After seeing your recent reviews of Golf 8R and GTI Clubsport, thought I would look back at some Mk7.5 videos as still not convinced with Mk8 package overall. . .the TCR looks epic and that Portimao circuit looks awesome - wonder which you would go for, if it was a choice between the GTI CS8 and the TCR which it supersedes?

That looked like a lot of fun! I had an R for just over a year, i found the ghost gear changes annoying too, it'd catch me out and change up just before i hit the paddle sometimes, making me go from 2nd to 3rd, then 4th straight away. About my only complaint really though!
was kinda fun watching you get faceache in that passenger seat. hope you managed to relax those grin muscles before pouring the beer in, cos it wouldn't go well otherwise lol.
That change down in manual is a pain. My 2020 Cupra does it too when all I want is to let the engine do the work. Thinking about one of these next though

The irony is that the TCR, which was slightly criticised in its time as being slightly lukewarm, might become the best production performance Golf ever. Front wheel drive, pushing 300PS and with all the quality and analogue switches of the Mark 7….
How does it compare to the good old BMW M140i Joe? Hope you get to do a test drive on the new 1 series when it comes out also. Just want to add the cut in the vid are spot on.
I wonder if Joe was pressing the pedal down past the "over-travel" click. That causes auto-downshifts without a DSG tune. Honestly one of my least favorite features on the stock DSG in the GTI.
@@tredfxman I am not talking about upshifts from 2nd-3rd or 3rd-4th actually. My GTI on the stock DSG tune would shift to the most accessible lower gear (RPMs not above fuel cut for the lowest selectable gear). So you are in Manual mode in 4th doing say 48-52mph at 3.2-3.5k RPM. I floor it past the over-travel and it drops to 2nd gear and 6200rpm. But now that I rewatch, it does seem like he is referencing early upshifts. Both are a huge problem in my book, but completely agree on the upshifts being overly conservative.
Love the colour, cool that VW have made the otherwise mundane GTI and bit more special, although wish they had gone crazy on the styling, wide body stylee! Living the dream as always Joe 😁
It's a great car, they just won't honour the warranty after it's gone on track, which feels like a massive wasted opportunity. Personally I'd go for the Civic type r for best in class performance and the i30 N for sheer fun - and track them often.
That DSG thing is going on for ages. I had to re Programm my old MK6 GTI DSG by APR to disable it. The DSG could be so much better, don’t know why they aren’t doing it. Great video as usual.
Looks like another fun car we won't be getting in Canada. But, I have to ask, would you replace your M2C with it? Or would it go alongside in your garage?
Nick Forsyth thanks, yes I heard that, however I was more questioning that, as other sites seemed to imply it was using the same electric diff that’s fitted on the GTI Performance pack. Great to hear it’s mechanical.
If it helps - having spoken to VW reps I got a big no as far as track warranty was concerned. I was asking about a Golf R. Amazingly, BMW and Porsche are the same in that regard.

It's frustrating because they both release brilliant cars, and in BMW's case even picture them on track on their websites (M3 and M2 Comp on BMW UK site), but then don't support buyers in exploiting their cars to the full. For full disclosure, I got the info on BMW in an email from BMW UK directly. Info on Porsche and VW was from staff in their respective showrooms. As you rightly say, Hyundai allows it... it's one of the reasons I bought the i30 N in fact!

At that price were talking on par with the last of the M140i, so how do they compare would you say. Ok I know the BMW has more power and its rear drive but I looked at the VW and ended with the BMW as I wanted rear drive.
Mate Awsome video looks like a great car too, i can see you was pushing on!! For me that track is the best i have riden we done a 3 day track day their on our race bikes 3years ago, what doesnt come across in the video is the elevation changes and the amount of speed you carry, just seeing this video has reminded me i need to get back their very soon. Perhaps one day when you're trying to buy a new VW California that they won't release to the dealer to register....4 weeks after the WLTP was compliant on it....and customer care say to you "That's just how it is.....you'll just have to suck it up" you might change your mind.

Yeah the Clubsport S had 306bhp so that was the most powerful GTI ever.

Back here again & im still not convinced ok the mk8. Even 8.5 im less convinced & think mk7/7.5 are still a better daily sport hatch.

The way to stop ghost changes is shove the gear leaver over to the left, it holds the gear unless you run out of ratio then

@joe The DSG needs a TCU (DSG) remap to remove kickdown in manual mode - you may well have driven DSG cars with this remap done already.
