal or libertarian). The Cold War spending created the technology base that has driven our economy to great heights for 45 years. All that money didn't go down a hole. Those engineers, technicians, and factory workers recycled all that government investment right back into our economy, (unlike tax cuts for rich people who just hoard everything for their children). I agree with our withholding the F-22 technology because it was so far advanced at the time. But clearly we realize that the tech is no longer so special - so we are now selling the F-35 to the world. That's how we keep the price down. (An F-35 now costs less per unit than the latest F-16. It's only the maintenance that is still costly.) But if we push everyone to build their own fighters rather than buy ours, it is OUR LOSS. That's money WE LOSE that would go right into our economy. Penny wise and pound foolish Jerome.
Yeah, that small part had quite a few inaccuracies. I don't think we'll ever see another Su-57 manufactured, to be honest. They don't even have a single squadron's worth and with sanctions they will never be able to source materials and import the tech required.
People don't realize that building and producing a high tech fighter is only a part of the puzzle. Maintaining the air craft and keeping systems operational are very labor intensive and expensive.

I'm so glad that the Japanese are doing this. It's wise, prudent and helps restore the Japanese fighting machine. No one has ever said the Japanese weren't totally courageous, but like us, the wisdom required to operate that fighting ability has been abused in the past.
Its crazy that Japan and England are both building 5th/6th generation fighters on their own, the budget to develop these things are insane. I agree with you though Japan needs it, budget wise it probably made more sense to buy F35's though.
I think as long as Japan stays on the path they are now, having them continue to be develop technologies like this is good for everyone. Having powerful Allie’s, especially in that region is key!
This is what would have happened if you combined the best of the F-18, F-22 and F-35 in terms of capability, speed and payload. This is going to be something to seriously watch.
Idea now is to start producing Super 22's now that the F35 manufacturing process has gotten more efficient. Reason for the cost of the F22 is because so many manufacturers spread out through the US had to coordinate parts and such. Centralize that effort, and now you can create a stealth fighter on a budget.
@@sumott497 they’ve been testing unseen f22s for awhile now. We are just barely seeing more of the chrome f22 that many never knew even existed. But the US always has something in store, I’m excited to see this thing if it actually comes together- sounds a bit too good to be true but time will tell.
@@sumott497 Eh, I think the F22 is supposed to be a bit of a hanger queen. They are working on a new 6th Generator fighter that hopefully will be more cost effective and have a better operational ready rate. Supposedly the Air Force is trying to streamline development so you can come up with new fighters faster at a lower cost. Its kind of a cool idea really, it allows you to be more adaptive to changing threats/conditions.
@@fwix771 If you do some reading on what's out there, the "chrome" is likely a printed thin-film technology. If hazarding a guess it's closely related to the same process that mass-prints out RFID tags. (In the case of tags it's cut into thousands of teeny little stickers, but for this it's left as an entire large sheet.) Basically it takes one incoming RF frequency and then returns that energy across a whole bunch of frequencies, which spreads out the power of the incoming RADAR signal. Even though it's production process could be considered more involved (printing thin laminate films of a metallized semi-conductor), it ends up being a lot cheaper and way more robust than other RAM because it simply goes on like a big sticker rather than a convoluted painting process with a peculiar curing process that results in something possibly fragile. It's also interesting because it could be quickly applied to older aircraft and reduce their radar returns, even if they weren't designed with stealth in mind. It's not explained in any particular patent I could find, but you can find enough patents out there relating to thin-film antennas that would support this premise for a plausible explanation. Silver and graphene seem to have good properties for this, so that might explain its color. It doesn't just look silver, but actually is silver (albeit a few microns thick).

I think this project has now merged with BAE Systems Tempest. The partnership was announced at the Farnborough Airshow 2022 on July 18, 2022. Japan and the UK run parallel programs both aimed at designing the next generation of fighters. The Tempest project involves the UK's BAE Systems and Rolls-Royce, the European missile manufacturer MBDA, and Italy's Leonardo.

They've pretty much said what they want. They want the capabilities of the F35 in a larger twin engine fighter that will have more range and more payload.
Japan is surprisingly not very technological these days. They love optimizing old technologies and standards instead of adopting new ones. They live in the 1990/2000's idea of what the future might be, rather than in 2022. They have long since relinquished the mantle of Asian innovation superpower and now South Korea, Taiwan and China fight for it. You can even see it in their cars. Conservative, proven technology optimized to the Nth degree. Furthermore, their education system values discipline and execution over creative thinking, which perpetuates this state of affairs. I don't see this endeavour changing that, and would not be surprised if misguided political and Zaibatsu interference either kills it or leads to a camel.
@@jeffk464 Israel won't join anything, the US military aid that Israel receives from the US requires the money be spent with US contractors. Israel would be required to shell out tens of billions of dollars of its own money to join the Tempest which Israel can't afford. Israel is stuck with US fighter jets made available via US military aid funding only.

@@MrDibara I have worked with Japanese owned companies, and agents many years ago and can tell you their work ethic is second to none !.More often than not I took their statements and analysis before even our own and they were proven correct 100% of time. If they committ to something you are almost guaranteed of success.

Japan is one incredible culture of excellence. Their history is amazing and every time I visit I’m amazed by pretty much everything. They can easily build one of the most state of the art 6th generation fighters.
Japan's a wonderful country & the people are fantastic. They were a staunch US ally during the cold war & still have great relations with the US today. I'm highly confident Japan's stealth fighter program will produce a fantastic aircraft & will be a tremendous asset to defense in the pacific.
I’ve been following this project for many many years since they were denied the F 22 it’s really cool to see this plane finally coming out and I think it’s gonna be fantastic
imagine being able to develop a plane that has been allowed to have it's technology and design be able to mature so much from multiple different experimental skews that there will be no doubt whatever is going to be the outcome of this project will be the bleeding edge and the cream of all the crops

You forgot to mention that Lockheed is helping them develop this plane. Since they were unable to purchase the F22 they did the next best thing and had the creator of the F22 help in creating their own replacement.
I remember reading about cold plasma sheilding decades ago, makes you wonder exactly what the 6th gen fighter that America has already built and testing is capable of.
From what I've gathered, they're split between actually developing a functioning shield system and a laser-based defensive system. The shield technology is already being deployed through the Iter project, but converting it to a weapons platform will be tricky, to say the least.
Plasma sheilding requires huge amount of energy, they already considered it as a sheild for tanks but it ate most of the space in an APC, take note, its an APC , there is not enough room for the system to be fitted inside a MBT which is already cramped and weighs over 60 tonnes

I think you will find the Japanese were severely limited in the weapons they were allowed to develop post WW11 ! Thus their forces are known as "Self Defence " probably one of the most technically advanced country in the world .
Doesn't mean a lot. The US changed the name from the Department of War, to the Department of Defense. I think Japan and South Korea are well aware that they need to step up their military forces to match the growing military threat from China.

Japans outrageous behaviour during WWII, resulted in their limited allowance to constitute warfare. However, as Japan has demonstrated itself as a good global citizen since, the gloves have come off. Strategically, Japan stands as a sentinel in the front lines of any future conflict with China, and must remain so for the foreseeable future.
It's almost weird to think that we, at one point, didn't trust Japan with a military. I totally understand why but still. Japan is genuinely one of our best allies/friends. They have so much to offer in the military space and will only make democracy even more militarily capable
The massive edge that Japan possesses over China, Russia and especially North Korea is a tradition of excellence and a highly motivated workforce. Plus, they has us as friends which doesn't hurt.

@@martintan4982 The reason US didn't sell the F22 to Japan was not because of a fear of them overtaking the USA in power (although you're probably right), but instead, it was to protect the technologies of the F22 like stealth. There could be many chinese/russian spies in Japan who would happily steal all that info about the F22, so that's why it was never sold to Japan. Also, the US is selling the F35 to Japan.
@@martintan4982 Japan isn't remotely in competition with the US. Japan flies about 250 fixed wing aircraft, none of which are bombers. It's chiefly air superiority. They'd defeat North Korea one on one. And given Russia's dismal performance, maintenance and spread out air fields, they could probably fight them to a standstill before their Ukrainian losses. China is the real potential adversary of Japan. Together with U.S. aircraft carriers and a few other NATO allies, they'd have to take on the 2,000+ air force of China. Their numbers are impressive and the specs are mostly Russian knockoffs. But China has zero experience in modern air combat so their tactics and capabilities are a big question mark. Apparently they are hiring some former NATO pilots to advise them there.

For them to do that they would need to build a US style system with a constitution that is identical and then spend a good 100 years developing their new economic culture. And then maybe just then Japan would be not that far behind the US.
Considering the precarious nature of American politics and our propensity for long dark periods of foreign policy insanity one could hardly blame Japan for their decision. One thing does surprise me however. And that’s the advertised time frame to introduce these new aircraft. It seems likely that a handoff of technology to the Japanese has already taken place. Much like with the new Korean stealth fighter. The Japanese, Koreans and the Taiwanese are absolutely too valuable as partners to risk their lost to the Chinese or Russians.
I feel like this plane is in a whole class of its own, a little bigger then f-22, carry more payload and go further sounds like a damn fighter's stealth bomber, if this plane does deliver all that, will by far be the most advanced plane yet

Japan simply does not need anything like an F-22 to defend its island. What it needs is a large competent air force with systems similar to F-16 and F-15. And a good early warning detection system that allows them to control the air space.

I think the helmet HUD idea is good, but didn't pretty much all the F-22 pilots say thats the one feature that is useless in a jet was the voice recognition system? It cost a ton of money and very few pilots used it. Honestly being able to navigate menus with a simple intuitive menu system layout would probably work better.
Here’s hoping Japan is able to bring these systems to fruition, Japan’s naval prowess isn’t a problem it’s Japan’s aling Air Force which should’ve been constantly updated. It is simple they can buy use products and develop some of their own. They do not need to do it all by them self. Japan does not need an F-22 or anything like it. It needs a large enough air force and a good radar detection system.

I honestly see no reason why Japan can’t develop an aircraft that’s every bit as good as the F22, maybe even better in certain areas even. I hope for them that they can do so if they feel the need for it.
At worse I think their program will end up being classified as a 5th generation jet that can control drones. (Assuming they actually make it.) Part of me believes the US will be the one who can truly create and define something that is 6th generation.
Interesting video. Though much of the information about Japan's new fighters was already public, I was particularly surprised by two items; using glue instead of rivets to fasten portions of the body together and replacement of hydraulic actuator systems with electronic motors. Though other systems have changed tremendously over the years, these methods have been stalwarts since the beginnings of military aircraft engineering. Use of hydraulics over electric motors was a mainstay because electric motors could never match the tremendous torque and ruggedization requirements of hydraulics to achieve the power necessary to overcome massive needs to power actuators in supersonic flight. Similarly, the use of seemingly archaic rivet fasteners over glue was always a statement of the well known barriers of the chemical adhesives science. That these two have now advanced means that key technologies have finally overcome problems in novel and surprising ways. Much of these I think would stem from Elon Musk's tech requirements for his technically advanced EC's forcing huge industrial changes.

I live in Japan and its super common to see signs written in English but spelt with the Japanese pronunciation For example at work there's a sign a gondola and cooperation, however spelt Gondora and Corporation, both signs have been up for years and are found in almost 200 locations. It's quite common to spot these funny things as you travel about too.
The video and aircraft are great. Japan given it's place in the world and the threats it has near by does need to create it's own equipment in some cases and I see this as a ideal big start to it.
The multiple drone wingman design feature reminded me of the funnel laser cannons controlled by new type pilots in the Gundam series. I can’t wait to see the testing phase of this aircraft.
I've been doing a lot of reading lately about the 'Pacific Theatre' of WW2. If Japan has been able to exorcise all vestiges of pre'45 Militarism, surely Japan's proWest credentials, combined with it's national intelligence capabilities, surely a few F-22's have less of a security risk for US tech than handing the Aussies 8 nuclear subs based on the Virginia or Astute classes? This is a significant step for Japan. Let's hope Japan continues to walk in the right direction.

I think bigger planes are the way to go. A dual pilot configuration might be ideal, depending on the volume of tech that needs to be actively managed by the pilot(s). If local drone swarm management is on the docket, for example, then a second pilot with an AR helmet might be necessary. JAF will always be at a numbers disadvantage AND in a defensive posture in their region, so they need a fighter that's adapted for those circumstances.
Drones will operate autonomous and the pilot will just assign a task. Or even better: a given task is engaged by the drones and the plane in an embedded way. Technology will replace human interaction and is far more capable. Remember humans are the limit in military aviation.
@TurtleDuck That's completely backwards. One would want to have force multipliers like UAVs that can accept tasks on the fly. So instead of 2 pilots in one plane, you can have 1 pilot controlling 5, or 2 pilots controlling 10. Probably already happening, for the US that is.
The Godzilla looks remarkably similar to the YF23 Black Widow 5th generation prototype from Northrup-Grumman. If it is derived from the Black Widow, it will easily match the famed F-22 Raptor. The F-22 is almost universally recognized as the ultimate fighter in use today
In my headcanon, the Black Widow will always surpass the F-22. By at most 1 generation. Even computer/video games back in the day had the same idea. YF-23 > F-22. The closest anime analogy I could think of is the Wing Gundam Zero which existed only on paper for 2 decades because there were no resources or even technology to build it back then.

Yes they have been working on more development as the projects progress. How far this will go we will need to wait and see. The meteor missile is getting a new Japanese Aesa seeker. Japan leads the world is some areas and between the uk, Sweden, Italy and Japan the projects will produce fantastic aircraft.

Chinese ELINT gathering, with an actual stealth fighter, would be a clever move. The radar bands and intensity would provide them the best abilities to customise their stealth potential.
There are so many things wrong with this upload. Here's just a couple. Japan doesn't just have the F-15 is their only modern fighter. The also use the F-16 and the Japanese version the F-2, which looks like the F-16, but is bigger than the American F-16. With the upgrades done, they are not the same aircraft of the 70's. Thay are also anything but unhappy with the F-35. Japan is ordering them by the dozens. You stated that Japan isn't happy about its conventional takeoff limitations. The Japanese order was for the F-35B spec aircraft that is short/vertical takeoff and landing. They were ordered for the Japanese light carrier operations for the Izumo Class ships. That's why they overhauled the desks and hanger space.
Japan's research and development is way advance than you think, they usually make new tech prototypes 5 to 10yrs. or more ahead of the current tech that average person use and i'm not surprise if they will be deliver this tech with flying colors ^_^

If Japan puts its mind to technical innovation ..they'll come up with something special. And in the background, their allies will help. As pissed as I am to this day over the DoD putting thousands of blueprints for both the F35 and F22 on a single gd server system so that China could hack it and gain decades of research in a moment... it is of great relief to see Japan and Mitsubishi as great allies. Love the look of this new fighter, and Japan is not just copying but helping to grow the state of the art for the allies' next gen fighters. Just when we are starting to need them the most, as well!
The US regularly used to do that during the cold war to the Russians so that they would then go and waste their time trying to copy something. It is one of the reasons the Russian Concorde that they intended to build a military version of failed. It is the reason why Russian missiles are of a terrible quality.
The number of missiles is unimportant ! The best missile is now the Meteor missile and 2 such can take out 2 enemy-planes at 200 km distance and there is no way to avoid the Meteor

I think Japan is going to shock everyone, I was in this industry and I retired early but one thing I know for sure is Japan's knowledge and innovation are going to be a major factor. If they do indeed receive help from the U.S. government (Northop Grumman/Ratheon) this platform could be comparable to NGAD/FA-XX and Tempest. I hope they pull it off but it's going to be 2035ish.
This is an extremely ambitious project they'll cancel the program before a prototype is even made.
Japan would be best served buying a few Dozen S Koreans new F-21Jet as a Stop Gap until theyre New Jet is ready.With AESA Radar and METEOR Missiles , there only chance is flying at 50,000 at Low Mach and launching Scram Jet powered Long Range Meteors and then getting out of Dodge..

Because the people who lived through WW2 are now mostly dead.
Those parsimonious "tax payers" have always been short-sighted (liberal or libertarian). The Cold War spending created the technology base that has driven our economy to great heights for 45 years. All that money didn't go down a hole. Those engineers, technicians, and factory workers recycled all that government investment right back into our economy, (unlike tax cuts for rich people who just hoard everything for their children).
I agree with our withholding the F-22 technology because it was so far advanced at the time. But clearly we realize that the tech is no longer so special - so we are now selling the F-35 to the world. That's how we keep the price down. (An F-35 now costs less per unit than the latest F-16. It's only the maintenance that is still costly.)
But if we push everyone to build their own fighters rather than buy ours, it is OUR LOSS. That's money WE LOSE that would go right into our economy. Penny wise and pound foolish Jerome.

Yeah, that small part had quite a few inaccuracies. I don't think we'll ever see another Su-57 manufactured, to be honest. They don't even have a single squadron's worth and with sanctions they will never be able to source materials and import the tech required.

People don't realize that building and producing a high tech fighter is only a part of the puzzle. Maintaining the air craft and keeping systems operational are very labor intensive and expensive.

I'm so glad that the Japanese are doing this. It's wise, prudent and helps restore the Japanese fighting machine. No one has ever said the Japanese weren't totally courageous, but like us, the wisdom required to operate that fighting ability has been abused in the past.
I just think it's dope that they can now say they can summon the wrath of Godzilla.
Its crazy that Japan and England are both building 5th/6th generation fighters on their own, the budget to develop these things are insane. I agree with you though Japan needs it, budget wise it probably made more sense to buy F35's though.

This is what would have happened if you combined the best of the F-18, F-22 and F-35 in terms of capability, speed and payload. This is going to be something to seriously watch.
Idea now is to start producing Super 22's now that the F35 manufacturing process has gotten more efficient. Reason for the cost of the F22 is because so many manufacturers spread out through the US had to coordinate parts and such. Centralize that effort, and now you can create a stealth fighter on a budget.

But the US always has something in store, I’m excited to see this thing if it actually comes together- sounds a bit too good to be true but time will tell.

They are working on a new 6th Generator fighter that hopefully will be more cost effective and have a better operational ready rate. Supposedly the Air Force is trying to streamline development so you can come up with new fighters faster at a lower cost. Its kind of a cool idea really, it allows you to be more adaptive to changing threats/conditions.
@@fwix771 If you do some reading on what's out there, the "chrome" is likely a printed thin-film technology. If hazarding a guess it's closely related to the same process that mass-prints out RFID tags. (In the case of tags it's cut into thousands of teeny little stickers, but for this it's left as an entire large sheet.) Basically it takes one incoming RF frequency and then returns that energy across a whole bunch of frequencies, which spreads out the power of the incoming RADAR signal. Even though it's production process could be considered more involved (printing thin laminate films of a metallized semi-conductor), it ends up being a lot cheaper and way more robust than other RAM because it simply goes on like a big sticker rather than a convoluted painting process with a peculiar curing process that results in something possibly fragile. It's also interesting because it could be quickly applied to older aircraft and reduce their radar returns, even if they weren't designed with stealth in mind.
It's not explained in any particular patent I could find, but you can find enough patents out there relating to thin-film antennas that would support this premise for a plausible explanation. Silver and graphene seem to have good properties for this, so that might explain its color. It doesn't just look silver, but actually is silver (albeit a few microns thick).

I think this project has now merged with BAE Systems Tempest. The partnership was announced at the Farnborough Airshow 2022 on July 18, 2022. Japan and the UK run parallel programs both aimed at designing the next generation of fighters. The Tempest project involves the UK's BAE Systems and Rolls-Royce, the European missile manufacturer MBDA, and Italy's Leonardo.

It will be very interesting to see what Japan designs. They are very intelligent and advanced in technology. Curious how they put it to use.
They've pretty much said what they want. They want the capabilities of the F35 in a larger twin engine fighter that will have more range and more payload.
Japan is surprisingly not very technological these days. They love optimizing old technologies and standards instead of adopting new ones. They live in the 1990/2000's idea of what the future might be, rather than in 2022. They have long since relinquished the mantle of Asian innovation superpower and now South Korea, Taiwan and China fight for it. You can even see it in their cars. Conservative, proven technology optimized to the Nth degree.
Furthermore, their education system values discipline and execution over creative thinking, which perpetuates this state of affairs.
I don't see this endeavour changing that, and would not be surprised if misguided political and Zaibatsu interference either kills it or leads to a camel.
There is no Japanese design to look forward, only the British Tempest design which Japan joined. The F-X program is dead.

Israel would be required to shell out tens of billions of dollars of its own money to join the Tempest which Israel can't afford. Israel is stuck with US fighter jets made available via US military aid funding only.

Japan is one incredible culture of excellence. Their history is amazing and every time I visit I’m amazed by pretty much everything. They can easily build one of the most state of the art 6th generation fighters.
Japan's a wonderful country & the people are fantastic. They were a staunch US ally during the cold war & still have great relations with the US today. I'm highly confident Japan's stealth fighter program will produce a fantastic aircraft & will be a tremendous asset to defense in the pacific.

You forgot to mention that Lockheed is helping them develop this plane. Since they were unable to purchase the F22 they did the next best thing and had the creator of the F22 help in creating their own replacement.

I remember reading about cold plasma sheilding decades ago, makes you wonder exactly what the 6th gen fighter that America has already built and testing is capable of.
From what I've gathered, they're split between actually developing a functioning shield system and a laser-based defensive system. The shield technology is already being deployed through the Iter project, but converting it to a weapons platform will be tricky, to say the least.
Plasma sheilding requires huge amount of energy, they already considered it as a sheild for tanks but it ate most of the space in an APC, take note, its an APC , there is not enough room for the system to be fitted inside a MBT which is already cramped and weighs over 60 tonnes

I think you will find the Japanese were severely limited in the weapons they were allowed to develop post WW11 ! Thus their forces are known as "Self Defence " probably one of the most technically advanced country in the world .
Doesn't mean a lot. The US changed the name from the Department of War, to the Department of Defense. I think Japan and South Korea are well aware that they need to step up their military forces to match the growing military threat from China.

@@martintan4982 The reason US didn't sell the F22 to Japan was not because of a fear of them overtaking the USA in power (although you're probably right), but instead, it was to protect the technologies of the F22 like stealth. There could be many chinese/russian spies in Japan who would happily steal all that info about the F22, so that's why it was never sold to Japan.
Also, the US is selling the F35 to Japan.
@@martintan4982 Japan isn't remotely in competition with the US. Japan flies about 250 fixed wing aircraft, none of which are bombers. It's chiefly air superiority. They'd defeat North Korea one on one. And given Russia's dismal performance, maintenance and spread out air fields, they could probably fight them to a standstill before their Ukrainian losses.
China is the real potential adversary of Japan. Together with U.S. aircraft carriers and a few other NATO allies, they'd have to take on the 2,000+ air force of China. Their numbers are impressive and the specs are mostly Russian knockoffs. But China has zero experience in modern air combat so their tactics and capabilities are a big question mark. Apparently they are hiring some former NATO pilots to advise them there.

Japan cannot overtake the US that is the thing. For them to do that they would need to build a US style system with a constitution that is identical and then spend a good 100 years developing their new economic culture. And then maybe just then Japan would be not that far behind the US.
Considering the precarious nature of American politics and our propensity for long dark periods of foreign policy insanity one could hardly blame Japan for their decision. One thing does surprise me however. And that’s the advertised time frame to introduce these new aircraft. It seems likely that a handoff of technology to the Japanese has already taken place. Much like with the new Korean stealth fighter. The Japanese, Koreans and the Taiwanese are absolutely too valuable as partners to risk their lost to the Chinese or Russians.
I feel like this plane is in a whole class of its own, a little bigger then f-22, carry more payload and go further sounds like a damn fighter's stealth bomber, if this plane does deliver all that, will by far be the most advanced plane yet

Japan simply does not need anything like an F-22 to defend its island. What it needs is a large competent air force with systems similar to F-16 and F-15. And a good early warning detection system that allows them to control the air space.

I think the helmet HUD idea is good, but didn't pretty much all the F-22 pilots say thats the one feature that is useless in a jet was the voice recognition system? It cost a ton of money and very few pilots used it. Honestly being able to navigate menus with a simple intuitive menu system layout would probably work better.

Interesting video. Though much of the information about Japan's new fighters was already public, I was particularly surprised by two items; using glue instead of rivets to fasten portions of the body together and replacement of hydraulic actuator systems with electronic motors. Though other systems have changed tremendously over the years, these methods have been stalwarts since the beginnings of military aircraft engineering.
Use of hydraulics over electric motors was a mainstay because electric motors could never match the tremendous torque and ruggedization requirements of hydraulics to achieve the power necessary to overcome massive needs to power actuators in supersonic flight. Similarly, the use of seemingly archaic rivet fasteners over glue was always a statement of the well known barriers of the chemical adhesives science. That these two have now advanced means that key technologies have finally overcome problems in novel and surprising ways. Much of these I think would stem from Elon Musk's tech requirements for his technically advanced EC's forcing huge industrial changes.
Should have read Godzirra. I live in Japan and its super common to see signs written in English but spelt with the Japanese pronunciation For example at work there's a sign a gondola and cooperation, however spelt Gondora and Corporation, both signs have been up for years and are found in almost 200 locations. It's quite common to spot these funny things as you travel about too.
The video and aircraft are great. Japan given it's place in the world and the threats it has near by does need to create it's own equipment in some cases and I see this as a ideal big start to it.

The multiple drone wingman design feature reminded me of the funnel laser cannons controlled by new type pilots in the Gundam series. I can’t wait to see the testing phase of this aircraft.

I've been doing a lot of reading lately about the 'Pacific Theatre' of WW2. If Japan has been able to exorcise all vestiges of pre'45 Militarism, surely Japan's proWest credentials, combined with it's national intelligence capabilities, surely a few F-22's have less of a security risk for US tech than handing the Aussies 8 nuclear subs based on the Virginia or Astute classes? This is a significant step for Japan. Let's hope Japan continues to walk in the right direction.

Lockheed has won and built all the Stealth aircraft for America. NG is probably too far behind in practical experience.
I think bigger planes are the way to go. A dual pilot configuration might be ideal, depending on the volume of tech that needs to be actively managed by the pilot(s). If local drone swarm management is on the docket, for example, then a second pilot with an AR helmet might be necessary. JAF will always be at a numbers disadvantage AND in a defensive posture in their region, so they need a fighter that's adapted for those circumstances.
Drones will operate autonomous and the pilot will just assign a task. Or even better: a given task is engaged by the drones and the plane in an embedded way. Technology will replace human interaction and is far more capable. Remember humans are the limit in military aviation.
@TurtleDuck That's completely backwards. One would want to have force multipliers like UAVs that can accept tasks on the fly. So instead of 2 pilots in one plane, you can have 1 pilot controlling 5, or 2 pilots controlling 10. Probably already happening, for the US that is.
The Godzilla looks remarkably similar to the YF23 Black Widow 5th generation prototype from Northrup-Grumman. If it is derived from the Black Widow, it will easily match the famed F-22 Raptor. The F-22 is almost universally recognized as the ultimate fighter in use today
In my headcanon, the Black Widow will always surpass the F-22. By at most 1 generation. Even computer/video games back in the day had the same idea. YF-23 > F-22. The closest anime analogy I could think of is the Wing Gundam Zero which existed only on paper for 2 decades because there were no resources or even technology to build it back then.

Japan's aerospace industry is at best 3rd rate, the fact that they have not designed a frontline fighter, that went into service since WW2, tells you a lot about Japan's aerospace industry.
And the title is just clickbait, China is already way ahead in the 6th gen fighter development, on par with the US.
In fact, the J-20S two seat variant is already testing the Man-Unmanned Teaming system, which the backseat co-pilot controls the drone wingman

There are so many things wrong with this upload. Here's just a couple. Japan doesn't just have the F-15 is their only modern fighter. The also use the F-16 and the Japanese version the F-2, which looks like the F-16, but is bigger than the American F-16. With the upgrades done, they are not the same aircraft of the 70's. The Japanese order was for the F-35B spec aircraft that is short/vertical takeoff and landing. They were ordered for the Japanese light carrier operations for the Izumo Class ships. That's why they overhauled the desks and hanger space.

Japan's research and development is way advance than you think, they usually make new tech prototypes 5 to 10yrs. or more ahead of the current tech that average person use and i'm not surprise if they will be deliver this tech with flying colors ^_^

Love the look of this new fighter, and Japan is not just copying but helping to grow the state of the art for the allies' next gen fighters. Just when we are starting to need them the most, as well!
