    9:16 Just silently appreciating plants. I can relate; that's how I got into this whole thing. My first glimpse was when we decided to get dad an aquarium for his retirement since he seemed very interested. long story short, I ended up more interested than him, then a fishkeeping friend caught wind and he just silently shipped me a shitton of plants, when they arrived I had that 9:16 moment, and at that moment I knew this was going to be my new obsession.

    So my local Walmart got so much harassment over the fish and ended up giving a bunch of them away for free and a little girl her mom and her aunt came into my workplace I knew the little girl head go fish well she mentioned the lunch got her an "algea eater" but she didn't know what kind so she asked me cuz she knew I knew a bit about the more common aquarium fish so she pulls up the picture and I have to give her the most horrified wide-eyed look and tell her to look up "common pleco". They told her that people keep these little algae eaters in little bowls all the time and they won't get to big in their little tank....
    My local Walmart was giving out common plecos for free and telling people they can keep them in a bowl...
    The little girl cried to her mom because she loves her fish and wanted to make sure it would be ok (she even cried when the aunt asked me if GloFish were dyed). Then the aunt said "well if it gets to big he'll have to find another home or get flushed" and the girl started crying again. Then the aunt said "when it gets too big well get rid of it and get you another little one and then when that one gets to big will get rid of it and get you another little one". This girl was crying no stop in the store and kept begging to get a bigger tank for her pleco (she has a 10 gallon now)

    Choose plants like: Hornwort
    , Java Moss, American Waterweed, Egeria, Limnophila and/or pearl weed. Add some Nerite Snail for the future algae. I would put in the first 2 weeks sponge filter just to wait for the soil gets good bacteria and to processes the organic compounds that the soil is released and the extra oxygen will help with good bacteria. Do 30% water changes every day, until the bloom decrease due to the soil. A hug from Brazil!

    So I know you mentioned waiting for the plants to root before trimming, how long do you think is a good amount? I have some plants that I put in my tank that absolutely took off and I'm not sure how long I should wait before I trim them back.

    • @FishForThought
      @FishForThought  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      if it's been taking off then I'd give it a week and then trim. If it's not breaking the surface, then you don't rly have to trim it yet so give it more time. I trimmed in about a week because it maxed out on the surface.

    Dear Chris:
    You did an amazing job of aquascaping this tank with some, fine substrate, driftwood, and plant species. I am concerned that the Endler's livebearer fry will be in danger of ammonia spikes at this stage, however. Also, what is the water temperature? Is it warm enough for an Endler?
    My, two, 10-gallon, potting soil tanks have algae issues. The shrimp tank has green, hair algae. The bedroom tank has some sort of short, but hair-like, brown algae. I removed the driftwood, fish, and heater from the bedroom tank, but left the hang-on-the-back filter. Aside from reducing the photo period, cutting back on nutrients (feeding), and introducing fast-growing plants; what are some ways to combat algae? I'd like to add some, amano shrimp (Caridina multidentata) to the shrimp tank. But, I'd like to deal with the source of the algae issue, first.
    Thank you for posting this, entertaining and informative, aquascaping project. I look forward to seeing how it turns out.
    All my best,
    Sincerely,
    E. J. Brinegar

    • @FishForThought
      @FishForThought  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey E.J. always nice to see a comment from my subscriber from the good ol' days. Endler has been doing okay, the frogbit rly takes out nitrates fast. for temperature, it is summer here so there's not much difference between the other tanks. I believe decreasing the photo hours will do the most to combat algae, there's also just mechanical removal. And perhaps feeding a bit less. Good luck, and thanks!

    My tanks get dosed twice a week and I haven't lost any plans so far.

      Yes It's not very necessary, but stratum and other substrates like it take some time to breakdown and will remain balled for a while. This causes more possibility for melting of the plants. With dirting, the plants are able to become established a bit faster.

    Way late to the party. I noticed that there was some bladderwort attached to some of the pearl weed. Hope you saw that as well and got rid of it.
    I wish I lived in a climate where I could have tanks without tops. Unfortunately, there's too much evaporation once I have to turn on the heat in late October. For me the heat has to be on for 6 months of the year.
    I got a great deal on an Aqueon 7.5 gallon shrimp tank kit. Your scaping on this tank has inspired me to a first attempt at aquascaping. I'll maybe send you a photo on insta once the tank is up and running. Thinking about doing a shrimp and male endler tank. I have a crap ton of black bar endlers. The line I have breeds very true, so even the "culls" look great.

  • @arnicamoana7861
    @arnicamoana7861 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I wonder what would happen if you stuck a N. Davidi shrimp or two in there? They’d probably get to work on those bacteria blooms, and if I recall correctly, are pretty low oxygen demand, since your plants are still babies and not pumping out that sweet sweet oxidation juice.
