  • I’m back in the studio and getting ready for an upcoming show. I have a few months to make 15 - 18 paintings, and I thought I’d share my process with you over the coming weeks!
Today, I’m pulling out all my recent work to get a wide view of everything I have. These paintings are in various stages, and some are still blank. While looking at the assorted shapes and sizes, I’m becoming familiar with what the show may look like. I want this broad view of the collection before I get too specific.
Now’s the time I ruminate and look for exciting clues about where the work will lead. I typically find it in the panels where I’ve played the most!
If preparing for a show, what helps you envision your collection? Let me know in the comments.
And I’d love to see what you’re working on! if you haven’t already, join us in our Art2Life Artists Facebook Group. There you can post what you are working on with a wonderful community of artists from all over the world!

I LOVE that green over yellow part behind you! I am a new artist, but spend a lot of time looking at and trying to decide what to do next. I am still at the point of having great fear of ruining whatever it is I specifically like about a partially done paintingI. The better I think the paintings beginning is, the worse I feel about doing any more to it and ruining it! It's really driving me crazy. LOL I seem to have developed enough of an "eye" to see what's wrong, but not enough yet to know what to do next...quite the dilemma! Thanks so much for your videos, really informative for me as a brand new artist.

One of the people I follow said to take photos of the work as you go so you can keep pushing it and asking the “what would happen if I did…” anyway her theory is that if you push it too far at least you can refer back to the photo ect. I think it was Gaynor Prattle (UK) or
      Sandi Heist (USA)

I put stuff away and then "find it" and rethink, ponder and focus. Sometimes I put it away again. Sometimes I start over. It's all good.

Great synchronicity with our play week in CVP! 😂it’s a good thing you have that huge studio, and you thought it was too big!! I am making an extra board of my visual vocabulary to jog my memory when I get stuck.
Off to play. I start by skipping to the studio

Great way to get started on preparing for a show. I especially like the idea of having the blank panels out too.

I agree that it's very interesting to see how people put things together. As always, Nick, you're very generous to share your process. Very helpful and encouraging!

I figure it out as I go as well , although I don’t paint abstract ,I paint realism with horses and other animals mainly wild .
Really appreciate your Sunday morning thoughts! Going out to the studio to paint now 😊

I am very similar with how I approach a new body or series of work.
With what I am working on now, I have some ideas in mind which I believe will help me to stay focused and cohesive. How they unfold has to have a lot of looseness though.

Please could you do a video on mixing up enough paint to do a large canvas? I think choosing my colours first for the painting and having enough to slosh around would help with my colour harmony. 🙏

A body of work sounds so professional! I usually have 4-5 pieces in progress that share colors and ideas. I mess around with one, have extra paint to throw on another, very unplanned and organic. It feels like being a short order cook sometimes as I bounce from piece to piece. Later they do look like a family. ❤

So you’re just looking at these old or unused panels for inspiration, not planning to possibly use them as the beginnings of new paintings for the show? If not, why not? I love what you’re sharing here, but I have no clue of what criteria you actually use to pull a show together. Inquiring minds want to know 😅

It’s scary to work so large for me.
