Talisker 10 is one of my favourite whiskies. When people say they changed the recipe, did they really, or are the changes in taste due to a change of production techniques, cask quality, and barley used. After all, the old branding was from 2012 to 2021 so comparisons could be between whisky produced at very different times. Keep up the great content!
if you are such a fan, try and get a bottle from the late 1980s / early 1990s to compare. You might be quite shocked as to how much it has changed over the decades.
great review, really appreciate the comparison. Talisker 10 is one of my favorites and have drained a fair few bottles over the years. It is one of those malts that has had a fair bit of batch variation over the years.
I've always found it to be pretty consistent, personally. But yeah, I'm surprised that they'd tinker with the formula considering the older version was so popular. I'm just glad the quality didn't suffer. Cheers Mark! 🥃
What an interesting video. I used to to drink the old Talisker 10 which came in a beige cardboard box back in the late 1980s and early 1990s. That was dirty, peppery, mineral coastal rocks and peaty. I have been complaining ever since that each time Diageo brings out another version of Talisker 10, it is more dumbed down, more rounded and sweeter. Ironically, the more sea spray and rock they displayed on the packaging, the more it tasted of butterflies and summer meadows. Last year I was in Skye and opened a 20cl Talisker 10 to drink at the end of the day. Honestly, I thought I had COVID. I couldn't taste anything. It was just so bland! Thank G-d I had some Torabhaig to hand which showed me that there was nothing wrong with my nose and taste. I have not tried Talisker 10 since and had no wish to until watching your video. Really? Diageo have tried to inject some of the old Talisker 10 character? Thanks. I might just give the new one a try. PS. I managed to pick up an old bottle of Talisker 57 Degrees North in some store in Tel Aviv last week. This is close to real Talisker as I remember it. I was so upset when I heard that they had discontinued this.
Well I should say... I enjoyed the first bottle of the new design. I've since changed my mind. I've had two other bottles since this review and they were a definite downgrade. I no longer recommend it. I've toyed with taking this video down. Cheers!
@Gwhisky If you ever see Talisker 57 Degrees North, get it. I guarantee you'll love it. *On the Nose* Sweet coastal sea engine oil steam train smoke after a rain storm. Smelly beeswax honey. Some coal soot from the engine. A lot, and I mean a lot, of sweet wood spices. Sooty, sea salty with a slight savoury peat. Furniture polish, freshly ground Black Pepper and sea-salt crystals, wet old leather, mixed spices, apple and honey cake with a touch of red chilli pepper. *Tasting* Swirling it around in the mouth, it has a full-bodied and oily sea water mouth feel. Salty crackers, Black pepper kettle crisps, salty cheese and caramel snacks, cooked apples with black treacle, burnt brittle toffee, beeswax honey with a touch of herring oil. It doesn't say it, but it's non-chill filtered as well. How do I know? Try adding water and leaving it for 15 minutes. The whisky has turned as opaque as dirty washing up water.
I went to the Talisker Distillery last year and the tour guide said they no longer burn peat for drying the barley. They smoke the peat now so that they can return the used peat back into the peat bog as a more sustainable practice. I wonder if that explains the dirty smoke profile as - I'm guessing here - the incomplete combustion may result in dirty smoke. Like it does on a BBQ if you put the smoke wook on before the coals have got going.
Talisker 10 is one of those I always replenish, unfortunately I won't be able to compare it, as I finished the old bottle. But I do remember that when I uncorked the new one I felt a deeper peat impact (neck pour maybe?). I would say it's a nice consistent whisky at an affordable price, so thumbs up for Diageo this time (it doesn't happen often, hahaa). Great review! Thank you very much.. Cheers. 🥃
Cheers Fer Nando! Yeah it does seem a bit more peat-forward. I'm sure there's been no change to the distillate or ppm. I think that added peatiness is the result of some changes with the casks. I'm glad you still enjoy it too! 🥃
In talking about possible changes to the new bottling, there were no dramatic changes at the distillery in 2011 as far as I know (and consequently no changes to the make up of the distillate), so there are only two other factors that can be changed. One is cask selection and the age of the casks; the other is, as you said, the possible addition of some older casks to the vatting. Maturation, as always, happens at Black Grange on the mainland where Diageo has its massive warehouse complex for all of its 28 distilleries. So no differences in the climate or place of maturation either. If the new bottling is a tad more "in your face" it may just be a slight change in the proportion of first-fill casks to refill American barrels. That would account for some slightly stronger tannins and a little more heat on the finish. And yes, you're right when you suggest that these entry-level bottlings remain really good value for money as they hardly ever are subject to unexpected price hikes (the 30 to 40 pounds, dollars, euros price bracket is highly competitive among the supermarket whiskies, thank God). Let's hope that value for money ratio will stay constant far into the future! Cheers.
Thanks for the info! Yes I'm sure it's just a matter of the casks selected. Perhaps a smaller proportion of older casks, perhaps a different ratio of first fill to refill. Unfortunately production info from Diageo remains very limited (as always), so we're left to speculate. I'm just happy it's still delicious and sold at a great price. Cheers Russell, appreciate the input! 🥃
This is my Talisker journey in the last couple of years: Talisker 10 old label - absolutely loved it, Talisker Storm - it was ok, Talisker DE - loved it, and now I’m almost halfway through a bottle of Talisker 10 new label. I want to love it so much, but it’s just not working for me. It’s like one of those whiskies you mention sometimes: it’s not even bad enough to remember it. I still have an unopened bottle of the old one, perhaps I’ll open it soon and find out if it’s the whiskey that changed, or if it’s just me. :) Cheers, man!
Wow I'm sorry to hear you're not into it. I've really enjoyed both Talisker, and I think they're pretty much equals in a direct side-by-side. There are differences, but I don't feel like the new one is THAT much weaker than the old one. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts when you finally crack the older bottle for a chance to compare. Cheers!
I had the Craigallechie 13 the night before my wedding with my boys. I was far too new to the whisky scene to appreciate it but I'm anxious now to revisit.
I only realized, that they maybe have changed the recipe after stocking up on bottles. I also came to a similar conclusion as you did. I wasn't quite sure if my old opened bottle had been mellowed by oxidation but it seems conclusive after watching your video ( and a german.comparison video of Pat Hock). Hats off to your conclusion! I also feel the newer release is more engaging and i like the intensity! So thanks....great review!
Glad you agree. A few people have chimed in to say the same thing. Rare that a re-release is better than the previous version, so this is definitely a win for us! 🥃
Thanks for the review ! The review I saw noted that the colour is really orange now - maybe to match the new etiquette?! Looking at the 2 you have, it seems that is true. I worry about the amount of colouring used in the new one.
To be honest if there is a difference in colour its a small one. It's not as dramatic as I'd heard. In fact it's almost indistinguishable from the old one. If it's darker, it's only slightly. I think the orange fringe on the label might make it appear more orange than it actually is...
Hi, nice review. I didn't do a side by side but it seems the newer one is more to my liking. But could some of these differences be due to oxidisation? Your old bottle is emptier. Maybe that accounts for less peat for example?
It's an older bottle, yes. But I'm quite certain the change is a result of using a different formula of casks, possibly younger casks. Besides, Talisker 10 doesn't usually go "flat" like a Laphroaig might, for example. I'm convinced it's not that.
Quite intersting, I'll have try the new one. I really like it when you use the term "just different", it's often hard to decide better or worse. Many people say that older whisky are better than younger but not for me...just different...I've tried quite a few young whisky and they can be quite beautifull....and old ones that are not so good.
Thank you, I just bought the new version. Never tasted the old one, that's my first tried. I'm a fan of Laphroaig Quarter Cask to be honest. I was buying this one to have a much smoother experience that the Laphroaig give so, I look forward to try it.
I should update: I've had a couple bottles since that initial one. Sadly, I don't think it's as good as the old release. The first bottle had some great flavours, but the new ones are more flat. I hope that's not the case for you!
Very very good and Thank you for doing this comparison as I was curious about it. I like the thought process. It's not bad it's just different and personal preference comes into play.
It would be fun if you could review some Balblair. I've tried a few and I like them a lot. To bad that they skipped the vintage botteling and began to have agestatement instead....but that works to. My favorite so far is -99 vintage, first edition, bottled in 2018, quite fantasic in my taste. But the new 15yo is really nice.
I've had that '99. Beautiful stuff. I'm a fan of Balblair! I've been looking around for the 15. It's available here, but I'm trying to find it at the best price. Don't worry, it's high on the wishlist. I'm sure to get around to it! 🥃
Just the other day i blind tasted the (old) 10, 18 and 57 North. I put 18, in front of 57 then 10 on both the nose and palate but it was very, very close and looking at the value, the 10 is the best. I have to try the new 10 as well 😀
As rarely as I quaff Talisker and having bought Storm the last time around, I can't keep up with such lightening fast changes. ;) I just finished off the bottle of Storm and its place in my selection was taken by a brand new bottle of Port Charlotte 10, which has never been tasted in these parts.
Great review as always 🤗 I tend to like comparison videos. I haven't tried the new T10 yet, since I have 3/4 left of the older one. But as it drains, I'm going to get the newer one to compare. But I'm also going to save 200ml of the older version in a 200ml bottle for the future. I did compare the older Skye to the older T10. To me Skye is a cheaper version of T10. I didn'treally like Storm that much. To me the tasting notes were a bit "hollow'". Not balanced.
I should probably update: I've since bought a second bottle of the new 10 and it's not quite as good. Seems there are some batch issues, maybe? Still excellent, but this bottle I'd place below the older version.
Geoff, you are so good. Although I have only passing interest in Talisker at the moment your reviews are engaging so I watched and your aside about Bunnahabiann was perfect!! I bought an old bottle a year ago and today you confirmed it is different than the current release. Can you please elaborate as I have yet to open my older one and would love to know what to look for. I'm to visit a friend about 8 hours travel from me and he just bought 6 bottles of the current release.... LOVE. I'm taking a bottle each of the 3 peated Bunnahabiann and my older release and have a mini Bunnahabiann festival. Thanks for the aside and any information on the difference.... Cecil
Thanks a lot Cecil, very kind words. 🙏 My takeaway from the Bunna 12 old vs new side-by-side was that the newer one was more sherry-forward, while the older one had some more earthy elements. Still somewhat similar, but different, and the quality didn't waver as far as I'm concerned. Let me know how your tasting goes, sounds like it'll be a good one! 🥃
@@Gwhisky The tasting won't be till sometime in March but I have Moine, toiteach and toiteach aDah and the older 12yr expression should be a good time. I'll let you know.
Prefer the old one. Bought new and not a huge fan of- but drinking some now, it tastes overwhelmingly ginger to me. Dominant flavour to me, mixed with black pepper. It doesn’t have the complexity I recall from the old. 😞
Hello Geoff~ Thanks for sharing~ So far I haven't tried to taste the new Talisker 10, your comment is really helpful. In general, we think old ones are always better than new ones, but in this case, it doesn't work. By the way, I have old Talisker 10 (mini 5cl map label ), maybe we can do blind tasting from the one to the new one. That will be a tough challenge. Who will get the best Talisker 10? Do me a favor, give me your opinion lol
Hah well like I said in the video, the quality is pretty much the same, so it depends on your preferences. I like the new one only slightly more. But you might feel differently, so it's worth trying the side-by-side with your mini! 🥃
I no longer buy Talisker, but it was a favorite. I think it's ridiculous that Diageo tinkers with the flavor of this malt but continues color it in the name of what? Tradition? Personally I prefer the older label, but that's pretty trivial. P.S. I used to buy a 5 yo Island Single Malt (Talisker @ 43) from Dun Bheagan for $29 which was a dead ringer for an older version of Johnnie Walker Blue Label ✌️
Hah yeah it's a classic Diageo move, doubt they'll ever take the colour out of this stuff. I'm still a sucker for Talisker, though. 🥃 I've seen Dun Bheagan, had no idea it could rival JW Blue!
@@Gwhisky I haven't seen it in years, and yes, very odd, especially being a very young single malt; but I bought several bottles, and that's what it tasted like. I even did a side by side with 43% Blue Label. Makes me think that older versions of Blue had a substantial proportion of Talisker in it.
Enjoyed the review and comparison between the old and new! Haven't had Talisker 10 in a few years now, but I'm genuinely curious to try this new release. Keep up the great work! Currently have a bottle of Ledaig 10 open and would love to do a side by side comparison of these 2 great island single malts.
Very different whiskies. I prefer the Ledaig myself, but they're both fantastic and some of the best entry level peated whisky you can get. Cheers Peter! 🥃
Sounds great! I often not that like young whisky, though the old version 10yo for me is a little bit too round. If the new one is more rough and dirty, that will fit the talisker 10 profile better as my taste, so guest I will like it more. Will try! Thanks for review Geoff!
It's only a touch rougher than the older stuff. It's still much rounder than your average Islay, so I'm not sure of it'll be rugged enough for you, but it's worth a try! 🥃
Interesting to hear the small changes Geoff. I haven't been able to connect with Talisker at all despite In the last year having the 10, 57° North, Storm and Port Ruighe I've generally been disappointed by All the them, maybe just a profile that doesn't suit me.. Cheers
Fair enough! Yes I have a friend who's much more experienced than me who also doesn't connect with the Talisker distillate. Matter of taste! Cheers Ramiz! 🥃
For my own part I don't fancy the torn label look. It already looks dated. The last Talisker 10 I tasted was at a Zoom tasting in early 2022 and if I recall correctly it was a bottle sporting the previous lable design. In the peated category it took top honours among the 14 whiskies tasted, beating out Port Askaig cask strength and Compass Box's Peat Monster. Judging by the comments section the new make may not be up to snuff. I might wander down to the store where the Talisker 10 was bought and see if they have any of the old bottles left. It was well priced at the time, something like C$80 or so. In my whisky stash I happen to have a Talisker 10 that I bought in duty free a decade ago (for which I paid US$32) and another bought back in 1988 just prior to my first big backpacking trip. It sports the best Talisker label, the one with the map of Skye on it.
They evidently use rye bourbon barrels finished in sherry cask…using the same method as Isley. It’s about as secret as KFC spices. Makes for a interesting west coast. The spice is unique but it’s in rye.
The Talisker isn't cheap where I am at about $110 here in Canada, lucky for me I have a 1 litre bottle unopened from duty free which I picked up about 3 years ago at well under $100 , Nice review, New subscriber to the channel, Cheers.
Not surprised. Fellow Canadian here. No way I could afford to keep this channel going if I still lived there. Highway robbery! Thanks for watching and subscribing, Robert. Welcome! 🥃
NIce analysis! I bough the new Talisker 10 a few months ago and I am hugely disappointed! :/ I loved the older bottling, it was, for me at least, truly magical. Smoky but not too smokey, a nice sweetness, briny - sea salty, sea weedy, the chili catch and beautifully balanced. The new bottling is, for me at least, none of that. It is smokier but that's it. There is no realy complexity to it imho. The nice sweetness is gone, there is a dry smoke in there, the chili catch is mostly gone as well and converted into a general spiciness. It is not as sea salty as it was. A different whiskey. A whiskey that is imho trying to be an Islay because Islay whiskies are very popular nowadays but fails miserably. It became a worse version of Laphroaig 10. It is not what it was, it is not unique anymore.
That's fair. I seem to be in the minority is the sense that I like the new one. It's got a bacon note that I absolutely love. I agree the old one was sweeter and generally rounder. Cheers! 🥃
@@Gwhisky actually I’ve tried it out with water since then and imho this version of Talisker is improved by it. The smokiness is taken back a bit, the sweetness is a bit stronger and the oceany sea salt appears in the back with the chilly catch upfront. Still not as good as my bottling from ~2012 but js closer to it. So it seems the same spirit is still buried beneath the heavier smoke. Would love to try out the DE edition to compare the quality of that one as well.
Just opened last night the 'new' Talisker 10 (having finished a bottle of the old version recently), I must say that your assessment is spot on! I must admit though that so far I prefer the old one better- the balanced, mature characteristic made the old version as close to perfect a whiskey could be. the newer is still excellent though, but perhaps a bit less refined overall than the old one. cheers!
@@Gwhisky Yes, 'more rounded' is the word I was looking for, thanks. can definitely appreciate the ruggedness of the new one. we'll see how this bottle 'opens up' in the next couple of weeks.. might come back to report :) take care.
Great video. Love comparisons and very good to do a new vs old on a classic release like this one. I have not had the new one yet, but now doubt I will some time. Cheers!
I just picked up my first bottle of the newer version. I prefer the old recipe over the new, if I want a bolder peat, then I'd buy ardbeg or laphroaig. I enjoyed Talisker 10 because it was softer / rounded, and i would over look the chill filtration, E150 addition. I won't be buying another bottle.
I'm not exactly a connoisseur, but I bought a bottle of this yesterday and not a fan. There's a lot of good flavors, but that vanilla taste you describe tastes like artificial cupcake frosting to me and it completely ruins it. It's the toothpaste and orange juice effect to me. I usually drink with one ice cube in my scotch, but this definitely works better neat.
This is likely just batch variation more than any recipe changes. Try another with a different laser etched dare and you'll pick up more differences. I don't buy Ardbeg 10 because I find the batch variation too different and not to my tastes.
I think it's more than batch variation. I found the older version to have very little batch variation over the years, then suddenly a notable shift in flavours with the new bottle. I should be clear though, the “recipe change” I described is almost certainly not a change to the distillation or the distillate itself. Instead I think it's a different approach to the cask play. But I'll be the first to admit that this is all speculation on my part. It's not like Diageo ever tells us anything! 🥃
I also prefer the new one. It is similar to the old one, but a little more daring, a little brighter and a little bit more peppery. A little closer to the ideal Talisker, in my opinion.
You have to admire the clarity of the distillery character. I'm sure I'll enjoy the new recipe. However, I do love low-to-medium peated whiskies, just because the market is skewed towards heavily peated ones (which I also happen to love). Instead of upping the peat, I'd rather they ditched chill-filtration and also the fake tan. And even with the new recipe they should do that. But they won't.
To be fair, the peat level should be the same. I doubt there's been any change at the distillation level. I think a different collection of casks are being used that display a bit more youth, bringing a bit more of the peatiness forward. That being said, it's still very much a gently peated whisky. Much lighter than the heavily-peated Islay stuff. But yeah, the fake tan and chill filtration we could definitely do without. Cheers Craig! 🥃
Yes, they're totally different. The new Talisker is nothing like the old. It really pissed me off. My friend bought a bottle of it. It has a carmel taste. Diego lies. It's not the same. I knew something was wrong when the label changed. It shouldn't even be called Talisker anymore!! It would be like buying a Toyota that was made by Yugo. It's so different. It would be like going into your job and the pay changed, your co worker's changed, you boss & lunch time changed. It's that different.
I actually like the newer one better. I noticed the label changed and the taste was a bit different but still, like the salty pepperish notes and caramel notes.
I don't know why but I simply don't enjoy this whisky... something turns me off and I can't quite wrap my head around what it is. Another one everyone loves but I'm not too fond of is the GlenGarioch 12. I'm holding off on finishing those bottles to see if my opinion changes in a few months.
I've had a more recent bottle of the Talisker 10 and I was far less impressed than I was with this bottle. Generally speaking I'm a big Talisker 10 fan, but I admit it doesn't always hit. I'm with you on the Glen Garioch 12. It's decent stuff, but I don't really get the hype myself. Cheers Bruno. 🥃
@@Gwhisky My Talisker 10 is still the old bottle. It served its purposed, which was getting me used to peat. Now I simply love my Laphroaig 10 and waiting on a Lagavulin 16 I ordered (It's not like I need 2 kidneys). lol. Cheers!!
Hi Geoff, Diageo doing Diageoing 🤣👍. Haven’t tried the new version but I rather like the earlier version though. Good , enjoyable review, slàinte mhath Geoff.
Well I hope I didn't give the impression that the new one is wildly different. There are some notable differences, but the character is still very much there. If you liked the old one I'm sure you'll still enjoy the new one. Perhaps slightly more, perhaps slightly less, but it's still good. Cheers and thanks for always watching and commenting. Much appreciated David! 🙏
Wow, in my country (El Salvador, Central America) is $107 per bottle in 750ml, it's more expensive than other 15 years old ones, I see around the world it's almost half price. They are making a lot of profit out of this one.
Am I the only one that still smells damn green apple too.. Also it's defenitly an ok balanced whisky, especially at the price that I got it here. (45euro).👍 It's a good scotch to drink a "daily" dram off. Its good quality and ok its colored but coloring may never influence flavour! I wish it was ot chill filtered. I prefer Ardbeg uigeadail and corryvreckan and Laphroaig 10 cask strength only (Europe you know regular 10 only 40% abv...) I like most islays more. But lagavulin 16 is chill filtered and colored and still a very good dram too.. And yes this isn't an Islay but it tastes like one imo.. It's a good dram. So cheers.🥃
I'll have to check for the green apple note next time I have it. It's definitely a competitive whisky against a lot of good Islay offerings, although like you I tend to gravitate towards cask strength stuff. Cheers! 🥃
Nice review, thanx bro. Here in Brasil most whisky drinkers are huge fans of Talisker, and this review is very usefull for us, because we still have more of the old version of Talisker here in our market, and I was personaly curious about this new version. Now I can chill about it knowing thar Diageo did not destroy this beautiful whisky. Thanx again. Cheers from south Brasil.
Talisker 10 used to be a favourite of mine and then it became difficult to source. Non age statements appeared instead. 🤷🏻♂️ Eventually I came across the 10 year old again and it was absolutely disgusting! 🤮 A few years have passed and I seen a heavily discounted bottle in my local supermarket which I am currently drinking.... I am really enjoying it again! ☺️
Great review! Haven’t had the new one yet, but if i have a complaint on the old one, it would be that it is too rounded and soft for me. Looking forward to trying the new one!
I still find Talisker to be one of the best balances of peat, salt, and sweetness. I don’t sense much material difference between the old and new. I recently ran across a Welsh distillery, Penderyn, that makes some great whiskey using a Faraday still. A review would be nice.
Very interesting comparison. Partly because I have an unopened bottle of the old label on my shelf from (I believe...) 2012 ish :-) Do you think the differences that you're seeing are definitely from a tweaked recipe? Or could it be from variations in the casks that are available? Interested in your thoughts.
Most certainly a change in the cask play. I highly doubt there have been any changes to the distillate itself. I probably should have used a better word than recipe...
The new Talisker 10 is more enjoyable. My diary shows that I had given 87 points to the old one. The new one gets 89. And yes I prefer the look of the new bottle. A change for the better - and that's rare!
Your "old label" was a 2008-ish rebranding; olden days, when Scotch was meant for fishers and toothless pirates, Tali was potent and mono-chromatic . . . now, i settle for the cheaper STORM ! 1004CAD), aye, full of caramel (that orange glow) - or my 125 $CAD Tali 21 yo 59%abv saved since 2004 . . . - as always, very erudite.
Talisker 21 for CAD $125... absurd! Sounds like that vault of yours could be traded in for a mortgage at this point! If memory serves, I prefer the 10 to the Storm, although I haven't had the Storm in ages. Cheers Timothy! 🥃
That's the good and bad with whisky. Not only are there countless distilleries and offerings, even the ones you already tried end up changing. I'm going broke.
I've just tasted the old version and I've found the notes you've mentioned. Now I have to buy a bottle of this new one. 🙂 The old one is definitely tasty!
I should update you... I've had a more recent bottling of the newer one and I didn't like it nearly as much. There could be some batch issues. Cheers. 🥃
I don’t know why people so vehemently despise scotch bottles having a modern design. I personally am all for it and I love seeing what the designers are bringing out. The old labels are so boring and conservative.
Does anyone else think the new one is sweeter and more tamed. The smoke of the older one is just not there in the new one. Dare I say that can we even call the new one peated. The older was a classic with a smoky blast this new one doesn't even taste like that anymore. What a shame. Looks like i will have to keep having Ardbeg
I would like you to review Craigellachie 17 now that the 13 was your favorite scotch of last year. I would also love you to review my favorite scotch, Craigellachie 23, but i wouldn't want your wife to find out how much you paid for it and would feel responsible for the quarrel...
I'll review the 17 either in late Feb or March. Don't worry, it's coming! As for the 23, a bit pricey for my taste, whether gf finds out about it or not! 😉 Definitely want to try it, though. It's on the wishlist for when I'm a rich and famous TH-camr! 😂🥃
absolutely hate the new , definitely won't be buying another talisker 10 sadly and hope to see the distillers edition as. a supplement. . much , much cheaper in taste than the regular
Always beware of new packaging. It very often signals a change in the product and not for the better. I have seen this happen with many products over the years. As soon as they start talking to accountants and marketing, you might as well kiss it goodbye. That is true for this product. We could wax eloquent about all of the "fruity notes" and nuances in whatever new "Expression" it happens to be. The 'Kiss of the Sea' is not there for me anymore. I do not say it lightly. After thirty years of looking forward to my glass of Talisker in the evening, they just lost me.

It's definitely a change. A side-by-side really makes it clear. My bottle of the older 10 wasn't that old. Thanks for watching Simon!

*On the Nose*
Sweet coastal sea engine oil steam train smoke after a rain storm.
*Tasting*
Swirling it around in the mouth, it has a full-bodied and oily sea water mouth feel.
I'm relieved! I was really worried that the new 10 would be awful. Thanks for the review!
A lot of people will tell you it is. I don't think so, but at the end of the day you'll have to decide for yourself. Thanks for watching!
Cheers, man!
Cheers!
You are not wrong at all.
Nowhere near as good.
After thirty plus years, they
just lost me. Such a shame.
Love comparisons. Thanks for this great review
My pleasure. Thanks for watching! 🥃
I had the Craigallechie 13 the night before my wedding with my boys. I was far too new to the whisky scene to appreciate it but I'm anxious now to revisit.
It's a stunner! Hopefully you enjoy it more the second time around! 🥃
Fair & balanced as always. Thanks for the highly relevant review, as have seen the new version taking over shelves more and more.
Thanks Chris! 🥃
I'm seeing the same as well. The older versions are getting bought out and the newer ones are coming in. At least that is what I see at Total Wine.
This is very relaxing! Thank you!
My pleasure!
I dont agree.
Blue label of 1990.
Whiskys of samaroli....
Thank you, I just bought the new version. Never tasted the old one, that's my first tried. I'm a fan of Laphroaig Quarter Cask to be honest. I was buying this one to have a much smoother experience that the Laphroaig give so, I look forward to try it.
It's definitely calmer than the Laphroaig QC, with a more subtle character. Hope you like it!
@@Gwhisky that's my same conclusion!!
Great video 👍🏻
Thanks! 🥃
Managed to grab the last bottle of Talisker 10 in my domestic duty free shop. Hopefully I will enjoy this. Cheers G
I should update: I've had a couple bottles since that initial one. Sadly, I don't think it's as good as the old release. The first bottle had some great flavours, but the new ones are more flat. I hope that's not the case for you!
@@Gwhisky thanks for the update G. It still felt as a worthy buy. Fingers crossed for me 🥹
Very very good and Thank you for doing this comparison as I was curious about it. I like the thought process. It's not bad it's just different and personal preference comes into play.
Thanks for watching Dean! 🥃
Totally agree with all you've said except I feel it has a long finish maybe ..very rugged and a welcome burn on a cold day
It would be fun if you could review some Balblair.
this is a regular in my stash, love both of the versions cheers Geoff)
Me too! Cheers! 🥃
Just the other day i blind tasted the (old) 10, 18 and 57 North. I put 18, in front of 57 then 10 on both the nose and palate but it was very, very close and looking at the value, the 10 is the best. I have to try the new 10 as well 😀
I'm a huge fan of the 18, followed by the 10, then the 57. But certainly the 10 wins on value. Cheers Martin! 🥃
As rarely as I quaff Talisker and having bought Storm the last time around, I can't keep up with such lightening fast changes. ;) I just finished off the bottle of Storm and its place in my selection was taken by a brand new bottle of Port Charlotte 10, which has never been tasted in these parts.
Great review as always 🤗
I tend to like comparison videos.
@@Gwhisky
Thanks for your input. I will keep that in mind. 🤗
I hope it's temporary batch issue, because I don't want to loose a whisky that I like.
My takeaway from the Bunna 12 old vs new side-by-side was that the newer one was more sherry-forward, while the older one had some more earthy elements.
This is outdated. I've had two newer bottles since then and they aren't as good as the old one. 🥃
Hello Geoff~
Thanks for sharing~ So far I haven't tried to taste the new Talisker 10, your comment is really helpful.
I just got the 2021 loch gorm the other day, good choice?
It's good! Enjoy!
I've seen Dun Bheagan, had no idea it could rival JW Blue!
@@MrChristopherMolloy Like you I don't think I've seen it in a long time, but I'll keep my eyes out for it!
@@Gwhisky I said it was a 5 year old, but I believe it was actually an 8-year-old come to think of it.
Nice review. I wasn’t aware of this. Only had the newer one.
Haven't tried old talisker 10, but I like this new one. Spicy sea water with smoke 😅
Nice review. This new 10 sounds more like Talisker Storm. More punchy and less refined.
Haven't had the Storm in ages. Could be!
Exactly my thoughts. And Storm doesn't hold a candle to the older 10 which has impeccable balance and complexity.
Smells like medicine, lemon and jam...what a combo! What sort of stuff are you normally sniffing.
Another good one Geoff! Have yet to try the new one, maybe soon. Cheers!
Still good! Cheers Lloyd! 🥃
Ah! Wonderful! Glad to hear they've stopped coloring and chill-f . .
~ Oh ~
spoke too soon there, ha ha.
Lol oops.
They evidently use rye bourbon barrels finished in sherry cask…using the same method as Isley. It’s about as secret as KFC spices. Makes for a interesting west coast. The spice is unique but it’s in rye.
Very interesting. Had no idea! 🥃
Talisker old version and new, chill filtered…tick!

@@Gwhisky Particularly Ontario a.k.a Onterrible - worst scotch selection on planet earth (and perhaps elsewhere) and generally highest prices.
I must admit though that so far I prefer the old one better- the balanced, mature characteristic made the old version as close to perfect a whiskey could be. the newer is still excellent though, but perhaps a bit less refined overall than the old one. cheers!
Yeah a lot of people do prefer the older one. I'll admit it's a bit more rounded, but I like the ruggedness of the newer one. Cheers Kushi!
Cheers!
Glad you enjoyed the vid! Hope to see you review the new one at some point! 🥃
thank you for this video !
Thanks for watching! 🥃
Fair enough.
Interesting comparison 👍
Thanks Fraser! 🥃
I couldnt even tell the difference. I think all the changes are very very mild. I liked that 😀
Maybe the newer one borrows from Talisker Storm profile ?
That could make for an interesting side-by-side! 🥃
@@Gwhisky DO IT! 😁
Jeff, what is the best 18 year whisky for you?
I'll be reviewing ALL of my 18 year old whiskies over the summer and giving a ranking video at the end. 🥃
Fair enough. A lot of people don't seem to get along with the new one. 🥃
Well said! 🥃
I love you man. I’ll try the new one.
Cheers man. Enjoy! 🥃
The new version tastes a little more like Laphroaig and i'm all about that... so good job Talisker.

@@Gwhisky Most Welcome ... Big Fan From India ❤🥃
Yeah I think we're in the minority here, but I agree. Still excellent stuff! 🥃

Ouch! That's just absurd. Not worth that much for sure! 🥃
talisker 10 went from $100 to $150 cdn almost overnight in Ontario
Not worth that at all! 🥃
Cheers! 🥃
is $73 really "cheap" though?
Markets are extremely different when it comes to pricing. I can only speak from my own experience. It's cheap where I live.

So glad to hear it!
Great review! Haven’t had the new one yet, but if i have a complaint on the old one, it would be that it is too rounded and soft for me. Looking forward to trying the new one!

Yikes. I tried the older version recently for the first time and enjoyed it.
Love the old version. Love the new version, too! 🥃
I still find Talisker to be one of the best balances of peat, salt, and sweetness. I don’t sense much material difference between the old and new.
I recently ran across a Welsh distillery, Penderyn, that makes some great whiskey using a Faraday still. A review would be nice.
I haven't had a Penderyn in a long time. Something to consider! 🥃
Very interesting comparison. Partly because I have an unopened bottle of the old label on my shelf from (I believe...) 2012 ish :-)
Do you think the differences that you're seeing are definitely from a tweaked recipe? Or could it be from variations in the casks that are available? Interested in your thoughts.
Most certainly a change in the cask play. I highly doubt there have been any changes to the distillate itself. I probably should have used a better word than recipe...
I picked up a bottle of 10yr. I think something went wrong in the bottle -ing. Tasted terrible
I need to update this video. The newer Talikser 10 is NOT as good as the old one. I've had two bottles since this one and neither was very good. 🥃
Price has gone up. Ledaig is cheaper.
Sorry to hear that. I guess I'm lucky it's stayed the same in my market.
I can’t get past the added color at the moment. It bothers me even more than the chill filtration.
Understandable. It's definitely annoying and unnecessary. 🥃
The new Talisker 10 is more enjoyable. My diary shows that I had given 87 points to the old one. The new one gets 89. And yes I prefer the look of the new bottle. A change for the better - and that's rare!
You and I are certainly in the minority. Most people much prefer the older version. For me they're quite close. 🥃
@@Gwhisky Thanks for the reply. We like it and that's it 😊
Your "old label" was a 2008-ish rebranding; olden days, when Scotch was meant for fishers and toothless pirates, Tali was potent and mono-chromatic . . . now, i settle for the cheaper STORM !
@@Gwhisky ((my foresight got me lucky to stash away a few diamonds pre-2008 . . . wait until u get to Indie bottlings ... hehe, Two CHeers !))
That's the good and bad with whisky. Not only are there countless distilleries and offerings, even the ones you already tried end up changing. I'm going broke.
Hah true!
I've just tasted the old version and I've found the notes you've mentioned.
Now I have to buy a bottle of this new one. 🙂
The old one is definitely tasty!
I should update you... I've had a more recent bottling of the newer one and I didn't like it nearly as much. There could be some batch issues. Cheers. 🥃
@@Gwhisky
Thank you!
I'm glad I've found the older one first then. 🙂
Diageo gotta Diageo 😃
Old Talisker was good..new Talisker isnt good!😪
Fair enough!
This is outdated. I've had two other recent bottlings of the new 10 and they're not as good as the old one. 🥃
@@Gwhiskynew one tastes overwhelmingly like ginger and feels quite one-dimensional to me. Miss the old Talisker. 😢
Haircut ❤️
Sounds like the older version is the better one to me .
a lot of pressure from the popularity of ardbeg
The older one is much better, a lot More BALANCED!!!!!!
If it ain’t broke… don’t fix it!!!
pop PoP !
absolutely hate the new , definitely won't be buying another talisker 10 sadly and hope to see the distillers edition as. a supplement. . much , much cheaper in taste than the regular
Always beware of new packaging.
It very often signals a change in
the product and not for the better.
I have seen this happen with many
products over the years. As soon
as they start talking to accountants
and marketing, you might as well
kiss it goodbye.
That is true for this product.
We could wax eloquent about all
of the "fruity notes" and nuances
in whatever new "Expression" it
happens to be. The 'Kiss of the
Sea' is not there for me anymore.
I do not say it lightly. After thirty
years of looking forward to my
glass of Talisker in the evening,
they just lost me.
Sorry to hear that. There was a pretty obvious change in the recipe, and if you preferred the older one then it's definitely bad news.

Συμφωνώ! Στην Αυστραλία το 18αρι κοστίζει 350 αυστραλέζικο δολάρια, πάνω από 200 ευρώ….😢
The new version sucks. More E150 (orange), more alcoholic note, sweet and salty wtf is that. Less intensity
Disagree.
@@Gwhisky what part?
I can agree it may be slightly younger, but I think it suits the rugged profile. In a side by side I found more intensity in the newer version. Just my perspective. 🥃
