After a homeowner purchased their new home, they set out to remove the previous owner’s handicap grab bars. As a result, their fully-tiled bathroom was left with some holes that needed patching. When they called the team at Ask This Old House for help, carpenter Nathan Gilbert gladly headed out to help them patch up their problem.
    Where to find it?
To remove the tile, Nathan first scores around the grout using a utility knife [homedepot.sjv....]. Then, he uses a grout brush [homedepot.sjv....] to clean out any dust. He also uses a carbide tipped grout removal tool [homedepot.sjv....] to help create a clean open line in the grout. He then begins carefully chipping out the tile with a hammer [homedepot.sjv....] and chisel [homedepot.sjv....].
Once the gypsum board is vacuumed [homedepot.sjv....] and wiped off, the tile is ready to be installed. To adhere the new tile, Nathan opts to use a tile repair mortar [homedepot.sjv....], applying it to the back of the tile using a 1/8 the notched trowel [homedepot.sjv....]. Once the tile is laid in, Nathan checks that the depth of the tile matches the others with a level [homedepot.sjv....]. To grout the tiles, Nathan uses an unsanded grout that comes in a caulking tube [homedepot.sjv....] for easy application.

Lesson: always get extra tiles with installations, and store somewhere incase of damage or such. And don't use tile as leverage with a sharp chisel! LOL...

Everything I did at our house I kept an extra box of tile and they all went up on a platform in the Attic out of the way. Same for the hardwood only I kept it in condition space

Why was the pencil eraser used in cleaning up the grout? Is it a manufacturer's recommendation?

For some reason when they drill those holes they always try to drill it middle of the grout, as if to damage as little of the tiles as possible but then the end result is tiles on both sides of the grout are damaged and need replacing…. Please if you are installing a grab bar or what not, just try to damage fewer tiles instead

I had the same problem in my shower. Bunch of cracked tiles from the 50’s. I looked on eBay but the prices were outrageous. So I started to replace them with tumbled travertine tiles. It has a very Romanesque look to it. In the future I could replace all the tiles at my own pace.

Why not attach the tile to the wall with construction adhesive?

A heat gun would have softened that mastic and the board would have not ripped

Joe Ferrante (RIP) was the original TOH tile guru and was fun to watch.

I wouldn't go so far as to stop watching the show but I agree that he has absolutely no screen presence. It's like watching an unfunny version of Hank Hill. And he hasn't really improved over the years so I hope the producers aren't planning on him being the replacement for Tommy.

He has replacement tiles and needs a pro to come put them in. Time to turn in your man card.
