      Yes and yes! I’m in my school’s nursing program now, but when I was doing my prerequisites I’d always go my college algebra professor’s office hours and just sit and do homework for that class. Most of the time she had a big group of calculus students in there asking for help on the homework, so I’d sit on the floor in the back and she’d check in on me here and there to make sure I didn’t have any questions. At the end of the semester I was a boarder line between and A or a B. She bumped one of my last homework assignments up to give me that A because she knew I put the effort in all semester.

    Actually, the best advice for new college students is to not overthink it. Don't stress out about getting it all right or watch a bunch of TH-cam videos trying to be totally over prepared. You're gonna be fine. Just go to college. Otherwise you'll stress yourself out over whether or not you're spending your college experience correctly, have a breakdown, and have to drop out.

    • @Steph-ty6lg
      @Steph-ty6lg 2 ปีที่แล้ว +61

      True. And id like to add if for whatever reasons be it financial , emotional or something else , if you cant go to college you should defo ask for a distance/online option where youre applying and work part time. It's risky but worst case scenario you wouldve saved some buck.
      And try to find a balance never put work over college or vice versa. It's all about the work ethic and networking skills.

    Y’all, meeting new people in college and exchanging phone numbers is so big to college success!
    I always got someone’s phone number from each of my classes, so that if i missed class i could ask them for notes, and Vice verse.
    Its also great for studying to have a study buddy or study group. With a group, you can divide big assignments (unless the teacher prohibits it) and each do a portion of the assignment, then share answers-Because in college, what matters most isn’t whether you got the assignment done, but whether you studied the information on that assignment. So the sooner you get it done, the sooner you can start studying.
    And best of all, you’ll have people to eat lunch with and possibly stay up late studying with (if you Want that), because life in college can definitely get repetitive and depressing-it helps to have people around you who are in it with you.

      What did you study?

  • @bigbo1764
    @bigbo1764 ปีที่แล้ว +251

    As an actual college student, I’ll give it to you straight:
    1. Don’t skip classes, it becomes a habit very fast. It’s not necessarily about being there to learn the material, it’s about being in a work mindset during your day.
    2. Don’t sign up for morning classes unless you have to. Mainly for the past reason - it’s easier to skip classes; however you don’t learn as well if you are attending a class right after waking up.
    3. Read you textbook; the textbook is far more detailed than the lectures and tests are almost always made with textbook material in mind, it’s vital to understanding the course.
    4. Do homework and reading when you can, not when you ‘want’ to; I’m not saying you can’t have off time, but don’t procrastinate(this is coming from a procrastinator).
    5. Study in public; studying in public creates a sense of pressure to do work, rather than by yourself, where you can let you mind wander or you can be distracted by your phone or else.
    6. Be social; it’s really easy to get too deep into work and lazing around, however, this kills your mental health and slowly degrades your work ethic. Even if you are an extreme introvert, do something to get out and talk to other people.
    7. Have a degree plan; your counselors are great, but they have a lot of students to worry about, so make sure you have a rough idea of what classes you need to take and when so you can get you major(s)/minor(s) in your desired time frame.
    8. Lastly, keep up with your family(if you have a good relationship with them), as it’s refreshing to talk with from home every once and a while. If you have any issues, let them know, so that you can sort them out fast before it snowballs into a bigger problem.
    I know this advice seems overly-organized or stereotypical, but it’s stereotypical for a reason. I struggled because I didn’t take most of these seriously my freshman year and suffered because of it. College isn’t a trial by fire unless you make it one, so good luck and make wise choices.

      Number two is just straight out impossible for me. I have morning classes most days. When in chemical engineering, you are expected to get up early to prepare for the real world.

    • @bigbo1764
      @bigbo1764 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@SophiaMiller-oz8ti morning classes are fine, I know a lot of people who have very strict constitutions throughout college and are very punctual with their schedules, which makes morning classes great for them. Personally, I find a lot of college students have a late night here and there for homework, partying, or another reason, which makes it hard to wake up for class on time the next day and snowballs as mentioned; however, as mentioned, if you keep yourself in line and don’t procrastinate, you’ll rarely find yourself in a position to be forced to stay up too late into the night.

    This is my personal opinion and advice of one of my professors. As a freshman in college, especially if you're new to the city, you need to find some stability. You will meet people along the way, it doesn't necessarily mean that you'll have long term relations with those people, but you'll have friends who'll understand the struggle and MAYBE will become close friends later on in college. Clubs are okay, but know that your social interactions don't necessarily depend on them. My field of study requires a lot of daily work and pairing clubs with long study sessions, seminars and foreign language classes would be draining after a while. What I'm trying to say is, find and adapt to a work ethnic in your first year so you can actually have a choice in picking the club which is suited for you.
    All of what I've said is meant with a good intention & many may disagree with me and that's ok. All fields and school systems are different after all.

      As an HS graduate I can give you one piece of advice
      Never get too much into studies that it will kill your social, remember to make friends, hang out , try to take part in every activity, explore your school, talk with many ppl
      I myself have done all of that along with some things which I don't recommend bec they might not be the same for your school
      I can tell when you'll graduate HS you'll not regret even a bit , you can always look back and say to yourself I'm glad I made the most out of those precious time
      And studying in general in HS isn't all that difficult, if you're an above average in understanding things you'll be fine and score good grades with few hours of quality studying if not then you'll have to put more effort in it but that doesn't mean studying the whole time , you'll get enough time for the school life activities just make sure to never miss them ..

Many clubs just put on fun events every now and again and you can go to those with no commitment. After your first year of going to different events and seeing which clubs you like, then you might decide on one or two to try and become an officer in, which means that you would have responsibilities and potentially even leadership opportunities.

    Listen- my high school runs on college like schedules, so we had office hours. I cannot stress to you the importance of office hours. There were days I was waking up for 8-8:30 office hours and I didn’t have a class until 11. Seriously. They help.

    Joining clubs and all that is kind of a privilege. I had to work all throughout college. And what free time I had was spent driving up 2 hours to visit my mom and my gf. Don't regret it. But it's not always viable for people. I didn't have the college experience. I just scraped by a living while trying to do well in school.

    It’s really gonna depend on which college they went to.
    I will say join every club you are interested in, and then eliminate those you don’t enjoy as much. Keep the top few that you can manage with your schedule.

    One thing I tell freshmen is to prioritize having a good night sleep before an exam, especially on finals. Cramming through the night is so inefficient you often don't remember a thing at the test while being well rested you even remember things you glanced over or was just mentioned by the teacher.
    Of course you had to be at the classes beforehand.

    The American high education system forces students into immense pressure because failure leads to tens of thousands of dollars in extra tuition. In Europe i can just pick a few courses i like every semester, do way more semesters then i initially planned, because my tuition is 112€ per semester (really), i can have the best time of my life and still graduate with a degree

    I don't understand the whole "go to office hours even if you have no reason to". It's like do I show up, the prof is like "hey what can I help you with" and I just answer like "uhhh idk?". Genuinely need some advice as to how to navigate this.

    As a PhD student/TA, I second the going to office hours thing. There's always someone trying to email us a long question the night before the test, it's the worst. Especially since office hours for many classes are often empty and I really enjoy getting to teach.
