Yeah I agree a lot with Jason on this one, I agree that there was a lack of songs and that hurt it quite a bit and there was some stuff I didn't really like on here even if overall it does have a cool sound. I'd say "I Don't" and "Patience" were the songs that I liked the best. 3 stars for me too.
The songs on this album just don't have a typical song structure. This album is more experimental and I love it for that. I like the uniqueness because it allows the music to be surprising and go against your expectations.
Remember when we had the top 25 singers ratings and then we stopped? Remember that we are not rating vocals per se, but really it's about the music we love. Otherwise my list would be totally different and I wouldn't waste time on just great vocals that accompany music I am not into. So the countdown continues. 12 Van Morrison Genres: Celtic soul, blues, folk, jazz, soul. Van the Man uses many unique and inventive singing styles. He can sing in tenor and less often uses baritone and falsetto but is usually in fine form. He throws in a lot of "sha la la las" and does scat and animal noises, the later two of which I am usually not a fan of, but Van carries it off well enough or not too obnoxiously . Somewhere in the 80s and 90s, Van went more middle of the road (boo) and now his sets might include a lot of jazz numbers and quarrels with the pissed-off audience who want him to do oldies. Rarely does Van humor the audience. Van wrote and sang stunning ethereal gems as Astral Weeks, Besides Me, Caravan, Listen to the Lion, Sweet Thing, Days Like This, And It Stoned Me, Jackie Wilson Said, Into the Mystic, Wild Night, Tupelo Honey, and Someone Like You. He also said he loved even the worst song by the Replacements, "Johnny got a boner". He is vastly influential and did the definitive "Baby Please Don't Go". His vocals can add soul and depth to even light tunes like (na na na na na na) "Natalia". No one else could do what he did with "Natalia". This song was out around 1978.
@@TastesLikeMusic I know. We stood hopeless as he was in his downward spiral. "I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness, starving hysterical naked."
It's a 3 and a 1/2 star album for me. I liked her previous solo album a little more because it wasn't as over produced and didn't bury her voice as much. Here, I feel this album is too over produced and her voice is used more to create an atmosphere. This album is a lot more atmospheric and uses more beats as a starting point. I'm a big fan of her singing and prefer when her songs are more stripped down and direct. You can see why she's doing solo stuff and what she was looking to do outside of Alabama Shakes... but when I think of the song "Sound & Color", it has the elements that they play with in her solo work but on that particular song, the production does enough to pull out all of the elements that highlight the song writing and talent without overtaking it.
This was the Qobuz album of the week, as was the last dinner, beginning to think you guys are in cahoots! Not an R&B fan, thought it was ok, lost interest half way through. With Jason on it.

J’s vocals don’t make sense when paired with acoustic instrumentation, and there are no tracks that rank among his best. I thought it was a pretty pointless album. 2.5 stars for me.
@@echosmyron1278 J's vocal are often wonderful paired with acoustic instruments in an antagonistic but pleasurable way. Though I haven't listened to this record yet, I am talking about other songs he has done acoustically.
