My favorite relationship in the wheel of Time is hers with Rand.
I know, right. She was like the cool aunt/big sis that Rand needed.
When Rand and Nynaeve meet again, since The Stone of Tear, after he has been proclaimed the Dagon and she is a full Sister. When he drops his mask and she see that its Rand. One of the most memorable parts in the whole series.

In the Two Rivers, women braid their hair as a sign of reaching adulthood. I think her constant braid tugging started reminder to whomever she was speaking to, particularly those not respecting her authority, and it developed into a tic. And-
"I'm not shouting!" Nynaeve shouted. Best. Line. Ever. Fight me.

Nynaeve is by far my favorite female character, love her attitude and loyalty. Definitely the best girl

Nyneave is my favourite overall, but I don't think she is my top at any point. She is just consistently a strong, flawed character.
I'm actually quite surprised to hear how divisive people are on her (no one in my circle dislikes her)

After Matt she definitely has my favorite character-arc
100% correct. She's one of the best characters in the series, with such a great arc.
I pretty much hate her in every re-read until probably about the point of Knife of Dreams, then she evolves to become someone really awesome as she has moved beyond a lot of her insecurities that made her pretty insufferable for a lot of the prior books.
"I don't know who will be the second, but you for certain", Nynaeve felt strangely proud.
Loved when I read that gave me chills
Rand summarized what is best about Nyanaeve at one point: "Cadsuane wants me to live so I can fight the last battle. You want me to live because you actually care about me."
That she refuses to accept that some things can't be healed and takes it personally is why she is so good at it.
I hated her as a teenager lol, but now that I'm a father she is my favorite character in the series. Guess I just had to grow up before I got her.
Outside of the big 3 (Rand, Mat, Perrin) I would argue that Nynaeve does/is involved with the most important things in the series: she's part of the circle that fixes the weather with the bowl of winds, she heals gentling/stilling, is part of Rand's link to cleanse the male half of the power, help Rand by caring when he won't let himself and aiding Cadsuane in teaching Rand laughter and tears, goes with Rand to face the Dark One in his prison, uses her herbs to keep Alanna alive to prevent Rand going mad. On top of all the other things she does... yep, great character
Ahh, Nynaeve! The most believable character in WoT.
Just to add something that is not usually commented of her character, and most precisely WHY she behaves the way she does.
We know she orphaned early. First her mother died when she was around 8. Her father hadn't remarried, instead he did the best he could and rised her as she was his son. In the most self defying period of her live, Nynaeve hadn't had a woman role model. Then her father died when she was around 14. Again rough period when the girls starts to turn into woman. She is too young to deal with her life, yet too old to be taken care from random woman in Two Rivers. The only one who could is the previous Wisdom. Our tomboyish Nynaeve suddenly has not only a Woman role model, but the Matriarch of the village for role model. Eventually she became her apprentice. As such she hadn't needed diplomacy, nor being gentle for the Wisdom 's word in their village was the law. And she gladly adopted the behaviour needed for being the Wisdom. Fast forward, Nynaeve became the next village Matriarch, she's more that good in her job and all her decisions get questioned by people who, in her eyes, can't find their asses with map opened before them.
OF COURSE she would behave like harpy.
Even in the darkest moments of Rand's life during TGS, he still trusted Nynaeve, because she cares for others and she was one of the few working to make him want to live past Tarmon Gai'don.

My second favorite character after Mat. The two most loyal people in the series, if you are looking for someone to have your back she is it. Something that I don't see mentioned in regards to channeling is WILL. She wins battles because she refuses to lose, because in her thought if she does people she cares about and love will get hurt. this is admirable.

wait until your mid thirties, the entire year from 33-34 was horrifying. Death, I swear was around every corner. As all of the actors I grew up with are dying, and my music is now being played on "classic rock" sheesh. Then I had the talk with an older Aunt of "just wait until your 40's" lol. Life is a crazy cycle.
Nynaeve is hands down my favorite female character in the series. She is a hero through and through, and her devotion to Rand, and in turn his trust in her is so critical to so many of the really important events that happen all the way up to the last battle.

The most telling of Nynaeve's character is that Rand totally trusts her. She answers his need without hesitation while Egwene, whom he once loved, questions his decisions and even battles with him. Her loyalty is total
Her speech to the Malkieri about Lan riding to tarmon gaidon always gets me hype. Nynaeve is my favorite female character most of the time, only splitting some time with Siuan. They're scrap in TAR always makes me laugh out loud because it is so realistic and relatable. Nynaeve is GOAT.

Single handedly making sure the battle at tarwins gap isn't a complete rout✓
Making Moghedien her bitch✓
And she keeps Alanna alive with HERBS so rand doesn't lose his mind fighting the dark one, literally saving existence her own way like a boss.

@@deanmoxley1868 man I forgot about that too, damn she's so OP. It would almost be too much if it wasn't for her block and Jordan using the issues stemming from it to showcase her personality. The scene where she finally breaks it is one of the best in the series.

I've never understood the hate Nynaeve got. I pretty much fell in love immediately, and only grew to appreciate and respect her even more, as I realized what a genuinely caring and loving person she was.

She is the only person who doesnt seem to make emediate assumptions and if she does and they aren't correct isnt so stubborn to keep it up and changes her views.

I thuoght Min to be very dramatic but other than that she is pretty cool. I think all the girls that like Rand kinda ended up with a little less personality(like flaws, strengths, etc.). I don't think every single girl in the series needs to be into someone yk.

Just the fact that Nynaeve’s block can be overcome when she feels so angry that someone is hurt shows how much empathy she has for people, that alone shows how driven she is to care for others.
Her relationship with Egwene is an interesting one. I relate it to myself being the youngest of three sisters. They will always have that protective aspect to get over but now as independent adults they have to learn that my opinions and actions are as valid as theirs. Nynaeve accepts this and always it to grow into a new relationship of contemporaries. She doesn’t try to hold Egwene back, she doesn’t get caught up in jealousy, she is proud to let her grow which is really mature and loving.
I agree whole heartedly with this. While yes I can see how some would find her irritating and childishly stubborn, I completely understand her in my bones. She is by far one of my favorite characters because of how protective and loving she is. It hurts my heart when people bad mouth her, so thank you for this!
I love nynaeve, she is so funny. My favourite scene of her is when Rand tells Aviendha, Min and Elayne that he loves all of them and she goes mental 🤣🤣

Nyneave is my favorite character. I relate to her for the same reasons you listed at the end of the video.
She and Rand are also the only two characters to be present at the most pivotal and age defining moments in the Age, the Cleansing of Saidin, and the final confrontation with the Dark One.
I like when she helped him cleanse saidin, but that's about it - she's about as annoying as Egwene which, is quite annoying
Thank you! This is an old video by this point, but there are some very valid points that encompasses the character.
She goes from very insecure village wisdom to insecure Aes Sedai. She has a breakthrough in realizing that she is as strong as one of the forsaken, but she also is well aware of her weakness with her block.
When she finally achieves control of her channeling, that is the point where she acknowledges her faults and flaws as a human being which is what makes her able to let Lan go to the gab. Also she is now able to inspire instead of bullying because she knows the limitations of her character and she knows what she is capable of. The evidence of this is her speech to the merchant where she convinces him (and others) to join Lan in TLB. She isn't forceful or even brash... she is inspiring them to fulfill their oath. She is in complete control.
Most amazing of all, she is described similar to Moiraine is by the two-rivers folk in EotW. She no longer needs to be jealous and brash, because she has become this confident woman that Moiraine was back then.
Have to agree with you Daniel. My second read through really solidified a deeper appreciation for her.

Why does everyone always think Rand, Mat, and Perrin are 18? They're 20! Rand was born at the very end of the Aiel war, which was 20 years earlier. That's like stated 100 times by the first half of the series. And Mat and Perrin were born within weeks of Rand.

Its easy to misunderstand because there is also a lot of comment about girls in Emonds Field braiding their hair when they become adult and how its such a bit deal that Egwene is about to start braiding her hair, most people dont naturally assimilate being allowed to braid your hair at TWENTY YEARS OLD...and Egwene is also close in age to the boys.
Nynaeve my girl! :-D To be fair it took a while before she became my all time favorite female in WoT. She had her share of epic moments in the first six books but her immense power was always blocked (heh) by her block. And my surge of joy at her overpowering it in book seven underwhelmed me the first time becasue that was when I hit the year and a half wait for the next book, which was NOT one of my favorites once it came out.
But a re-read when it was close to completion (Sanderson's first book had just come out and I realized we would get an end to the series after all) I really got how epic she actually was. To heal STILLING in two woman and a man on the same day, something that even Aes Sedai of the Age of Legends did not think possible, find a cure of sort from at least saidin instilled madness if not other brain related illnesses over time. Standing toe to toe with a forsaken TWICE, besting her the second time. One of the most powerful wielder of the power in 3000 years.
Not to mention - though we can't discount MIn on this (you CAN'T CUT MIN, FOR THE CREATORS SAKE. ARE YOU MAD!) on holding Rand sane/stable enough until he found himself the man he needed to be. And speaking of Rand, she helped him cleanse saidin, another epic feat.
But that is just (some of) the things she DID. And yes, she might be a bit... abrasive at times but she is an intelligent, very kind an generous person and is a far better Aes Sedai when raised than many who claimed she shawl before her.
And she and Lan deserve each other. Not the least because if she met me she would berate me up one side and down the other for being a lazy bum and tell me to get my fat ass out of that chair and do something with my life other than writing long essays in the TH-cam comment section. ;-)
And thats why we love her.

I love Nynaeve, she is my favorite character. I loved her from the moment she made an appearance in the books. She's just so loyal, loving and protective of those she loves and she has such a determined mind. She has so many awesome moments in the books and to be completely honest I NEVER found her irritating. I see some of myself in her and can relate to her so that's probably why. I just love her relationships with the boys and Egewne and her romance with Lan is my favorite romance as well as Rand and Min. Great review Daniel.

Gosh, Nynaeve was honestly my fave at the end. Every step of her progress made me so happy, and, in so many ways, I felt myself relating so strongly to her. I did not know people hated Nynaeve. Her braid tugging will always be the most iconic quirk in the series for me!!!
Don’t forget that she also helped cleanse Saidin.

Nyneave is one of my favorite characters. She reminds me of many women I know in my life and actually makes me feel like the world is more fleshed out with her character building.
I just love Nynaeve. What I like most about her is why she embarks on her journey.

One of the most important scenes in all of the books about Nynaeve is when she tells Lan that she tracked them. Lan's reaction is one of the most respectful things, and it is a very subtle moment but as you read about her it speaks volumes about her character. She did not understand why Lan would be impressed with her tracking ability. Nynaeve may want respect, but she doesn't always recognize when it is given. She is as naive in the ways of the world as those she seeks to protect but she at least recognizes there is a larger threat even if it is not to the level of Moraine and Lan.
She's one of my favorite characters in the series, and her relationship with Rand is one of my favorite relationships period. I'm terrible at getting romance though, it basically took me till sometime in the middle of book to to start thinking Nyneave might be in a relationship with Lan, lol. You should do Aviendha next, I always found her very interesting.

I absolutely LOVE Nynaeve. Hands down one of my top 5 characters for WoT
I cry everytime I think of Nynaeve. When no one was there for Rand, Nynaeve was always there. Even through his madness, she believes in him. She didn't even have any second thoughts when Rand asked her to be with him at the Bore. She was always there. She's like a mother figure to Rand. I love her so much.
Later 2 3rds of the Series? Are you kidding? By book 7, she is just beginning to make that turn, after fighting it so hard it made my teeth crack!
The braid tugger
Nynaeve is the classic female love interest and/or female co-hero and/or companion for the main hero. In a normal fantasy she'd be Rand's lone love interest, in order to play on the trope of a power couple (in a normal fantasy Mat would have married Elayne, and Perrin would have married Min), however the wheel of time is no normal fantasy. she plays the same roll as the typical love interest/power couple girl at all the major turning points, yet she has her own love with someone not the MC, and the MC has his own love live as well. I always loved Rand/Nynaeve's dynamic. Furthermore, she's the best written female character in the whole series, she goes through a whole character growth arc like a main character in a fantasy novel, something none of her friends ever have (egwene comes close those her character growth is more of a straight line then anything else, elayne never has any character growth).
I'm glad you pointed out how filled with love Nynaeve is. She's easily the most compassionate and empathetic character in the series, she wears her feelings on her sleeve, and it's why I think, Rand, even dark twisted suspicious rand never doubted his trust in her. They have this fantastic big sister little brother dynamic.
Even at her most annoying, her parts of the books were always my favorite. I loved her adventures in Tarabon, or when she rescued Eqwene from the seanchan. The way she slowly grew up (yes she was always in desperate need for confidence, so she tried to fake it until she made it for most of the books, but when she found it, her blossoming was incredible, and in a lot of ways paralleled Rand's own transition from frustration and anger at his fate to acceptance.
Here is just one example of why I love Nyneave...(after she beat (and shielded) Moghedion in The Shadow Rising) "Nynaeve expected her to leap for her throat, for that is what she would have done" ...
I think Nynaeve is Eldrene ay Ellan ay Carlan, the Queen of Manetheren, reincarnated. When Moiraine describes her and Aemon in Tellings of the Wheel, from The Eye of the World.
she says.
"Eldrene, so beautiful that it was said the flowers bloomed to make her smile. Bravery and beauty and wisdom and a love that death could not sunder. Weep, if you have a heart, for the loss of them, for the loss of even their memory. Weep for the loss of their blood."
That is how I see Nynaeve. Brave, beautiful, and wise. She willingly goes to Shayol Ghul with Rand. She heals stilling, compulsion and helps Rand cleanse Saidin, There is no one other than The Dragon who is more awesome than her and I would trust her with the fate of the world.
Sure she is prickly but I have not met many beautiful capable women who are not.
So happy that her and Lan survived they deserve it but the plot seemed determined for at least one of them to die.
A couple of great moments with her;
Nynaeve wastes no time in Traveling to Myrelle and demands Lan's bond.
"I have never thanked you," she said, though she had to grit her teeth to get the words out. "I do so now. He lives because of you. I realize that. However, Myrelle, this is not a time to push me. Today, I have seen people I love slaughtered, I have been forced to consign children to living torment. I have been burned, scourged, and harrowed. I swear to you, woman, if you do not pass me Lan's bond this very moment, I will step into that tent and teach you the meaning of obedience. Do not press me. In the morning, I swear the Three Oaths. I'm free of them for one more night." -Nynaeve to Myrelle[3]
"My name is el'Nynaeve ti al'Meara Mandragoran. The message I want sent is this. My husband rides from World's End toward Tarwin's Gap, toward Tarmon Gai'don. Will he ride alone?" and after encountering resistance, she says: "Lan told me once that Malkier lives so long as one man wears the hadori in pledge that he will fight the Shadow, so long as one woman wears the ki'sain in pledge that she will send her son to fight the shadow. I wear the ki'sain, Master Aldragoran. My husband wears the hadori. So do you. Will Lan Mandragoran ride to the Last Battle alone?"

She is the best!!!
I can think of to accomplishments that easily surpass healing severing and madness. Numaeve was instrumental in the cleansing of Saidin and PROPERLY reimprisoning Shaitan.
Nynaeve is my absolute favorite character in the Wheel of Time. I love Mat, but as far as depth of character goes Nynaeve is like an onion. Thanks for giving her some love!

Daniel I just gotta say I LOVE your WoT videos. I accidentally stumbled on The Eye of the World in a Thrift Store around '94, the cover art drew me in, I instantly fell in love with Jordan's writing. Tell me do you find yourself rereading Jordan's battle scenes over and over? I've read some of his battle scenes a half dozen times.

Nyneave was a character that annoyed the hell out of me in the first and half of book 2 , then somehow without me hardly noticing i would shout silently in my head YES !! more of nyneave ....she became one of my 3 fav characters . so well written and it is to my knowledge the first time i have started out hating a character to being quite simply in awe of her. just simply bravo Robert Jordan....you are most certainly missed. oh and brilliant channel daniel my number youtuber in any context.love from glasgow

Nynaeve is going to be real hard to cast. After all, how can you find somebody with a sniffing habit and anger management issues in Hollywood ;-)
She always was and always will be my favourite character in the books... closely followed by Egwene. I love her relationships and how they grow and also how she is with Lan. She learns to recognise authority better than everyone else while still seeing that she can be strong.
Healing severing is an achievement even in the Age of Legends. Healing Madness was possibly also not available. She is also able to perform brain surgery to undo compulsion.
Nynaeave is so under rated and her dynamic with Rand and all the rest from the two Rivers is fantastic

My partner and I both have had different feelings about Nynaeve over time. I'd be interested to hear if any other long-time/repeat readers have noticed a similar shift.
At this point, I see her as a bit of a bully, but I also see that as having been a necessity in her life in Emond's field, and I respect that she was able to stand up to everyone and become a community leader despite her young age. As she gets more out of her element, she learns to defer to others, albeit with a lot of difficulty, which I would expect given her personality.
Nynaeve is like the mom friend of the group.

I truly love this video. Nyaneve is my all time favorite female characters in fiction to date. A Character that has such glaring flaws in her personality makes her feel real to me and yes she’s obnoxious but I love her for it all the same.

I have mixed feelings, but by the Pattern do I love and respect this bullheaded, braided, beautiful Wisdom. Eventually. I mean, she drove me mad for a long time, but I completely agree with her insistence for some FUCKING RESPECT from the local elite and these elitist foreigners who look down their ever young noses at wildlings. I love Nyneave! Great character analysis. I love her determination and desire to heal and care for everyone. Most characters only get one or two really flushed out relationships but she has several. Her POV when she is going through the borderlands to recruit people to follow Lan to Tarwins Gap is the only scene that brings tears to my eyes every single time!
The only thing that bugs me is how much she hates apologizing. It just seems weird to me - maybe I apologize too much/unnecessarily but it doesn't seem like it should be such a big deal. Like, even given her irrationalities and character quirks, I think RJ overdid it with that particular character flaw. Elayne makes SUCH a huge deal over when she does actually apologize that it's cringeworthy. I can understand (though not agree with) her treatment of Mat for the most part - but again, too much of a fuss was made over her apologizing to him.
I love Nynaeve PRECISELY because she's a BIT of a bitch. She's inconsistent, an emotional wreck with serious anger issues and acts like a silly teenager in love with Lan and KNOWS it because she's self aware and honest enough to admit it to herself (even if she's murder ANYONE else for observing it)
She is so great BECAUSE she's a complete, flawed person. Her loyalty, compassion and strength make her a hero, or flaws make her compelling. And those flaws are VERY believable and absolutely built from in her backstory.
The fact she's insecure over her lack of years, but has TOTAL confidence in her abilities to the point she will not admit even the most obvious of errors. The fact she attempts to terrorise absolutely everyone into doing as she says, but that the very core of her being is one of absolute love. I see a lot of the women in my family in Nynaeve. Hearts of gold, but often hidden under callous and thorn.
100% Spot on analysis. I loved her Charakter from the Start and found moiraine nearly as irritating as nyneave. At least in the beginning. 😉
On a side note, I just thought of something... what if the TV show shows a portrayal of the panic in Emond's field once they learn the kids have gone off with strangers during an attack. Can you imagine the panic especially putting into real world standards??
Nynaeve is the perfect fantasy character. Period.
I'd like to see what you can do with Lan.
I have to say Nyneave is my favorite female character. I can see how her stubbornness can be aggravating, but I find it endearing. Shes shown to be reasonable and change course when it counts. But that's just my opinion.
