  • Gallantry Awards Given in India for Wartime and Peacetime Valor!
The Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force bestow Gallantry Awards for acts of bravery. These are divided into two categories - Wartime Gallantry Awards and Peacetime Gallantry Awards.
The Wartime Gallantry Awards, instituted from 1947-1950, include the highest Param Vir Chakra (21 recipients), Maha Vir Chakra (213), and Vir Chakra (1336).
The Peacetime Gallantry Awards, instituted from 1952 and renamed in 1967, include the Ashoka Chakra (98), Kirti Chakra (488), and Shaurya Chakra (2125).
Additionally, 9 Service Medals are awarded. All these prestigious honors are conferred by the President of India, the Supreme Commander of the Indian Armed Forces.
This comprehensive system of gallantry awards recognizes the valor and sacrifices of India's military personnel in both wartime and peacetime operations.
