    Happy birthday James Watt. I hated history at school but my ears always pricked up if a Scotsman was mentioned. Can’t get enough history now. Thanks 👍

    Some very interesting information about an inventor I knew very little about. Thank you for the video. Seems as if the world owns a great bit of thanks to many Scottish men and women!

    Parallel motion is for the pumping of mines and not for rotary motion .It changes an arc motion into a reciprocating (up and down motion ) The crank is used for changing reciprocating motion into rotary motion.

    One of the former Bishops of British Columbia was from Greenock, where he trained for his first career as an engineer. While at school he won something called the Hammerman's Prize. The papers came round to talk to him about it, much to his surprise. But it turned out that he was only the second person from Greenock ever to have won it. The other chap's name was Watt.

    Fun fact Robert Fulton who was born about twenty miles from where I am from in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania travelled to Europe and worked with James Watt. Robert Fulton invented the first steamship in America, the Claremont, also the first submarine, which Napolean helped to finance the Nautilus. Fulton changed Commerce here in America helped to transport goods by water here.

      I don't think building the first steamship in America counts as an invention! no doubt a memorable event but not an invention.

    Britain from 1800 to 1900.
    20,000 Waterwheels decreased in number.
    Windmills decreased in number.
    Englishman Thomas Newcomen's 1,500 Atmospheric Pumps disappeared.
    Scotsman James Watt's 500 Steam Engines and their descendants increased in number to 10,000,000 !!!
    For every SINGLE Waterwheel in 1800 we now had an additional 500 Steam Engines in 1900 !!!
    And you don't need a river of flowing water for each one either, so they can be sited anywhere!
    That's an increase in Power Capacity and so, for Productive Capacity for the whole country of 500 times. That WAS the Industrial Revolution!
    It's never happened before and I would say it won't happen again.
    The Industrial Revolution was the result of only one single Invention. James Watt's Invention of the world's first PRACTICAL Steam Powered Engine.
    Nothing to do with those " 27 Inventions of Industrial Revolution " etc.etc.etc.
    Also nothing to do with Spinning and Weaving, that was the result of unfair trading practices.

  • @frederickbowdler8169
    @frederickbowdler8169 ปีที่แล้ว

    strange how we credit one person with inventions when its obvious that hundreds of people were involved from ,Cornish men to French and the English .

    • @gordonsscotland8441
      @gordonsscotland8441  ปีที่แล้ว

      I understand your point, Frederick, but I feel it's right that historians generally pick one person, whose involvement, often at a crucial moment, leads to the general acceptance and/or greater use of the invention.
      The same issue is present in many inventions - telephone, electricity, television, etc, etc.
      I suspect Apple will be given the credit, far in the future, of inventing our mobile phone lives, although there were obviously many other players involved!
      Kind regards
      Gordon

    James Watt dumped Thomas Newcomen's Atmospheric Power for High Pressure Steam Power.
    This is never ever mentioned in all the videos I've seen, except in a couple of foreign ones. ( odd ? ).
    To achieve this he had to invent a new engine.
    The world's first practical High Pressure Steam Engine.
    Even a 100% efficient Newcomen pump would only give 14.7psi. of Atmospheric Pressure.
    Efficiency is a red herring.
    The optional separate condenser didn't apply to Newcomen's atmospheric pump, it applied to his own High Pressure Steam Engine.
    It made his own engine more efficient by recycling hot water, and eliminating atmospheric pressure.
    Atmospheric pressure opposes a High Pressure Steam Engine.
    It also allows the use of lower High Pressure Steam which, the very first High Pressure Steam Engines needed.

      I think the condenser was the invention, that improved the already existing steam engine. So he may have redesigned the steam engine but didn't invent the whole steam engine. Unless your saying the Newcomen steam powered engine was not a steam engine at all!

      @@tomnicholson2115
      Yes, Thomas Newcomen's Atmospheric Pump was not a Steam Engine. It provided Atmospheric Power.
      A Steam Engine provides Steam Power, that's why it's called a Steam Engine.
      Like James Watt's Steam Engine, it provided Steam Power.
      Watt's Steam Engine could work without a condenser, but it could use a separate condenser for more efficiency, like recirculating hot water, and eliminating Atmospheric Pressure ( which opposses a Steam Engine).
      It also allowed the engine to work at a lower Steam Pressure, which was good for the very first Steam Engines.
      The separate condenser didn't apply to a Newcomen Atmospheric Pump.
      James Watt dumped Newcomen's Atmospheric Power for Steam Power.
      To achieve that he had to invent a new engine.
      The World's first PRACTICAL Steam Engine.

    newcome Newcome Newcome his friends Darby ,Goldney invented the pickel pot condencer in Bristol and Colbrookdale every thing stems from there work.Whaat was just an improuver.The kettel story also applies toNewcomen.

    • @gordonsscotland8441
      @gordonsscotland8441  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, you are quite right, there were different people involved in steam in the earlier days, especially Thomas Newcomen. I think it is well accepted, however, that Watt's steam engine of 1776 was a major improvement on Newcomen's 1712 design. James Watt's steam engine went on to largely drive the industrial revolution.
