I beleve that the 3 in wrong font is due to the fact that you accidentally wrote 2 there (which has that font) and then wrote a 3, so there is a bug in the app.

hey i solved this one earlier actually and noticed something weird at the end where there was a uniqueness issue with rows 1 & 2 with the position of the 2's and 3's and then i noticed that one of the 4 corner that being the 2 on row 2 was actually there from the get go so i wonder even if this puzzle has a unique solution does the 2's and 3's setup make it a bad puzzle
Nice spot on the 2s & 3s positioning but, you're quite right, the uniqueness issue is resolved by the initial 2 in row2, col5. In effect this "fixes" one corner of the uniqueness rectangle and ensures the puzzle is ok.

would it make any difference if You pencil marked "2" in block "5" columns "5" and "6" to start

how can I get the NYT app
It is simply on their website as the way it gives you to solve the puzzle. (I think their daily sudokus are free to access).
