This is permanently in my all-time Top-10! The mixing and meshing if her haunting voice and the Stumblefield-Brown "Funky Drummer", drum-break sample, is absolute and pure genius! RIP Sinead!
This album got me through some really tough times. Her voice has to be one of the greatest of all time. She stood up against sexual abuse in the church way before anyone else and sacrificed her sudden rise to superstardom. Singers today would never risk that. She is one of few artists that have a special place in my heart. I will miss her so much. My weekend will be filled with her amazing catalogue of work.
she did not experience sexual abuse in church. she experienced it at the hands of her mother and then other adults in her life. check out the hg tudor series on her.
Ignore all the snarky comments from the hack comedians and talk show hosts. Sinéad was a true original, a beacon of the alt-rock scene and easily one of the greatest artists of her time. Rest easy, Sinéad.
When I was stationed in Okinawa, Japan in 1990, I would play this song on my jambox, and the African-American Marines would come to my bunk, and ask, "Who is that?" Then we went to the Persian Gulf War. May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind be always at your back.
It's that back beat that pulled them in. It's been used on some hip hop tracks as well. I used to mix this with Def Jeff, Black to the Future and X-Clan, Grand Verbalizer.
In the early 90's i lived on Bainbridge Avenue in the Bronx. I would regularly play this on the jukebox in the Innisfree Bar. It just seemed perfect for that time and place, and looking back, it was. RIP Sinead.
"I grieve for the girl that I loved as a child." That's me right now. Sinead was a huge influence on me; her bald head and bold voice challenged the "empowered slut" image of late 80s singers. I pray she found peace.
Hauntingly beautiful and raw as so much of her work. ❤ Among my favorites. Thanks for giving me the soundtrack to some very powerful emotions over the years. Rest in beauty.
We have lost a great woman on this planet. We have gained strength through her pain. We identify with her because she was so human and had several gifts we embelish. Sinead O'Conner we are better because of you. Thank you!
I've saved this here vid to my "Mentors, Leaders, Heros" list. May she be met by the right ancestors. May the right gates be opened unto her. May she be led upon the right path. May she arrive at the right place. For the highest good, truth, and beauty of all our relations. In this generation, and throughout all generations of time. Slán Abhaile Sinéad. Beannacht ar an taobh eile leat.
A beautiful blessing for Sinead, particularly, calling on the "right Ancestors" to bless and guide her. Unusual to find such words but perhaps quite apt for such a courageous soul that was Sinead O' Connor. May she have found the peace that seemed to have eluded her in this incarnation.
RIP We played this song at my daughter's funeral last year ...at that moment the line "All the flowers you planted mother in the back yard all died and withered away ..took on a new meaning. Thanks to Prince for writing this song and thank you for recording it May you both RIP
Peak Sinead. And I also love her Nirvana cover All Apologies, John I Love You and Tiny Grief Song. But this is Trip Hop/Folk crossover with James Brown with her actual soulful identity on show.
The lyrics come from an Irish poem of unknown provenance dating back to the 1600s. It's about death, telling the story of a person who will not leave the gravesite of their dead lover. O'Connor connected the song to her mother, who died in 1985. Another track on the album, "Feel So Different," is also about her mom. The track is built on a drum loop sampled from James Brown's 1969 track "Funky Drummer," played by Clyde Stubblefield. That sample shows up in hundreds of hip-hop tracks, but hearing it in a Sinéad O'Connor song is unexpected.
Fascinating! 😃 From the same album, I really like Sinéad's song Feel So Different. 💭 Another version of this song I just heard was admittedly more breathtaking (quite literally) by Eithne Ni Uallacháin. Both thoughful ladies, sadly in their graves, too early-but the music lives on forever. 💭🌠🎶
SEAMUS FEIN: Summer 87 I found Sinead when I needed her most, then and there and forevermore. Her voice is part of my song now. I don't sing a line without her near. Hold the door for me I'm soon to follow, and sure I'm with my own.
L L ann we thought that we were the only ones who had her first to albums you left 6 years ago and I always play her all the time and I know that you are still here one of life great people miss you ❤❤❤❤❤❤😅😂😂
So very sad that she suffered so much before she passed. What a brilliant song. Who else would think to blend a dirge with samples of James Brown’s “Funky Drummer??
I die I cry everyday. I love this woman I miss this woman everyday. I am stretched on her grave. I don't know how she could deal with the death of her son. If I lost my daughter my heart would quit it would fall out of me I don't know what I would do. Sinead O'Connor my little sister I wish I could reach my hand up and catch you I wish I could make you better I hope that you are with your son goodbye sister
Adeus.
I am stretched on your grave And will lie there forever If your hands were in mine I'd be sure we'd not sever My apple tree, my brightness It's time we were together For I smell of the earth And am worn by the weather When my family thinks That I'm safe in my bed From night until morning I am stretched at your head Calling out to the air With tears hot and wild My grief for the girl That I loved as a child Do you remember The night we were lost In the shade of the blackthorn And the chill of the frost? Thanks be to Jesus We did what was right And your maiden head still Is your pillar of light The priests and the friars Approach me in dread Because I still love you My love, and you're dead I still would be your shelter Through rain and through storm And with you in your cold grave I cannot sleep warm So I'm stretched on your grave And will lie there forever If you hands were in mine I'd be sure we'd not sever My apple tree, my brightness It's time we were together For I smell of the earth And am worn by the weather
"Funky Drummer" by James Brown. "Johnny Panic..." also samples "Funky Drummer", in fact it's been sampled at least 1781 times, so that best is very recognizable!
Rest in power Sinead 💜💚 Scorn those who thought you were a blackheart, for they were afraid of what you stood for, the end of the generational trauma of the Irish people 🍀and the black evil side of the church we were taught to love. Forgive them father for they now not what they do.

She had an otherworldly talent. Rest in peace dear Sinead ❤

Thanks be to Jesus she has one last chance. Before you judge that, listen to this song, again. She was an incredible artist. RIP
She definitely came to us as a messenger from beyond RIP Sinéad. You live on in our hearts and souls.

My most listened to album. Not afraid to say I've listened to it hundreds of times in full. Just cannot get enough of it.
Deep music to fill deep voids. These songs soothe my mind in the darkest of nights.

FACTS on FACTS on FACTS ❤
Wait wut? Those types were trashing on her after she died? I don't watch most mass media so wouldn't know.
Only blacks that were bought and paid for by the white man would diss her
And she had an amazing voice

The beautiful voice sending atmosphere throughout the world.
Heartbreaking loss to this world.
She could easily have done a whole album along these lines, an Irish poetry/hip hop crossover....mesmerising...
Heaven should be so blessed to have you. You are so loved. You will be so truly missed. Thank you for everything.
She was ahead of her time (sie war ihrer Zeit voraus). A pioneer. God bless her❤
I remember vividly dancing around to this fab number, when i was 18 and living in Holland. It gave me strength! Love you doty pet. X
My favorite Irish artist hands down. Slainte Sinead O’Conner
Hope you get to see your precious boy again, brave, fierce soul

This is a traditional irish poem. Prince wrote "Nothing compares 2 U" for her but not this one (as far as I know)
Wrong song but the sentiment still applies. Sorry for your loss, and our shared loss of Sinead as well. Peace.
I’m so sorry for your loss. Big hugs.

What a loss!
The coda just penetrates your soul
I am stretched on your grave
And will lie there forever
If your hands were in mine
I'd be sure we'd not sever
My apple tree, my brightness
It's time we were together
For I smell of the earth
And am worn by the weather
When my family thinks
That I'm safe in my bed
From night until morning
I am stretched at your head
Calling out to the air
With tears hot and wild
My grief for the girl
That I loved as a child
Do you remember
The night we were lost
In the shade of the blackthorn
And the chill of the frost?
Thanks be to Jesus
We did what was right
And your maiden head still
Is your pillar of light
The priests and the friars
Approach me in dread
Because I still love you
My love, and you're dead
I still would be your shelter
Through rain and through storm
And with you in your cold grave
I cannot sleep warm
So I'm stretched on your grave
And will lie there forever
If you hands were in mine
I'd be sure we'd not sever
My apple tree, my brightness
It's time we were together
For I smell of the earth
And am worn by the weather
