    #8 is, "Forget your band has a bass player and play tons of bottom octave stuff with the left hand."

      I blame the classical background of most piano players and feeling the need to play all roles (bass, chord, melody), haha.

    Where's "playing everyone else's parts mid-gig without any prior discussion"?

  • @weehuge
    @weehuge ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Had pianists play keyboard and I would add:
    - playing the melody line with the singer,
    -playing the bass line with the bassist,
    - playing everything all the time rather than staying in one register and dipping in and out,
    - not understanding the register that the instrument they are playing in sits in and that some instruments can't in real life/don't sound good as full chords and should be played as single notes

  • @TomMilleyMusic
    @TomMilleyMusic 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Wanna know the worst I've seen? Guy pretty much did all of that, but also would try to play keys on one hand, and bass on the other, using hammer ons. Neat concept...but he could not pull it off in the slightest. He'd also try to correct songs theory wise...even though they're songs that are already finished and well known. And the theory he was parroting wasn't even correct, or just overlooked other concepts that made what he was saying pointless. To be fair, every now and then he'd just play a simple part that worked, and I guess that's why we gave him a chance, hoping he'd just learn the parts....but then he pulled out the bass and keys crap AT A SHOW without saying anything...like excuse me? Why are you ruining our entire set? And when on earth did we discuss you doing this? Also, how did you somehow sneak a bass on stage without us knowing? I wasn't even mad at that part, I was impressed lol.

    • @TheRoneZone
      @TheRoneZone  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Haha, wow man, sounds like a handful. Just goes to show though that, 98% of the time, the most impressive and musical thing a musician can do is shut up and just play the part.

    • @TomMilleyMusic
      @TomMilleyMusic 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheRoneZone Dude, that's so true. Often all you need are simple, yet musical parts, and that's it. In the past I wanted to be playing more, but then realized it wasn't needed, and heck even if I'm only playing a simple part...I'm still playing music as a job...the hell am I complaining about?

    The opposite of the transpose problem happens sometimes in our band. We only have guitar, keyboard (me), percussion, and vocals. Every now and then the guitar player will forget to put on his capo. Just the other week, we were playing a song that I don't come in until the first chorus. I hit my first chord, and it sounded awful, then the second chord sounded terrible too. I look at my fingers, and everything looks right, then I look over and notice the guitar player forgot his capo.

  • @VasilyMusic
    @VasilyMusic 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Guilty of EVERYTHING. Except #2 and #7.
    Especially guilty of #1. Man, choosing the right sample takes x100 more time than actually playing. Dang it, why is there still no thorough guide to that on the Internet?! They teach you how to play the keys but nobody teaches you how to choose the best sample on the spot!

    • @TheRoneZone
      @TheRoneZone  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      People underestimate the amount of work that goes into proper keyboard playing especially when doing Top 40 covers. When I was playing on cruise ships, I would spend about 3-5 hours a night extra during the rehearsal just to get the sounds right, while the rest of the band enjoyed a night off smh lol. Ahhhh good times, it teaches you a lot about sound design and what not, but man, it was a struggle, especially in the beginning.

    • @VasilyMusic
      @VasilyMusic 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheRoneZone Wow. Maybe I should try to apply for a cruise ship music band too. What do they require for such position?

    • @TheRoneZone
      @TheRoneZone  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@VasilyMusic The most important requirement would be the ability to play several different styles of music. For you as a keys player, it's important that you are familiar with how keyboards work and how to choose the right samples. Playing two keyboards at once to cover several parts is also important. The audition process will likely have some sight-reading.
