I can see a BRitish sign Language influence. British signs/ or close to them. Still understandable now. Fascinating to talk with someone who still remembers it!

Keep in mind, you cannot compare MVSL to ASL, because ASL is a primary language. MVSL is a regional sign language. Martha’s Vineyard ‘s primary language was Old British signs AND regional is Martha’s Vineyard sign language. We all have regional sign languages across the USA but the primary is ASL today. See what I mean? Need clarification.

We just compared them though. And it was interesting. They are not comparable in every sense of course (especially in the sense of scale and number of users, standardization)

It's a dialect and it grew as people went on/off the island

look up Richard Meier and Justin Power, 2023 latest work proves the reality and shift of the Chilmark research. I also visited myself and saw the reality on ethical considerations of research and data. I will not support shown region signs unless distinguish between ASD and Chilmark’s regional signs. This lady learned from someone who was born in the 1900’s, and that is not supportive.

I watched this with the words hidden and it's amazing how many of the MVSL I 'knew' when Joan signed them despite not knowing any sign language. Language is so cool! ps, I love how the MVSL for scallop looks identical to the animation in animal crossing new horizons of deep sea creatures swimming.

Thank you for a very interesting video.. I just heard about this place, and upset that at 62 Im just learning about this.. I am trying to trace my family roots on this Island and not having any luck. In my family as of today there is approximately 14 generations of deafness, with it starting on Martha vineyard. Is there a way I can find family history on that Island??

I'm a hearing interpreter (ASL), and I have relatives who lived there-hearing. They beat me to it. They learned sign language before I did.. (I'm related to Thomas Mayhew)

Martha’s Vineyard is an island off of Cape Cod. There have been indigenous people living there for centuries and the first settlement of European colonizers arrived in the 1600s. Nothing to do with Martha Stewart.

@@victoriamunoz7504 the island of Martha's Vineyard is named for the mother-in-law or daughter of an English explorer who visited Cape Cod in like 1602, long before Martha Stewart was born
