Here in Exeter Devon UK most of the buses have manually operated ramps.

It's just the spec the operator buys the bus with.

Nice. I don't live in the UK, but am originally from London. The 161 runs just around the corner from my grandparents. I did film a 161 on a 16-plate MMC whilst over there last November.

Why are they at the rear door as opposed to front

It's been that way ever since low-floor buses came in to London in the late 1990's. TfL has always preferred this configuration. Becuase of where the wheelchair space is located on TfL buses (which is right opposite the rear door), it makes sense for the ramp to be at the rear. It means that wheel chairs can go straight on and straight off without having to navigate sharp & tight turns. Some New Zealand buses experimented with this in the past. Designline Buses built in the 1990's used rear-door ramps, as did the early Volvo B7RLE's that Kiwi built from 2002-2005. Eventually it became the norm in NZ to have the ramp at the front door, mainly becuase New Zealand wheelchair ramps are manually operated, usually by the driver (I say usually becuase sometimes passengers do it - I've done for people in the past). In London, however, Driver's can't leave their cab during service, thus electric ramps are used (as is the case with many UK bus operators). Outside of London, the ramp is located at the front, as most UK buses outside of London are single-door only. However, in recent years more out of London operators are starting to introduce 2-door double deckers, although these usually still use front-door ramps, probabaly becuase this is the norm in those areas (and probably becuase many of them are using manual ramps as well, not electric).

@@the_alex_ellis_channel6923 one problem is when these buses get moved on to another part off the group and middle door gets done away with
The front door wheelchair ramp is usually an after thought like the scanais wish they would fit front ramps to if anything a back up ramp if the middle one fails

In london since lots of people board and exit at the same time, they have the middle door where you only exit the bus. You are not allowed to exit threw the front door you can only exit threw the middle doors. and you are also not allowed to enter threw the middle door since there is no reader and fare bunkers operate alot in london. thats my they got rid of bendy buses in 2012 and the ability to enter threw any door on the new routemaster. the ramp is fitted in the middle door so the wheelchair user goes straight into the wheelchair apace which is just opposite the ramp. they should have a wheelchair manual ramp at the front of the bus since sometimes the electric one doesnt work.
